Chapter 15 - The eyes that watch

The moment the holographic screen flickered to life, a sharp tension crackled through the air.

The arena's massive display bathed the room in a cold, artificial glow, and in bold, blood-red letters, the next match was announced.

[ Next Match: Akari Itsuno vs. Kaito Sumeragi. ]

The words hung there like a death sentence. Takeru's breath hitched.

"What the hell?" Akari blinked, stepping forward, her eyes narrowing. "Already?"

Rin adjusted her glasses, the lenses catching the glow of the screen.

Somewhere, In a chamber drenched in shadows, only the flickering glow of a massive holographic screen provided light.

The walls were lined with shadowy figures, their forms barely distinguishable against the void-like darkness. The screen displayed a video of the fight.

The Puppet Master vs. Four Heroes.

Ice-coated terrain. A firestorm raging in the air. A tempest of energy attacks colliding in violent explosions.

The screen focused on Tyuji, Akari, Gugada, and Takeru.

Their opponent? A grotesque figure wrapped in hundreds of strings, The Puppet Master, a villain who reduced warriors to mere marionettes under his control.

The fight had been merciless.

Tyuji's ice conjured walls to deflect unseen strings. Akari's fire flared to molten intensity, turning the battlefield into a sea of steam. Gugada's sheer brute force shattered the ground beneath them.

And then there was Takeru.

The camera zoomed in on him, revealing his inhuman movements. He wasn't just reacting, he was ahead. Dodging attacks before they came. Landing counterstrikes at impossible angles. Moving with an unnatural precision.

The video froze on his face.

A deep chuckle slithered through the lair.

From the highest seat in the room, a shadowed figure leaned forward, his very presence suffocating the chamber. His eyes glowing red like burning embers gleamed with amusement "Now this… is interesting."

Another voice, smooth and calculating, chuckled. "Forget the Puppet Master. He was bound to fall eventually. But this one?" A gloved hand gestured at the screen. "He's different."

A third voice spoke, devoid of emotion. "For now, let's focus on the girl." A pause. "Our Kaito is already set to face her."

The menacing figure in the highest seat didn't look away from the frozen image of Takeru. "Good. Then let's see how this plays out."

Back in the Arena Halls, Takeru clenched his jaw. Something wasn't right. "Akari, listen-"

"I got this," she cut in, flashing him a confident grin.

Before Takeru could say another word, a sharp chill flooded the hallway. The floor beneath them iced over.

Takeru's breath misted as he turned to see Tyuji approaching. The S-ranked hero, the Ice Warlord, strode toward them, his piercing eyes fixed on Akari.

"Fire Girl," he said evenly. "You're fighting Kaito."

Akari arched an eyebrow. "Yeah? You know him too?"

Tyuji nodded. "And you're in for a hell of a fight."

Takeru folded his arms. "What's his deal?"

Tyuji's eyes darkened. "Kaito Sumeragi isn't just strong. He's precise. Tactical. And he doesn't hold back. If he has to break you to prove a point, he will."

Akari smirked. "Good. I like a challenge."

Tyuji studied her for a long moment. "Don't underestimate him." His voice dropped. "This isn't a normal match. You're stepping into something bigger."

Akari's grin widened. "Then I'll just have to make my move first."

Tyuji sighed. "You really don't listen, do you?"

Takeru smirked. "Barely."

Rin adjusted her glasses. "That's why we need to be ready.."

Akari cracked her knuckles. "That's fine. Neither do I."

Tyuji shook his head with a faint smirk. "You're either fearless or reckless."

Akari grinned. "Both."

Takeru sighed. "Definitely both."

The coliseum was electric. The crowd's cheers were deafening, their anticipation thick enough to drown in.

Above the battlefield, the massive digital screen illuminated the arena, announcing the showdown in bold, burning letters:

[ AKARI ITSUNO vs. KAITO SUMERAGI ]

Akari stood at one end, fire licking at her heels. Her crimson hoodie flared from the heat radiating off her body, her hands flexing as embers danced around them.

Across from her, Kaito Sumeragi was the eye of a storm.

White hair. Icy blue gaze. A stillness that spoke volumes. While Akari exuded raw, explosive energy, Kaito was control. Cold. Calculated.

In the stands, Takeru, Rin, and Tyuji watched, their expressions grim.

Rin adjusted her glasses. "I don't like this."

Tyuji's gaze remained locked on Kaito. "You shouldn't."

Takeru leaned forward, fingers gripping the railing. "Akari's strong. She's not gonna lose."

Tyuji exhaled. "It's not about strength." His eyes narrowed. "It's about control."

DING!

The bell rang.

Akari moved first. A burst of flames exploded beneath her feet, launching her forward like a meteor. With a flick of her wrist, she unleashed a wave of fire, a roaring inferno aimed directly at Kaito.

But Kaito didn't move, his hand twitched. And the moment Akari's flames reached him the air shifted.

Her fire collapsed in on itself, shrinking into a pinpoint before disappearing entirely. No smoke. No heat. Just, gone.

Akari's eyes widened. "What the- ?"

Kaito finally moved one step and then he vanished. A blink. Then suddenly, he was in front of her.

Akari barely dodged, twisting away as his palm lashed out. But even as she avoided the strike, an unseen force slammed into her side like a hammer. She staggered back, gritting her teeth. "What the hell was that?"

Kaito remained silent. He lifted his hand, subtle distortions flickered around his fingers. ''Pressure Manipulation.''

From the stands, Takeru clenched his fists. "That bastard, he's crushing the air around him. That's how he snuffed out her flames."

Tyuji nodded. "He doesn't waste energy."

Akari grinned. "Okay. That's new."

Kaito's voice was calm. "Your flames are wasteful. You burn too much energy."

Akari smirked. "Maybe. But they're also unstoppable."

She clapped her hands together, her fire twisted into something new, Instead of a wild blaze, her flames compressed into a sharp, concentrated blade of pure heat.

Takeru's eyes widened. "She's adapting."

Akari exploded forward, slicing through the air with her fire blade.

Kaito's fingers twitched, he shifted the air pressure, creating an invisible shield but Akari's blade cut through it. A searing gash burned across his sleeve.

Akari grinned. "Guess you're not untouchable."

Kaito stared at his arm, then exhaled. "Not bad."

Then, his aura changed. A deep pulse of energy rippled through the arena. The air itself compressed, warping the battlefield.

Tyuji tensed. "Here it comes."

Takeru's gut twisted.

Kaito lifted his hand, and everything collapsed.

A deep, crushing pressure swallowed the battlefield. The air itself twisted, distorting like a shattered mirror. Akari's flames flickered erratically, fighting against the unseen force bearing down on them.

Takeru's breath hitched as he gripped the railing. "Shit..."

Akari gritted her teeth, pushing back against the overwhelming force pressing down on her. Every muscle in her body screamed as if she were holding up the weight of an entire mountain.

Kaito exhaled slowly, stepping forward. With each step, the pressure grew more intense. "You're strong, Itsuno. But power without control…" He flicked his wrist, and the space around Akari rippled. Her body lurched sideways as if gravity itself had betrayed her. She barely managed to plant her foot down, skidding across the battlefield. "…is meaningless."

She coughed, spitting blood. "Damn… you're really full of yourself."

Kaito remained unfazed. "And you're still reckless."

Akari smirked despite the pain. "That's what makes me dangerous."

Without hesitation, she exploded forward, this time not relying on wild flames. Instead, she compressed her fire into a razor-thin blade of white heat. Her speed blurred as she closed the gap, aiming for Kaito's abdomen.

Takeru's heart pounded. "Come on… hit him-"

Akari's blade stopped mid-air or rather, It bent.

The very space around Kaito twisted, redirecting her attack like bending light through a prism. Her own flames bent away from him, refusing to touch his body.

Kaito's voice was calm. "I control the battlefield. You fight in my domain."

Then he struck. A palm strike shot forward not at Akari, but at the air between them. The compressed pressure detonated like a cannon blast.

BOOM!!

Akari's body shot backward like a missile, smashing into the far wall of the arena. Debris exploded outward as she coughed, struggling to rise.

Takeru's knuckles turned white. "Bastard…"

Rin adjusted her glasses. "Takeru… you need to watch closely."

He turned to her sharply. "What?"

She didn't look at him. Her eyes remained locked on Kaito. "This isn't just a fight. He's demonstrating something."

Tyuji nodded grimly. "They're sending a message."

Akari pushed herself up, flames reigniting. Her breathing was ragged, but her spirit burned hotter than ever. "You're… gonna have to hit harder than that."

Kaito's red eyes studied her. Then, for the first time, he let out a small sigh. "You don't understand what's happening, do you?"

Akari narrowed her eyes. "What?"

Kaito lifted his gaze. "You think this is about winning? About proving strength? Evaluation's?"

His aura flared, this time, the entire arena trembled. The ground cracked beneath him as invisible shockwaves rippled outward. "You're wrong."

Akari braced herself, flames coiling around her fists.

Kaito didn't answer immediately. Instead, he lifted his hand.

Takeru tensed. "He's preparing something big.."

"Singularity Collapse." The moment Kaito uttered those words, the very fabric of the arena folded inward. A swirling void of compressed air and energy imploded around Akari, crushing everything into a single point of absolute force.

Akari barely had time to react. She summoned every ounce of power, forming a defensive dome of searing flames and debris around herself.

BOOOM!

Two forces clashed, a crushing singularity against an unrelenting inferno. The arena ruptured.

The shockwave sent spectators reeling. The reinforced walls cracked under the sheer magnitude of the collision.

Akari gritted her teeth, forcing her fire to burn hotter, hot enough to fight against the void trying to consume her.

But Kaito wasn't done. He flicked his wrist.

The singularity shifted, instead of collapsing inward, it expanded outward in a spiraling wave of force.

Akari's flames flickered. Her knees buckled and then she was sent flying. Her body crashed into the ground, sliding across the ruined battlefield.

Takeru slammed his fists against the railing. "Enough of this shit!"

He turned, only to find Seiji standing in the shadows of the stands. His stomach dropped. "You…"

Seiji's smirk was as sharp as ever. "Enjoying the show?"

Takeru's hands clenched. "This is your doing."

Seiji chuckled. "Not mine alone."

As if on cue, Kaito exhaled and looked directly at Takeru. "You understand now, don't you?"

Akari coughed, forcing herself up. "The hell are you talking about?"

Kaito's gaze didn't waver. "This is bigger than you. Bigger than this fight. We are simply… setting the stage."

Takeru's blood ran cold. "For what?"

Akari wiped blood from her lip and glared at Kaito. "Why the hell are you holding some type of grudge?! What's your endgame?"

Kaito's eyes remained unreadable. "You wouldn't understand."

Akari forced herself up. "Then I'll just have to beat the answer out of you."

Kaito sighed, raising his hand again. "So be it."

The war had only just begun.

Seiji sat down, holding a bag of popcorn in his hand's and a smirk on his face.
