Chapter 8 - Chapter 9: Sniper

Erwin didn't know if it was luck but he didn't care, the situation was critical at that moment, and he didn't have time to think too much.

He discovered that Trigger was holding the injured part of his right shoulder with a painful expression on his face, Erwin wanted to approach to help him bandage, but he stopped him.

"Don't worry about me!" said Trigger, and then pointed to the rifle on the ground: "Try this!"

Erwin hesitated for an instant and decided to continue fighting, he left his rifle aside and picked up Trigger's, still a Kar-98, however, the quality was superior and it had a scope with 2.5x magnification, it doesn't seem like much but it can be the difference between killing or dying.

Trigger did not rest, he crawled with difficulty to Erwin's side, stuck his head out and held the telescope with his left hand exchanging roles, now with Erwin as shooter.

"At 10 o'clock!" said Trigger: "Two machine gunners!"

It was a heavy machine gun, two British soldiers operated it and spat flames against the German army with a cadence of 500 rounds per minute.

They were obviously well trained, because under their operation, the rain of bullets was fired precisely at an angle that allowed them to eliminate the soldiers hiding behind the German tanks.

Erwin aimed the scope at the shooter, then slowed his breathing and pulled the trigger.

Bang!

The heavy Kar-98 resounded like a heavy hammer, about a second later, the bullet reached the target.

Unlike the last time, now Erwin clearly saw in the scope how the bullet pierced the machine gunner's helmet causing a cloud of blood.

The machine gunner raised his head, and his whole body was dragged backward by the impact, like a drunk staggering, and then collapsed lifeless on the ground.

The British gunner next to him obviously did not realize that his comrade died under the sniper's weapon, otherwise he would have chosen to hide instead of taking the place of his fallen companion.

Therefore, Erwin worked the bolt to load another bullet, and with another "bang", the assistant gunner fell to the ground.

This shot did not hit the vital point, and the assistant gunner screamed in pain on the ground, covering the wound with his left hand, blood flowing from between his fingers, and his right hand randomly grabbing something in the sand next to him.

"Good job!" Erwin heard Trigger's shout: "You killed them!"

Then Trigger discovered that Erwin had pulled his head back and was leaning against the sand, so he asked in confusion: "What's wrong? Frank!"

"I killed them!" said Erwin.

"Yes!" Trigger replied coldly: "And you should continue doing so, because while you hesitated, several comrades died because of your leniency."

As soon as Trigger finished speaking, a German tank exploded, it was not just that, it was the tank's ammunition that exploded.

Flames burst from the holes and cracks in the body like a fiery fountain, the crew inside probably turned to ashes before realizing what was happening.

Erwin knew that Trigger was right, because the battlefield was a place of "life or death", and kindness to the enemy was cruelty to oneself.

It can even be said that this was also related to one's own life or death, because only by winning one had more chances of surviving.

So Erwin stuck his head out again to find the next target and fired a bullet.

This time it was an anti-tank gunner, and the bullet hit him in the chest, Erwin saw a blood arrow more than a meter high spurting from the chest of this poor British soldier.

Although he had fallen to the ground and stopped moving, the blood kept spurting, this shot must have hit the heart.

The German tanks had broken through the British defensive line, and soon the British troops became chaotic, they faced a difficult choice: continue resisting or retreat.

Erwin thought that neither was a good choice, if they resisted, they could not withstand the impact of the tanks.

If they retreated, their speed was not as fast as the tanks.

So, unless the British army had reinforcements or the German army let them go, it would be difficult for these British soldiers to escape alive.

The British army chose the latter, they left behind a large number of wounded and dead, as well as a large number of weapons, such as heavy machine guns, anti-tank guns, mortars, etc., and fled in all directions... It was an irregular escape, and there was no mutual cover.

At once, the German tanks advanced at full speed behind the retreating enemy, what Erwin could not accept was that the tanks completely ignored the wounded British soldiers and the corpses on the ground.

Some of the British soldiers could not move due to their injuries and raised their hands while shouting with all their strength, hoping the tanks would stop, some even tried to crawl out of the tanks' path with tears in their eyes.

But the German tanks did not stop at all, as if they did not exist, the heavy tracks passed over the wounded soldiers and corpses mercilessly.

Blood and flesh flew everywhere, pieces of torn flesh hung on the tanks like mud forming a bloody paste in their path.

What was even more horrible is that some wounded soldiers were not completely crushed, with only the lower part destroyed, some were even still alive screaming with snot and blood everywhere stretching out their hands trying to cling to something.

Bang!

Erwin pulled the trigger, and a bullet freed the British soldier from his pain, but this horrible scene will remain in Erwin's mind forever.

The German troops continued the chase without stopping for an instant, with shrapnel and gunpowder everywhere, the ranks of British troops were shot down one after another, with the German troops advancing to join the battle.

Erwin did not follow, he put away his rifle and sat quietly on the sand dune, motionless, he no longer had the energy to take another look at the bloody battlefield.

Trigger did not force Erwin any further, he just showed his injured arm in front of him and said: "Now, you can help me bandage it!"
