Chapter 142 - Chapter 140: Legilimency and Occlumency!

"Was it that hard to guess? I only know a few wizards, and anyone with half a brain could tell how valuable an Invisibility Cloak is. Sure, it belonged to my father, but my parents are long dead—if someone didn't return it, nobody would have known. So the person who did must either be a good man... or filthy rich. Rich beyond reason."

"As for the people around me, the only ones I'd call decent are you and Hagrid. Hmm, if I gave this cloak to Hagrid, he could probably turn it into a short-sleeved shirt."

Dumbledore: "..."

"Ahem... let's talk about Legilimency instead. You're right—it's a spell that allows the caster to enter another person's emotions and mind through eye contact, and even view their memories!"

"Oh, how delightful..." Harry replied absentmindedly.

"Don't you think it's a fascinating spell—"

"It's terrifying, actually. If Voldemort used it as one of his core tools to rule his Death Eaters, it must be powerful." Harry still didn't seem very interested.

Dumbledore was a little frustrated. He had brought up Legilimency on purpose, hoping Harry would show curiosity so he could naturally segue into teaching him Occlumency. Originally, he had planned to wait another two years, but seeing Harry's remarkable magical talent, he felt the need to prepare earlier.

But he didn't want to directly tell Harry the real reason: that he needed to block Voldemort from peering into his mind, because Voldemort's soul fragment was inside Harry. He wanted Harry to slowly understand the wizarding world and Voldemort himself, to develop his own judgment, and then Dumbledore would reveal everything: Voldemort's past, the truth behind Harry's parents' death, the Horcruxes, and the love protection on Harry.

That was Dumbledore's well-meaning plan.

Unfortunately, he didn't know that Harry had already destroyed the soul fragment inside his mind.

"But I'm not worried at all," Harry said proudly, "because I learned a very obscure spell—Occlumency. It blocks others from invading your consciousness."

He looked at Dumbledore with a smug, show-off grin, but in reality, he was mentally exhausted from acting.

"What?!" Dumbledore was genuinely stunned. How could it be such a coincidence? This obscure spell—Harry just happened to find it and decided to learn it for fun?

Harry scrambled for a convincing excuse. "When I read about Voldemort using Legilimency to control his Death Eaters, it scared me. I thought: What if he peeks into my memories one day—what if he finds out how many times I wet the bed as a child? What then? So I didn't eat for three days and nights, and finally, from a remote corner of the library, I found this spell called Occlumency."

"Er..." Dumbledore didn't know what to say. He had planned to teach Harry Occlumency himself, and now... Harry already knew it?

"You really learned it?" Dumbledore asked seriously. This couldn't be taken lightly.

"Yeah. If you don't believe me, try using Legilimency on me. Honestly, I've learned it, but I've never tested it, so I'm not totally sure it works."

Total nonsense. Harry had never found any book on Occlumency—it was far too obscure and niche. But he had found Legilimency—in the Restricted Section.

Legilimency, being similar to Veritaserum, was banned by the Ministry of Magic. Naturally, it would be hidden away where students couldn't easily access it.

While he hadn't learned Occlumency, mastering Legilimency had helped him understand the principles behind defending one's mind. More importantly, his soul was vastly more powerful than most people's, so he wasn't afraid of mental invasions.

As the saying goes: Practice is the sole criterion for testing truth.

Harry had secretly taught Hermione the spell and let her try it on him. In the end, she helplessly admitted that she couldn't sense anything.

Maybe it was just because her spiritual strength was too weak, but Harry was confident—no one could break into his mind. Not even Voldemort or Dumbledore.

Dumbledore shook his head, smiling. "Do you know how much mental damage Legilimency can cause to its target? Forcibly reading someone's mind can leave lasting trauma, even permanent damage. You can't just test it like that."

Harry froze. Right, in the movies, every time Snape used Legilimency on him, Harry looked like he was being tortured—sweating, pale, taking a long time to recover. So how come when Hermione tried it, he didn't feel anything?

That confused Harry. Maybe Hermione hadn't succeeded?

But Hermione was a genius. Legilimency wasn't that hard—its success rate depended on willpower and soul strength.

Harry began to doubt. "Well, maybe we should try it anyway?"

Dumbledore, concerned about the matter, saw Harry's uncertainty and agreed.

"Don't worry, I'll start gently. I won't cause you any harm."

No wand was needed. Dumbledore's clear eyes locked on Harry's. For a moment, his gaze shimmered slightly.

Harry immediately sensed it—that was the signal for Legilimency.

"This…" Harry's eyes widened. The feeling was completely different from when Hermione did it.

Hermione's attempt felt like nothing—at most, a breeze. It even made Harry doubt whether she succeeded at all.

But now, he clearly felt a powerful force surge into his mind. Yet, he didn't feel violated. If anything, it was like a pickpocket trying to rob Sylvester Stallone.

Harry decided to put his theory into practice—he tried to expel the invader.

And so—

Dumbledore staggered backward, nearly falling, with a shocked expression on his face. He hadn't expected that.

Harry blinked. "Looks like I really have mastered Occlumency. Want to try again?"

Dumbledore caught his breath. "No need."

He hadn't gone all out, but even if he had, he suspected the result wouldn't have changed. Harry's mental strength was at least several times stronger than his own. When he was forcibly expelled by Harry's will, he couldn't resist at all.

It was hard to believe.

If someone dared use Legilimency to probe Harry's mind, and Harry responded with a mental counterattack, he could potentially shatter their mind completely.

Now Harry was certain—Hermione had been too weak, which is why he hadn't felt anything from her attempt.

Harry's "Occlumency" might differ from the standard version, but if it worked, that was all that mattered. Dumbledore was relieved.

The two of them entered the magical training room.

It was vast and tall. The room was mostly empty, with only a few scattered props along the walls for practicing spells.
