The office fell silent.
Dumbledore spoke gently, "Dragons are not allowed at school, Harry. It seems we'll have to send the dragon away."
But Harry wasn't ready to give up just because Dumbledore said so.
He blinked and said, "But Headmaster, I really want a dragon as a pet."
Truthfully, Dumbledore also felt a pang of regret. He was world-renowned for discovering the twelve uses of dragon's blood, and he had always held a particular fondness for dragons.
He shook his head and advised, "Harry, I understand your fascination with dragons at your age, but the reality is—we must give up that idea."
Suddenly, Harry said, "What if I raise the dragon in the Forbidden Forest?"
"The Ministry of Magic prohibits wizards from keeping dragons because they're powerful creatures and notoriously difficult to control. Historically, many wizarding families who attempted to raise dragons failed to supervise them properly, resulting in dragons flying into Muggle areas and causing massive destruction. The Ministry often spends months dealing with the aftermath. But if we keep the dragon in the Forbidden Forest—well, it's vast and remote, more than suitable for its growth. And we won't need to worry about it flying over Muggle towns and breathing fire."
Seeing Dumbledore's contemplative expression, Harry continued, "Besides, even if the Ministry technically forbids private dragon ownership, I believe that if you, Albus Dumbledore, notify the Ministry that Hogwarts needs a dragon for research purposes, they wouldn't dare refuse. After all, your reputation is unmatched. And it's not like they need to provide the dragon—all they have to do is say yes."
At some point, Dumbledore had stopped writing and was simply watching Harry speak.
Harry's words were clear, logical, and persuasive. It reminded Dumbledore of a student he had once taught.
His tone grew thoughtful. "Not bad, my boy. I think I can make that happen."
Professor McGonagall, who had known Dumbledore for many years, immediately sensed from his tone that he was leaning toward agreeing with this absurd request. She said sharply, "Do you have any idea what the columnists at The Daily Prophet will say? Just imagine: 'It seems Albus Dumbledore considers himself above the law now,' or 'Dumbledore's nose is growing upward…'"
Dumbledore smiled, entirely unbothered.
"You just spoil him," McGonagall huffed in frustration.
…
The group exited the Headmaster's office.
Hagrid still couldn't believe that Dumbledore had actually agreed to let them raise the dragon in the Forbidden Forest.
At the archway leading outside, Professor McGonagall said sternly, "Although the Headmaster has given his approval, he did not give you permission to be out at night. Understood? You may only visit your pet during daylight hours and on Sundays. Also, the dragon must be kept at the edge of the forest—do not go any deeper."
As she said this final part, she looked directly at Hagrid.
Hagrid nodded enthusiastically. "We'll keep Norbert at the forest's edge!"
Harry added, "I still think Big Black sounds cooler."
Suddenly, a voice called out, "Harry!"
He turned around to see Hermione walking toward them.
Harry immediately panicked—Professor McGonagall was still right behind him!
Her expression darkened further. She was already furious about Harry sneaking out of the castle and keeping a dragon. And now, one of her best students was wandering around during curfew too?
Her voice turned icy. "Miss Granger, are you unaware that students are forbidden from wandering the grounds at night?"
Hermione hadn't seen Professor McGonagall at all. Between the darkness and Hagrid's massive frame, it was no wonder she hadn't noticed her.
Without another word, McGonagall announced, "Fifty points from Gryffindor for your disobedience," then turned on her heel and stormed off. She had no desire to remain there another second.
Professor McGonagall never went easy on her students, not even her own House. That was something Harry respected—but also feared.
Hagrid patted Harry on the shoulder with a helpless expression, then headed off into the night.
Harry turned to Hermione. "Hermione, what are you doing out so late?"
She was still reeling from her run-in with Professor McGonagall. "Oh no… I just lost fifty points for the House."
Harry winced and replied calmly, "Tonight, Professor McGonagall already took two hundred points from me."
"What?!" Hermione gasped and covered her mouth. "Are you serious?"
Harry nodded nonchalantly.
It's true—misery loves company. Seeing someone even worse off made Hermione feel a bit better. Her guilt began to ease.
But almost immediately, she grew anxious again.
"What did you do? Is there any way to convince her to reverse the punishment?" she asked urgently.
This wasn't twenty points—they were talking about two hundred. Tomorrow morning, when the students saw the huge shift in the House Point hourglasses, they'd all think something had gone wrong.
Two hundred and fifty points… Gryffindor would fall from first place to last in a single night.
Harry tilted his head. "You first. Why were you still up?"
Hermione lowered her head. "I was in the library today, and I saw Malfoy take a note from one of the books you were reading yesterday… so I snatched it back."
Oh.
Now Harry understood. That was Hagrid's note about the dragon egg hatching. He must've left it in the book by accident.
Malfoy must've seen it—or maybe stumbled upon it. Either way, that didn't matter.
Because Harry hadn't even seen Malfoy that night.
"So you didn't see me in the dorm, and were worried Malfoy would take a teacher to Hagrid's cabin and catch me breaking the rules… so you came to warn me?" Harry asked.
If Hermione had looked up, she would've seen the smile on his face.
"Mhm…"
"Well, everything's fine now," Harry said, reaching out to ruffle her hair.
As his hand tousled her hair, that familiar gesture stirred something bittersweet inside Hermione's heart.
Making up really could be that easy.
So close, so natural… it felt like the last two months of distance had never even happened.
Later, when Harry lay in bed, a deep sense of peace filled him. It was the best sleep he'd had in months.
As for losing two hundred and fifty points in one night… Harry didn't care at all.
But as it turned out, the next morning, the entire school was in an uproar.
