Chapter 41 - Flaming anger

[Intimidating Caretaker Level 5]

[Intimidating caretaker level 10 upgrade.]

[Those in your care cannot oppose you; those not in your care cannot oppose you. Now you can form a psychological barrier to prevent harm to those under your care. Cannot prevent physical or magical attacks]

[You have learned a new skill, Righteous Rage]

[Righteous Rage level 1]

[Your anger knows no bounds, so your enemies will grow to regret the day they angered you. Any psychological or illusionary effect will no longer influence you against your will.]

[No matter the time or place, if someone influences you, your anger can break your mind free.]

[You may be a bundle of weakness and fury, yet be warned, this skill does not fully break you free of any side effects of any skill above this ability's level. May you proceed to success or fail spectacularly.]

[Righteous Rage level 5 upgrade]

[At level five, this skill will turn passive and subtly break your mind out of any illusion or mental attack without conscious use. Good luck surviving the mental attacks so you can reach this level. Although your death will hold no change in your soul's rage]

Anna was pissed nothing short of being livid. When they were traveling, something felt wrong, but before they knew what was happening, they were thrown into illusions. Anna saw the moment her family died. Flashes had come and gone before her family materialized in her vision, all alive and well. Then they spoke their voices a perfect replica, as if they were alive and in front of her once more. Unfortunately, they started to berate her, blaming her for their deaths, claiming she shouldn't have been born. Her brother even claimed it was his right to have lived instead of her.

All this pissed her off. How dare that creature use the faces and voices of those she loved and lost to twist them into falsehoods? Her parents were kind and loving; they would rant to friends about her successes. Cheer her on when she hits a milestone and spend time with her without making her feel like a burden. Even when she was being a version of herself that she wasn't proud of, they still showed her love and support. Her brother may have been a brat, but he never had a mean bone in his body. He may have annoyed the shit to her at times but he would never wish for anyone to die the way he had. It wasn't who he was when he was alive, even if he was just a child. He was her brother, the brat who cried happy tears for the caterpillar that molted into a butterfly.

Yet that creature dared to sully the memory of her loving family and use their visage to cause her to break. Unfortunately for the beast, it did the opposite of breaking her will. It pissed her off, in her hatred she felt a choking sensation accross her throat and she became even more frenzied. Feeling nothing but a vengeful wrath, her skill Intimidating Caretaker triggered. Leaving just a simple notification, a game-changer to their predicament. It had leveled to level five and could affect the monster attacking them. All it took was a moment; that moment was all they needed to fight back.

When Anna could fully move her body, the only thing she could think of was her hatred; It was despicable, disgusting, and cruel. It shouldn't be; it shouldn't exist, it had dared to ruin something precious to her. So she did her best to obliterate the body. The only thing that stopped her from going further was her need for food and her inability to lift the hammer again.

"You okay?" (Greyson)

"I suppose I am why?" (Anna)

"You seemed very violent in your anger." (Greyson)

Greyson scratched the back of his neck nervously, but Anna didn't notice or care.

"It..." (Anna)

Anna took a calming breath, failing utterly to control her voice.

"That THING had its illusion show me a false visage of my dead family. IT practically insulted the memories I had of my parents and brother while they were alive. My family was too kind for their own good, and that thing showed me my family. A twisted, vile version of the, and I cannot tolerate something like that existing. My family wasn't perfect, but they never once regretted my existence and would never blame me for what happened to them. I may blame myself, but they would never blame me." (Anna)

Anna felt her throat tighten as tears threatened to flow from her. She forced herself to look up through the branches of the tree.

"It defiled the image of who they were, and I couldn't tolerate that." (Anna)

Her mind was fraying at the edges frigil, the seams shredding apart to reveal a festering wound of the mind. She started to cry anguish, pain, fear, loathing, and rage, overwhelming her mind. That creature defiled the memories of her family. Their love for others was desecrated and tossed aside like trash to a garbage heap. It was wrong. It had made her see her family, their look, their voices, even how they talked, a perfect replica of their visage. She had nothing left of them but her memories of their time together, yet that creature had given her vile memories, making her see them hear them again, but it wasn't them, and she could do nothing about it. She hated it, yet all she could do was destroy the monster after it died. The damage was done. It had torn away all her progress, even for a moment, and it was like she was back in that hospital, back to where she was forced to face reality after waking from a coma. At this moment, it took all her remaining will not to storm back to the desecrated body of the monster to pulverise it further.

"All I have left are the memories yet that creature made me see them. Then it twisted what I know they were and showed me what they weren't. It's vile..." (Anna)

Anna's words took effort and energy it was like every word she has spoken was her running a marathon. It had left her drained tired of everything.
