Anne's heart thudded uneasily. She sensed it immediately — something wasn't right. The tension radiating from the butler only deepened her anxiety.
"Is… is everything okay?" she asked.
"Please, madam." He gestured toward the open car door. "You will understand once you get there."
Anne hesitated for a moment longer before finally sliding into the back seat. The butler quickly closed the door behind her and climbed into the passenger seat. Without another word, the driver pulled away from the curb.
Anne gripped her bag tightly on her lap, staring out of the tinted windows as the city blurred past. A knot twisted in her stomach. She didn't know what was waiting for her at the mansion.
Across the street, Lorie stood still, her sharp eyes locked on the scene unfolding before her. Quickly raising her phone, she snapped several pictures of Anne getting into the car with the elderly man.
