The human way of thinking can be roughly divided into two categories: rationality and sensibility.
Rationality and sensibility are like the two ends of a balance. Different individuals always sway back and forth on this balance, perhaps showing a phase-wise or individualized tendency. However, there is no person who is absolutely rational, nor anyone who is absolutely emotional.
Fear, as an emotion, is the most extreme of human emotional states.
Among all human fears, the fear of death is the deepest and most enduring.
The fear of death can maximize human sensibility. When this emotional fear reaches a certain limit, it does not completely tip the balance of rationality and sensibility. Human emotions will naturally continue to enhance the weight of rationality, thereby maintaining the balance. This is why there is the saying that fear can lead to either breakdown or absolute calmness.
