Besides, no one knew how many Unbreakable Vows a person could make before reaching some unknown limit, or what the consequences might be. Magic always extracted its price eventually.
"Then you can improve it. That's your area of expertise," Tom said with a shrug.
Wade frowned.
"I'm not the Demiurge from Nazarick. Why does every research project end up being my responsibility? Tom, when are you finally going to start sharing my workload?"
"I have classes, I help manage the club for you, and I'm exhausted every day. How am I supposed to find time to research and improve new magic?" Tom protested.
It wasn't that Tom lacked the intelligence to do such research.
The problem was that anyone with someone like Wade around would naturally stop bothering with this sort of work. A hands-off leader like Wade only had to focus on research, while Tom, as the enforcer and right-hand man, had countless other things to worry about.
"I really do need to find myself a brilliant research assistant," Wade said seriously.
No matter how capable he was, he was still only one person. There were simply too many things demanding his attention.
"Then how about I lend you my ancestor?" Tom suggested with a grin.
Wade burst out laughing.
"Tom, you're the very picture of filial devotion."
"What did you just say?" Tom couldn't understand it, but he had a feeling Wade had just insulted him by a word he didn't know.
"I was praising you for being such a dutiful descendant, Tom."
Wade had Toby deliver a sum of money to Professor Slughorn.
Negotiating with the Ethiopian Ministry of Magic and constructing the breeding facility would both require funding.
Aside from the necessary expenses, however, everything would also take time, so Wade wasn't in any hurry to begin breeding Basilisks.
After all, raising Basilisks in Ethiopia was legal, while doing so in Britain was not.
There was no reason for Wade to take unnecessary risks, especially since many of his preparations were still incomplete.
With Tom staying at the safe house, Wade put away the Vanishing Cabinet and did not return to the laboratory over the next few days.
Just like that, 1 September quietly arrived.
That morning, when Wade came downstairs fully dressed, Toby had already packed all his luggage.
In fact, Toby had even purchased all the new textbooks and supplies for the coming school year.
Wade hadn't needed to leave the house once. Toby had handled everything.
For the first time, Tom found himself genuinely envious of Wade for having a house-elf.
Although the creatures were rather neurotic, giving Tom a poor first impression, they truly were invaluable servants to wizarding families. The way Toby moved through the house without being asked made ordinary life seem inefficient by comparison.
While they were eating breakfast, Tom suddenly asked, "Does your revolution include liberating house-elves? Wizards are enslaving them, after all."
Before Wade could respond, Toby had already marched over with an indignant expression and carried Tom's breakfast away. His ears were pinned flat against his skull, and he did not look back as he disappeared into the kitchen with the plate.
"There you go," Wade said with a grin. "Now you've got nothing to eat."
"Hmph. They're such irrational creatures!" Tom snapped, feeling both embarrassed and annoyed. He had only meant well.
"House-elves really are in a pitiful position," Wade said with a shrug. "But as you've just seen, the fact that they genuinely enjoy serving has already become an established reality. So for now, my revolution is focused solely on wizarding society. If an entire race has no desire to awaken on its own, why should I exhaust myself trying to force the issue? I'm not a house-elf. The most I can do is treat them as kindly as I can."
Platform Nine and Three-Quarters was as crowded as ever.
Unlike previous years, however, the moment Wade stepped onto the platform, he was surrounded by a group of pure-blood witches and wizards.
Every one of them did their utmost to display impeccable manners and refined conversation before him.
They all hoped to earn Wade's favour. That way, whenever he came up with something valuable in the future, he might choose to work with them first instead of that weathercock, the Malfoys.
Their smiles were careful, their questions light, but Tom could see the calculation behind every polite inquiry.
"Ahem! Make some room, please! Young Master Wade is in a hurry to get to school. He doesn't have time to chat with all of you. If you have business to discuss, you should speak to me."
Old Mr Malfoy, leaning on an elegant walking stick, forcefully pushed aside the tightly packed crowd of pure-bloods.
The others all glared at him, but knowing that the Malfoys were now Wade's business partners, none of them dared voice their anger.
Seeing them swallow their resentment delighted Old Mr Malfoy.
The Malfoy family had long been looked down upon by the other pure-blood families because of the way they conducted themselves. When had they ever enjoyed a moment like this?
Smiling broadly, Old Mr Malfoy shook Wade's hand before giving Abraxas a meaningful glance.
Abraxas immediately hurried over and eagerly took Wade's suitcase from him.
Seeing this, Wade smiled.
"Mr Malfoy, I've recently developed a new broom that's exceptionally fast. Abraxas has already seen it. I was wondering whether you'd be interested in working together."
The moment Old Mr Malfoy heard those words, his pale face flushed bright red with excitement.
It's here! The returns are finally here! I never expected them to come so quickly!
The moment Tom heard Wade's exaggerated tone, he knew exactly what he was doing.
He remembered something Wade had once said.
If you wanted people to work wholeheartedly for you, you had to let them taste some of the benefits.
Besides, Wade could easily have discussed this by owl.
Instead, he had deliberately brought it up in front of all the other pure-blood families.
His intentions couldn't have been more obvious.
Once the Malfoys made a fortune from this new racing broom, there would be no need to persuade the other pure-blood families. Those who had still been hesitating would immediately decide to invest, while those who had already invested would pour in even more money.
Just as I thought...
What kind of Dark Lord ever has to earn his own money?
