Chapter 27 - Crossing the Barrier

Raine stood still, his eyes fixed on the empty space Renard had left behind. There was no trace of movement, no ripple in the air, no sound to indicate his departure. It was as if he had never been there at all.

But Raine wasn't foolish enough to believe that.

He had been there.

And what he had said… was far more dangerous than it seemed.

"The end of the barrier…" he muttered, his voice barely audible.

He didn't fully understand what it meant, but he didn't need a complete explanation. He could feel it. Something was moving in the shadows, beyond his current comprehension.

And something told him that the answer he sought… wasn't far.

But before he could think any further, he felt it.

A gaze.

It wasn't just any gaze—it was the presence of something beyond the ordinary. It wasn't a human. It wasn't even someone he recognized.

Someone else was watching him.

Raine didn't move immediately, but he slowly raised his hand as the Black Butterfly behind him flickered with a deep violet glow.

"How long do you plan to hide?" he asked in a quiet yet sharp voice.

For a moment, there was no response.

Then—

A single step shattered the silence.

From the shifting shadows between the trees, a figure finally emerged.

Tall, cloaked in black, with a hood that obscured most of his features. But his eyes… his eyes were unlike anything Raine had ever seen. They had no distinct color; instead, they reflected everything… and nothing at the same time.

He wasn't just a human.

But he wasn't a god either.

"I wasn't expecting you to notice me so quickly," the man said in a soft voice, one that carried an inexplicable weight.

It wasn't a terrifying voice, yet it wasn't entirely human either.

"You're not very good at hiding," Raine replied, studying the man before him.

The man didn't answer immediately. Instead, he took another step forward.

"I've always wondered… what someone with a spirit like yours would be like."

"And you?" Raine raised an eyebrow slightly. "What makes you so interested?"

"It's simple." The man smiled faintly, though the smile never reached his eyes. "I'm here… to see if you are worthy of crossing."

At that moment, the air changed.

It wasn't just a shift in energy—it was as if the very laws of the world began to tremble.

"So, you're not just some intruder," Raine said, slowly moving his fingers while the Black Butterfly fluttered behind him.

"An intruder? No, I am something entirely different," the man responded as he slowly raised his hand.

And in that instant, something formed in the air—

A spear, but not one made of metal.

It was forged from interwoven shadows, as if it were a fragment of another reality.

"I have seen many try to reach what lies beyond the barrier," the man said, twirling the spear in his hand. "But only a few have ever succeeded."

"And you're the one who decides that?" Raine asked, though he wasn't expecting an answer.

Because he already knew.

This man wasn't just anyone—he was the Barrier's Guardian.

There was no need for more words.

Because the battle had already begun before either of them could declare it.

Raine moved first, his hand glowing with a violet light as the Black Butterfly surged forward, leaving behind a trail of dark sparks in the air.

But the man wasn't slow.

The moment Raine moved, the spear vanished from his hand—only to reappear directly above Raine's head, as if it had emerged from the void itself.

It wasn't just speed.

It was a rearrangement of reality.

But Raine wasn't unfamiliar with such attacks.

He turned at the perfect moment, and as the spear descended, his body had already moved beyond its range. The Black Butterfly traced a circle around him, releasing fragments of energy that slowed the spear's descent.

Then, before the man could reform his weapon, Raine had already struck.

But the moment his attack landed—

The man disappeared completely.

Raine stood still for a moment, his eyes scanning rapidly.

He had attacked directly. He had seen his target.

But he wasn't there.

"You're faster than I expected," the voice came from behind him, but Raine didn't turn immediately.

Because he knew.

This man… wasn't just using speed.

He was moving through points that didn't exist.

"You have something of your own, don't you?" Raine murmured, adjusting his stance.

"Not quite," the man responded, appearing once more a few steps away. "I'm simply moving in a way you can't see yet."

"But…" he continued, as the spear returned to his hand. "We can test that now."

At that moment, Raine felt it.

Something different.

Not energy. Not a technique.

Something beyond his understanding.

The barrier wasn't just a gate or an invisible wall.

It was a separate layer of existence.

And the man before him… wasn't just a guardian.

He was part of the barrier itself.

"I understand now…" Raine murmured as the Black Butterfly began to glow even more intensely.

"So, are you ready to cross?" the man asked, his voice unchanged, yet this time carrying something new.

"I don't need your permission," Raine replied as he stretched out his hand.

And at that moment—

The barrier opened before him.

But it wasn't what he had expected.

Because it wasn't just a path.

It was the end of one world… and the beginning of something else.
