Chapter 23 - The Ghost That Wasn’t

The evening air was heavy as Yami sat at the far end of a wooden bench outside the guild.

His hands still shook. His breathing was still irregular.

Kira.

She was not his sister. He knew that.

But whenever he looked at her, his mind could not comprehend it.

Rei and Lina were standing next to him, staring at him. They didn't know what to say.

Meanwhile, Kira—who had been given some spare clothes and food by the guild—sat a few feet away, fidgeting.

She kept looking over at Yami, clearly worried, but too afraid to approach him.

Lucky Luke, on the other hand—

"Ah, ah, ah," he said, sitting cross-legged on a barrel, munching on an apple as if all this was some kind of game he was watching. "This is really quite an interesting dilemma."

Rei scowled at him. "Luke. Shut up."

Lucky smiled. "What? I'm just saying! Look at the kid, he's all messed up!"

Lina crossed her arms. "We can see that."

Lucky leaned over to one side. "So, what are we going to do? Just sit here uncomfortably, or do we go say something?"

Silence.

Yami's mind was a mess

He knew he had to say something. But what?

He clenched his fists, trying to talk. "…Who are you?"

Kira flinched. "I-I already said… My name is Kira."

".Why were those guys after you?"

She looked down. "I… don't know. I've been by myself for a while. They tried to take me, so I ran."

Yami's jaw tightened. "Alone?"

She nodded. "I don't have a home. I just… keep moving."

Yami felt his chect ache again.

Just like his sister. Alone. Vulnerable.

He took a deep breath. Calm down.

But then—

Lucky snapped his fingers suddenly.

"Oh! I just remembered something—I have an ability for that!"

Everyone gazed at him.

Rei furrowed her brow. "An ability... for what, exactly?"

Lucky smiled.

"[Possession: Apollo, God of Truth!]"

Ding!

[Apollo's Blessing Activated!]

[Effect: The target must tell the truth.]

Kira blinked. "Huh?"

Lucky rubbed his hands together. "Now! Be honest—who are you, really?"

Kira's eyes widened. "W-Wait, what?!"

Yami stood up, his heart pounding.

This was it.

The truth.

Kira opened her mouth… and spoke.

"I… I don't know. I don't remember anything before a year ago."

Silence.

Yami's breath hitched.

Lina frowned. "Amnesia?"

Kira nodded quickly. "Yes! I don't recall anything before waking up in a forest a year ago. I only know my name because someone told me."

Yami's head reeled.

No memories? One year ago?

Could it be a coincidence?

Or was there something more?

Lucky smirked. "Oooooh. Now this is getting interesting."

Rei exhaled. "We don't need your commentary."

Yami took deep breaths. He did not know what this was yet. But he knew something.

He faced Kira and spoke—

".Come with us."

Kira's eyes widened. "W-What?"

"I don't know why," Yami admitted, clenching his fists. "But I feel like… I have to protect you."

Kira froze.

Her face eased. Then, slowly—

She smiled. "…Okay."
