Malachi.
I feel Melanie shuffle beside me. Though the movement isn't significant, but it's something. I continue.
"She used to fly to our neighbors, when I wasn't looking. I always warned her." I release a bitter laugh. "She was a bird, but she was smart. I had a whisperer train me. I always wondered where she went. I wanted her to always remain with me. Then one day, I discovered what she was about."
I turn a grim face to her.
"I found her on the shoulder of a boy I despised in high school. A boy, who always bullied other kids. Funny thing, he was showering her with affections. I didn't like that." I pause.
She watches me with these astonished orbs, even though she's still withdrawn.
"When she returned, I had either of two options. Keep her and allow the memory put a permanent wedge between us. Or…"
She looks at me with such interest, I almost find it funny.
I don't continue. I spoon some food again and extend it to her.
Instead of accepting it, she asks.
