Chapter 24 - Pop off Basil

"What happened?" I asked Penelope. She and I had stayed back, the rest of the group had circled around Mckensie, whom Basil had laid down on the fountain. He'd started to administer medical care to the girl with help from Miriam. "We found her…she had found some rope and…well you can guess" Penelope answered quietly. My eyes scanned over the group, Basil, Miriam, Opal, Bear, and Mckensie…where was Victoria? "Where did…Victoria go?" I asked quietly, Penelope paused before cursing loudly. The group looked back at her. "Has anybody seen Victoria!?" She asked loudly. Miriam and Basil shared a look, Opal paused, blinking slowly, Bear raised his hand before he spoke. "She said she heard a noise back when we were in the maze and went to investigate" He admitted, looking guilty. Everyone turned to look at him "And you let he!-" Penelope started to yell but Basil cut her off "Zip it!...Okay," He sighed. "We can deal with this…Addie, take the dagger, and you and Penelope can go find her. Bear, can you show them the way?" Basil asked sharply, insinuating there wasn't really an option to say no. Bear nodded nervously, Basil tossed me the dagger. "Well then…this is just fabulous" I said sarcastically, "Get back soon!" Opal said enthusiastically. Penelope crossed her arms, Bear was practically dripping with sweat as he led the way. I stared at the tile walls as I usually did, my fingers tracing over the dragon symbol on the hilt of the blade. I always did love those tile walls, the rolling fields with cows, the giant castle and large red dragon, and…spiders? Okay moving spiders…real spiders…more like little moving black dots actually? I looked over at Bear and Penelope…neither of them had noticed. I blinked a few times, reaching out…nothing was there…no spiders. Gods above, how tired am I? I mean the floor isn't that comfortable and I don't think I get a lot of sleep even in the sleeping bag…but it can't be that bad…right? "Are you okay?" Bear asked quietly. I flinched, turning my head back to look at them, Bear looked startled when my gaze met his. "What" I snapped "N-Nevermind" Bear quickly started to walk again. Coward. Penelope looked over at me "Just for the record, you look like you're about to kill everyone…maybe I should hold the knife" She suggested. "No," I said sharply before pausing "I'm giving it to Bear, if he tries anything…we can take him" I decided. People scowled at me "Fine" She grumbled. I tapped Bear on the shoulder, causing the small boy to scream for a moment before looking at me with wide green eyes. I handed him the knife and he took it with shaking hands, he looked like he might burst into tears at any moment. He walked briskly in front of me and Penelope, who seemed entertained. The walls turned from beautiful tile to cold stone bricks, the temperature dropping visibly. "What sound did Victoria say she heard?" I asked Bear quietly "A bell chiming I think?" Bear offered. I looked over at Penelope but she didn't understand. "That's the sound that plays when they drop in a supply box!" I said excitedly. Penelope smiled slightly, a real smile that reached all the way to her green and blue eyes. Bear let out a loud sigh of relief, he walked with a bit more pep in her step. "Victoria must be there waiting for us" He said excitedly, the boy seemed so excited, occasionally shaking his head to fluff up his sandy hair. Even Penelope looked interested, we all needed food…I just hope to Hades that thats whats in the box. Bear quickly turned a corner, he stopped in front of a three way crossway, biting his lip. "We came from that way" Penelope offered, pointing to the left passageway. Bear skipped down the hall, then he stopped in front of another path. "Victoria went down that way!" He told us excitedly, I couldn't see her, she must have turned down the corner. Bear. Penelope, and I set off down the path. There were two more paths, I looked to the left and there it was, the box! Penelope and I rushed over, she started to dig through the box. I looked over at Bear, the smile had vanished from his face, he seemed shellshocked? I glanced at what he was looking at…I found Victoria…and Elizabeth…but Gods I wished I hadn't.
