Chapter 176 - Chapter 174 – Doom of the Spiders!

In the wizarding world, there are many terrifying beasts and magical creatures roaming about, but among the most bizarre and deadly is the Basilisk, also known as the King of Serpents. Basilisks can prey on most living creatures. They can grow to enormous sizes and typically live for hundreds of years. A Basilisk is hatched from a chicken egg incubated by a toad. The way it kills is astonishing—not only does it possess deadly venomous fangs, but its gaze can also instantly kill anyone who looks directly into its eyes. Spiders instinctively flee from Basilisks, for the serpent is their natural mortal enemy. Conversely, the crow of a rooster is fatal to a Basilisk—upon hearing it, the creature will flee in terror.

Night falls over the Forbidden Forest.

Deep within its tangled depths, a clearing holds a large pit. Within the pit, a dark mass squirms and shifts.

Looking closely, one could see it was a horde of spiders—large and small—crawling all over each other. The largest was the size of a horse; the smallest could fit in the palm of a hand. Their hairy heads and bristled bodies made for a grotesque, unsettling sight.

Very few creatures dared to venture into this region, for all intruders had been shredded and devoured.

Many more spiders were gathered outside the pit as well. One among them stood out: a spider the size of two elephants. It was ancient, with eight massive, cloudy, and sightless eyes. This was Aragog, the patriarch of them all—the very spider Hagrid had released into the forest fifty years ago.

At this moment, Aragog was listening to one of his offspring recount the events of the day.

"You say a wizard showed up to save that young dragon... Don't concern yourself with him. If that dragon dares return, we'll kill it next time."

Irritated, the blind spider paced back and forth, its limbs clicking ominously on the ground.

This agitation had been gnawing at Aragog for months now, and it was not unfamiliar—it was the primal fear that only one thing could evoke: the Basilisk. He had sensed it fifty years ago at Hogwarts. Now, it had returned.

After sensing the Basilisk's awakening, Aragog had seriously considered leaving the Forbidden Forest. But he had long since propagated an entire colony here, and they were well-adapted to the environment. Relocating them all was no simple task. He had clung to the faint hope that the creature might vanish again, just like it had fifty years ago.

But tonight, that fearsome presence felt even stronger.

Suddenly, a glow appeared deep in the forest.

Light was rare in the Forbidden Forest, day or night. The trees were jet-black, towering dozens of meters high, packed tightly together. Their thick canopies blocked out all sunlight.

Even during the day, entering the forest felt like stepping into midnight.

Though blind, Aragog still retained an acute awareness of his surroundings.

He immediately sensed a unicorn approaching—and not just a unicorn, but a person as well.

The unicorn was exquisite, gliding effortlessly across the snow without leaving the slightest trace. Though the snow was white, her coat was even purer, radiant with an icy light. Everywhere she stepped, she cast back the darkness like a luminous spirit.

Harry didn't know exactly where the spiders' lair was—but Snowy, the unicorn, did. Intimately intelligent, she had allowed Harry to ride on her back and brought him straight to the place.

Once at the edge of the clearing, Snowy refused to go further. She loathed the wicked aura emanating from within.

Harry gently stroked her mane, and she leapt away, bounding gracefully back into the snowy forest.

"Was it you lot who hurt my dragon today?" Harry asked.

Aragog couldn't quite grasp this boy's intent. Most disturbingly, there was something deeply unnatural about him. Aragog dared not act rashly.

Harry wasn't expecting an answer anyway.

In that moment, the shadow of Death descended.

The spiders that had begun surrounding Harry suddenly froze in place, collapsing to the ground as though nailed there. Though not particularly intelligent, they were overwhelmed with terror. An invisible scythe hung above their heads, ready to strike.

Every creature in the forest felt it and went utterly silent.

A slithering sound scraped across the snow, followed by the crash of trees being felled.

A massive serpent—dozens of meters long—slid into view.

Harry had known Basilisks were the natural enemy of spiders, but he hadn't expected their presence to be this effective. He'd only summoned the Basilisk to prevent any from escaping. Yet now, all the spiders lay flat, paralyzed, too afraid to move.

He was about to set the whole place ablaze when he paused in surprise. "You're saying... you're hungry and want to eat them?"

He had picked up the Basilisk's thoughts through the ring on his finger. Gazing out at the sea of bristly spider bodies, Harry wrinkled his nose. "Fine. But make it quick."

The Basilisk eagerly surged forward, sinking its fangs into the largest spider—Aragog—and killing it in one bite. Then it began feasting, jaws snapping open and shut as it devoured one spider after another.

Harry could hear the crunch of bones, the squelch of bodily fluids bursting, and the despairing shrieks of the spiders. Yet not one of them dared flee.

This was their natural predator—so fearsome they couldn't even think of resisting.

Soon, the Basilisk had devoured every last one.

Its thoughts conveyed satisfaction.

"All right, let's go back," Harry said.

Now visibly bulkier, the Basilisk slithered off toward Hogwarts, leaving a deep trench in its wake.

Harry waved his wand, and a gust of wind swept through, erasing all traces.

A week later, term ended.

The students, collectively relieved, left the castle in droves, save for a few who remained behind for various reasons.

A Muggle school would have been shut down long ago if a student had died, but Hogwarts was different. The magical world was different. Still, Dumbledore was nearing his limit under the mounting pressure.

Back in the Muggle world, Harry felt strangely at home. It was here, not the wizarding world, that truly felt like his place.

He had spent decades steeped in modern civilization. What influenced him most wasn't magic, but Muggles—their energy, their vibrancy, their constant change. Wizards, by contrast, were stagnant and stubborn. Decades could pass with hardly any progress.

As Christmas drew near, the festive spirit grew stronger. Shop windows everywhere were decorated with "Merry Christmas" signs and Santa Claus cutouts. Supermarkets were hung with holiday banners. People bustled about—families, groups of friends, young women shopping together.

"Cheryl, did you see that guy who just walked past? So handsome! Let's go get his number!" giggled a group of girls.

But Harry had already vanished.

He walked alone, but he didn't feel lonely. On the contrary, he loved the feeling.

It wasn't solitude he liked, and certainly not noise—it was the experience of being in the middle of lively chaos while no one bothered him.

He spent Christmas at the Broken Axe Tavern.

Though most staff had gone home for the holiday, the promise of significantly higher wages had convinced some to stay. All night, Harry was surrounded by beautiful women.

Some of the bolder ones even tried to seduce him.

He was only twelve, for Merlin's sake.

These women had worked at this astonishing tavern for half a year and had seen many wizards. Most were eccentric, yet fascinating in their own way.

But bound by their contracts, they couldn't even touch magic.

Eventually, their attention turned to Harry.

Young, wealthy, their boss, and not at all weird like the other wizards—sunny, handsome. What more could they ask for? Some even dreamed of getting him drunk and sneaking into his bed.

What? Twelve? Even better, some of the more lustful ones thought.

Unfortunately for them, Harry didn't drink. Their hopes were dashed.

A curvaceous woman came to report the tavern's six-month performance.

Excellent—the final month had brought in seven times more than the first.

More and more wizards were falling in love with the Broken Axe Tavern: its humane service, luxurious lodging, delicious food. Membership cards, phone reservations, birthday parties—wizards acted like bumpkins discovering city life.

The Broken Axe had become the most popular, most beloved pub in the magical world.

As Harry browsed the sales reports, his eyes were drawn to the mature woman in front of him. She seemed to be deliberately showing off her long legs and ample cleavage.

The other women were furious. Their manager was too cunning! Maybe the young boss liked mature types?

Understanding the seductress's plan, Harry felt a cold sweat run down his back.

What was this place—a den of man-eating fox spirits?
