The Moth Bar—just another ordinary gathering spot in Dogtown. That was Karl's first impression.
And it was just that—ordinary.
Creep factor? It didn't match Afterlife. Familiarity? Nowhere near Wild Dog Bar. Services? Nowhere close to Lizzie's. Everything about it was painfully average. There was nothing particularly memorable.
The first person Karl noticed wasn't Maine or any of the others at the bar—but the bartender.
She had short golden-blonde hair, a few freckles across her nose, and an otherwise unremarkable face. She wore a dark green jacket with the sleeves pulled up, and there were visible signs of chest cyberware. Karl glanced at her a couple of times, then frowned.
Was it just his imagination? He had a strange feeling that she was capable—like, actually capable. Just a glance, and he already sensed she might even be able to take him in a fight.
Was he just exhausted? Was he really at the point where a random bartender in Dogtown gave him that vibe?
Karl tried to brush off the feeling. He'd had a similar reaction to a bartender at Dino's in the city center—a Black guy who had also felt surprisingly dangerous. Now, here in Dogtown, another bartender gave him that same impression. Was it him? Did he have some subconscious criteria for evaluating bartenders?
Was this some old-school American flick where every badass character just happened to be tending bar?
Trying to shake off the thought, Karl instinctively gave the blonde bartender another glance—and just then, she looked back. She'd been chatting with a female customer but turned toward him.
Their eyes met.
For a brief instant, Karl caught the flash of shock in her gaze—quickly suppressed.
She recognized him.
Karl hadn't worn any disguise. Being recognized in Dogtown, which was still loosely under Night City's umbrella, wasn't all that surprising. But—
Out of the corner of his eye, Karl caught something else.
The bartender's body had moved slightly. The motion was subtle, gone as quickly as the surprise in her eyes—but if she had completed the movement, her hand would've gone to her waist, where she likely carried a sidearm.
A bartender carrying a gun wasn't weird. But that draw motion—
It was too clean. Too automatic. Like someone who'd been trained to do it.
Karl couldn't say for sure—it was just a flash of movement—but he took note. Filed it away.
Maybe it wasn't just his instincts being weird. Maybe this bartender really was something.
These days, even bartenders came with hidden skills.
"Oh my, a handsome one just walked in."
The blonde recovered fast. She stepped up to Karl with a dazzling smile. "What can I get you, handsome?"
"Sweet tea," Karl replied.
Just then, Maine turned around after hearing the voice. The moment he saw Karl, he grinned. "Yo! Karl, you're here already? That was fast. Where's Oliver and the others?"
"Still parking. Looks like the area's a bit crowded, so they're setting up some alerts."
Karl nodded toward the rest of Maine's crew. "Good afternoon, everyone."
"Yo, Karl!" Pilar greeted, waving his gold-plated cyber-fingers. "Long time no see. How's life in the city?"
"Same old, same old."
Karl thought about it—there wasn't much he could share. And what he could? Pretty boring. He glanced around and sat down beside Maine.
As he did, Rebecca leaned over and gave him a heartfelt thanks. "Hey, thanks for my dad's gun. When the drone dropped it off, me and my brother were shocked. We didn't think we'd ever see it again."
"No need to thank me. I just happened to spot it and figured I'd grab it."
Karl chatted while scanning the room.
Maine, Pilar, Rebecca, Dorio, Kiwi, and Falco were all here—but two were missing.
"Where are David and Lucy?"
"David's prepping for exams. Time's almost up. Lucy's helping him study," Rebecca answered.
"Lucy? Tutoring David?" Karl blinked.
His first instinct was disbelief. David was a strong student. Could Lucy handle that?
Then he remembered—Lucy had been part of an elite program growing up. She had plenty of specialized training. Teaching David a few things about hacking? Definitely within her wheelhouse. Especially since Arasaka Academy exams covered that.
"Makes sense. If he's got tests coming up, he's got his hands full."
Karl said it casually. Age-wise, he wasn't far from David himself. But test prep? That was a student problem. He was a merc now. Different world.
"Yo, Maine."
Just as Karl finished asking, Oliver and the others entered the bar, having parked and set up their security protocols.
"Welcome, gentlemen. What can I get you?"
The blonde bartender was quick to greet them. Oliver and Jack each ordered their drinks. V, after eyeing her a few more times, went with a beer. At the same time, a ping appeared in their squad channel:
V: "This bartender's kind of… off."
Oliver: "Off how?"
Still smiling and seated as if nothing were wrong, Oliver replied over comms. "What exactly do you mean?"
V: "Can't put my finger on it. She just seems… capable."
Karl: "Glad I'm not the only one. Thought I was imagining it, but if you felt it too…"
T-Bug: "I've got eyes on her. You all just act normal."
Jack: "With you watching, I'm good."
Jack sat down calmly, showing no hint of suspicion. He and Oliver positioned themselves on either side of the bar—effectively flanking the bartender.
At that moment, the blonde bartender was sending someone a message.
It was short.
"I've spotted KK's squad."
