The road to Konoha was peaceful.
Maybe a little too peaceful.
The sound of our footsteps mixed with the occasional rustling of leaves as the morning breeze passed through the trees. Birds flew between the branches above us, and every now and then, I could hear Sakura complaining about something that Sasuke had done—or rather, something she thought Sasuke had done.
It felt normal, almost like nothing had happened. But I couldn't completely enjoy it. My mind kept returning to that strange presence from earlier. Whoever had been watching us was still somewhere out there.
I couldn't see them.
I couldn't sense their chakra.
But I could feel something.
A faint pressure at the edge of my awareness.
It wasn't strong enough to tell me exactly where they were, but now that Kurama had taught me how to recognize intent, I knew that what I had felt wasn't my imagination. I kept my hands inside my pockets as I walked behind Sasuke and Sakura.
Kakashi was a few steps behind me, casually reading his book as if nothing in the world could possibly concern him. Typical Kakashi-sensei. Then again, I knew better. He noticed everything. Even when he pretended not to.
'Kura-nii.'
"I'm listening."
'They're still there, right?' There was a short pause.
"Yes." My eyes moved toward the trees. I saw nothing aside from trunks, leaves, and sunlight filtering through the branches.
'You still can't identify them?'
"No."
That answer bothered me more than I wanted to admit. Kurama wasn't easily surprised. And he certainly wasn't someone who would admit he couldn't identify something unless he genuinely couldn't.
'Then what should I do?' His answer came almost immediately.
"Nothing."
I nearly stopped walking.
'Nothing?'
"Do not chase what you cannot see." I frowned. That was easier said than done.
'What if they're following us because they want to attack?'
"Then let them make the first move." I wasn't particularly fond of that plan.
'That's your advice?'
"Yes."
'You're terrible at reassuring people.'
I could practically hear the amusement in his voice.
"You're alive, aren't you?"
'So far.'
"Then stop worrying."
I exhaled slowly. Sometimes talking to Kurama was impossible. But I knew what he was trying to teach me. Not everything needed to be attacked. Not every unknown presence needed to be confronted. Sometimes the best thing a shinobi could do was observe.
Wait.
Understand.
Then act.
It was probably another part of the lesson. The moment I realized that, Kurama spoke again.
"Your lesson isn't about finding them, brat."
'Then what is it about?'
"Patience." I stared ahead. Of course.
Even when Kurama was teaching me something new, he somehow found a way to turn it into a lesson about something else. I heard footsteps approaching from ahead.
"Naruto?" I looked up. Sakura had slowed down enough to walk beside me.
"You've been awfully quiet."
"Have I?" She gave me a look.
"Yes." I thought about it. Normally, I would have been talking nonstop by now. Probably annoying Sasuke or bothering Kakashi, and probably asking when we'd get home. Instead, I'd spent most of the journey thinking about something none of them could sense.
"Just thinking."
"About what?"
I considered giving her the truth. Then I remembered Kurama's warning. Not yet.
"Food."
Sakura blinked.
"Food?"
"Yep."
She stared at me for several seconds before shaking her head.
"You're impossible."
"That's what everyone keeps telling me." From ahead of us came a quiet voice.
"Because it's true."
I immediately recognized it. "Wow, Im hurt!" He glanced back.
"What?"
"You just insulted me"
"No, I did not."
"You definitely did."
"I stated a fact."
Sakura covered her mouth, trying not to laugh. I pointed toward Sasuke.
"See? This is what happens when you let your little brother become too comfortable."
"I am not your little brother."
"You called me Nii-san."
Sasuke's expression immediately stiffened. Sakura looked between us.
"You really do call him that though. "Sasuke's ears turned slightly red.
"That's not important."
I couldn't resist. I laughed.
"It is very important."
"Naruto."
"Nii-san."
"Stop."
I could hear the warning in his voice.
"Okay, okay."
I let him off the hook. For now. Sakura continued walking beside me, but I noticed something different about her. She wasn't as focused on Sasuke as she normally was. Instead, she kept glancing toward her hands. Almost as though she were thinking about something.
Sakura stayed unusually quiet as we continued along the road. I noticed it after a while, her eyes kept moving.
Left.
Right.
Ahead.
Then back toward the trees. I raised an eyebrow.
'Sakura's actually paying attention.'
It was different from yesterday. Before, she had watched because she was trying to understand what was happening. Now, she was watching because she was trying to anticipate it. That was progress. Yesterday, Sakura had been trying to figure out what she was missing. Today, she was already trying to apply it. That mattered more than anything she could have told me.
"Not bad, brat". Kurama's voice rumbled inside my mind.
'She's learning.' I glanced toward the trees.
"Wow! That's satisfy my lungs."
I almost choked.
'You could just say you're proud of her.'
"Don't push your luck."
I had to bite back a laugh.
There was something else, though. Something I hadn't told the others. The strange feeling I'd been sensing since we left the village hadn't disappeared. If anything, it had gotten closer. I narrowed my eyes. Whatever had been following us was still out there. And this time, I wasn't going to pretend I hadn't noticed. Then I felt it again.
Stronger.
My steps slowed.
I didn't turn my head; I didn't need to. The sensation wasn't coming from chakra. It was something much more subtle.
A direction.
A will.
Someone's attention was fixed on us.
'Kura-nii.'
"I know."
'They're closer.'
"Yes."
I swallowed.
'Should I tell Kakashi?'
Kurama didn't answer immediately. Then--
'No.'
My eyebrows drew together.
'Why?'
"Your ability is still new. You don't yet understand everything you're sensing."
I knew he was right. If I told Kakashi that someone was following us without being able to explain how I knew, he'd start asking questions. And Kakashi-sensei was very good at asking questions without making them sound like questions.
'So what do I do?'
"Observe."
I took another slow breath.
'And if they attack?'
Kurama's voice changed. The playful tone disappeared.
"Then protect them."
There was no hesitation in his answer. That part didn't need any thought. Of course I would. I looked ahead at Sasuke and Sakura. Sasuke was listening to Sakura talk about something. She was explaining an idea she had for improving her reaction speed.
Sasuke occasionally answered with a short comment. They looked completely unaware of what was happening around them. Good. I'd rather keep it that way.
"Naruto."
I looked toward Kakashi. He had lowered his book.
"You seem distracted."
I quickly brought my attention back to him.
"Just excited to get home."
Kakashi studied me. His eye narrowed slightly. He knew. Maybe he didn't know exactly what I was sensing, but he knew I wasn't telling him everything. For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then he returned his gaze to his book.
"Is that so?"
"Yep."
He didn't press further. I appreciated that. Kakashi trusted me enough to let me decide when I was ready to talk. And maybe... I trusted him enough to tell him eventually. Just not yet.
The journey continued. The trees became fewer. The road became wider.
And eventually, I saw them. The massive gates of Konoha stood in the distance.
My steps slowed.
We were home.
Sakura's entire expression changed.
"We're finally back!"
She looked genuinely excited. After everything that happened in the Land of Waves, I couldn't blame her. Sasuke remained composed, but I knew him well enough now to notice the small change in his expression. He was happy to be back too.
As for me...
I looked at the village gates.
Home.
For a moment, I simply stood there. Then I noticed something, the sensation was gone, my eyes narrowed.
'Kura-nii.'
"Yes."
'I can't feel them anymore.'
"Neither can I."
I looked behind us. The road was empty. The trees were still. Not even the birds seemed disturbed.
'They left?'
Kurama was silent. Then his answer came.
"No."
I felt a chill run down my spine.
'What do you mean, no?'
"They didn't leave."
I looked toward the village. People moved through the streets. Merchants were setting up their stalls. Shinobi passed through the gates. Children ran past each other, laughing. Everything looked normal. Completely normal.
But somewhere inside that village...
Someone was hiding, who had followed us all the way from the Land of Waves. Someone who knew how to suppress their chakra, whose intent was hidden well enough that even Kurama couldn't immediately identify them.
My fingers curled slightly inside my pockets.
'Then they're already inside.'
"Yes."
I stared at the village. There were hundreds of people inside. Maybe thousands. How was I supposed to find one person among all of them?
Kurama's voice came quietly.
"You don't." 'I don't understand him sometimes. He always explained things in such short, cryptic answers that I sometimes wondered if he did it on purpose.
"You observe. That's what's your training brat."
I understood. This wasn't about hunting them down. Not yet. Whoever this person was, they had chosen to remain hidden. That meant they didn't want to be found. So, I wouldn't give them a reason to reveal themselves.
"Naruto?"
I turned. Sasuke was standing a few steps ahead of me. He had noticed that I had stopped.
"Coming?"
For a second, I looked at him.
Then at Sakura.
Then at Kakashi.
These three people had become important to me in ways I hadn't expected. I wasn't going to let anyone hurt them.
"Yeah."
I caught up with them. As we passed beneath the gates, I looked toward the village once more. The strange feeling remained absent. But somehow, that made me more nervous than when I could feel it. Because now I knew something I hadn't known before.
Not being able to sense someone didn't mean they weren't there. Sometimes... It meant they were very good at hiding. I continued walking beside my team, keeping my expression relaxed as we made our way deeper into Konoha.
Nobody else knew.
Not Sasuke.
Not Sakura.
Not even Kakashi.
For now, the secret remained between Kurama and me. And somewhere within the village... Someone was waiting. I just didn't know what they were waiting for.
'Kura-nii?'
"I'm here."
'Stay with me.'
There was a brief silence, then his voice softened.
"Always, brat."
I kept walking. Home was supposed to be the end of the journey. But somehow, I already knew better.
For us...
This was only the beginning.
