As soon as Asia stepped inside his house, Adam felt a twinge of embarrassment. Since the fight with the fallen angel, he'd done little more than clean and reorganize everything, so remnants of the battle—like a countertop split in half and a punctured wall—still stood out prominently...
Fortunately, this didn't seem to dampen Asia's mood in the slightest. Adam watched as the adorable nun observed the interior with fascination in her eyes, making him wonder just how isolated her life had been from the outside world.
'Actually, that makes sense. Even across two worlds, religious customs don't seem all that different.' Adam scratched his chin, following the girl as she curiously wandered around the house.
"Sorry for the mess. I haven't had enough time to fix everything properly."
"!" She gave a little jump, as if suddenly realizing her behavior, then turned to him with a faint, embarrassed blush and a slight bow. Wandering around someone's house like this right after arriving might have seemed disrespectful, so her shyness was understandable. "O-Oh, I'm sorry for my attitude, Adam-sama."
Luckily, Adam wasn't the type to mind. In fact, he found it rather endearing, so he had no complaints. "Don't worry about it."
"..." An odd silence hung between them as Adam studied her, briefly pondering the way she had addressed him. "Sama...?"
Asia clasped her hands together, her expression still timid, her gaze uncertain—perhaps because she'd been called out for the honorific change. "W-Well, I read that when you respect someone deeply, you should address them as 'sama.' And I respect Adam-sama very much for saving me... Is there a problem?"
Adam stared at her for a few seconds, considering her words—but mostly just admiring how cute she looked while explaining so bashfully.
'If Robert saw me now, he'd call me a sis-con…' He chuckled at the thought.
As for the honorific, Adam didn't really care. His mind wasn't too accustomed to their use, but he couldn't be bothered to correct her... Though, if he were honest, he preferred the conventional Western approach.
"I really don't mind, but since we're both foreigners, you don't have to force yourself to use it if you're uncomfortable."
Asia's eyes sparkled for a moment at his positive response, and with a cute nod, she seemed satisfied. Maybe she had taken a liking to Japanese customs after studying them... Well, if it made her happy, Adam wouldn't say anything.
After showing her around the living room and the small kitchen, Adam guided her upstairs, where the main bedroom and a small storage room were located.
"Alright, Asia, let me show you your room," he said, gripping the doorknob. "It's nothing too fancy, so let me know if you don't like it."
"Adam-sama saved me, so I'll always appreciate whatever I'm given!" she declared with confidence, fully believing her own words.
Adam smiled appreciatively and opened the door, revealing a simple room—a wardrobe for clothes, a bed in the center with a drawer beside it, nothing extravagant.
And seeing it, Adam couldn't help but curse himself. He hadn't known he'd one day bring Asia to live with him, but it was still frustrating that he had so little to offer.
Luckily, Asia was too pure to care about the room's simplicity. With a grateful smile, she stepped inside, looking around as if just being welcomed was more than enough. After being cast out by the Church, she'd been given far less than the bare minimum.
"It's perfect," she said genuinely, turning back to Adam before suddenly throwing her arms open and launching herself at him. He caught her in a warm hug.
Adam chuckled softly at her grateful gesture. "Glad you like it."
These hugs, her smile, the warmth in her eyes... Adam could easily get used to this.
. . .
When night fell, Adam sat on the couch in the living room, several papers spread out in front of him. Runes, equations, and small notes covered the pages as he tried to decipher them.
After digging through his memories of the time he'd studied magic, he'd managed to recall some equations and runes, compiling them to better understand them.
Norse magic, Greek magic, demonic magic, human magic—while all were called "magic," there were notable differences. Norse and Greek magic seemed entirely dependent on their mythologies, relying on runic symbols and even incantations in their native tongues.
Human magic, on the other hand, functioned in a far more eccentric way compared to the others. Through equations and calculations, humans had developed a system that could rival demonic magic. Adam assumed this was their method of manipulating the body's internal mana reserves, simulating the "demonic power" of devils.
'But how strange…'
Shifting his gaze forward, Adam narrowed his eyes when he noticed a ripple in the air as he focused. Tiny, colored specks floated around the environment, mingling with something he couldn't quite explain—yet could sense with startling clarity.
Even before his soul had merged, Adam had been able to notice these inconsistencies in the environment—raw spiritual energy manifesting in the air. But after awakening, this ability had only intensified with each passing day.
Not just seeing it—feeling it.
At some point, a few humans had used this ambient energy to wield what Adam now called Primordial Magic. Compared to modern systems, this method seemed outdated, weak—but Adam couldn't ignore its potential.
He knew Youkai utilized spiritual energy for their own magic system, so mana-based magic wasn't inherently weak. It was just that, for humans, it was inefficient—not everyone was attuned to nature, and its effectiveness was limited.
Taking that into account, equation-based magic was the better option.
'Something to study further…' Still, the idea fascinated him. He could definitely spare some time to delve deeper.
Now, as for the next magic system...
His eyes scanned the papers before him as he pulled another sheet from his pocket—a demonic rune.
Demonic magic, a system based on the use of demonic power unique to devils. Compared to other systems, it seemed the simplest, relying on the user's internal reserves, imagination, and common sense.
A power that, on the surface, appeared limitless—but Adam knew there had to be restrictions. Otherwise, the devils wouldn't have been so thoroughly crushed in the Great War.
Adam studied the rune for a moment but, finding no inconsistencies, set it aside. The power of imagination was tempting, and Adam felt that creating something similar wasn't impossible—especially given the strange way his own life energy behaved.
It was another subject he intended to study in depth. Becoming a devil was out of the question, but he had to admit they had a great system supporting them.
"Adam-sama?"
Blinking at the soft voice, he turned to see Asia standing behind the couch, dressed in an oversized hoodie that drowned her small frame, her cheeks flushed as she clasped her hands shyly.
And, of course, being a calm and rational man, he nodded in satisfaction. As a man thousands of years old, this wasn't enough to make him drool like a hormonal teenager—but he could still appreciate the cute sight like a balm for his eyes.
"W-Well… After all my clothes fell on the floor, I thought it wouldn't be ideal to wear them. I hope this isn't a problem."
Adam didn't quite follow her logic, but he wouldn't question her decision. "No problem here."
Asia nodded happily, then stepped around to his side, her curious eyes scanning the table full of papers. "What's all this?" she asked, sitting beside him.
Adam, who had been flipping through some pages, paused and turned to her. "This?"
With a small smile, he snapped his fingers—a magic circle forming around them, leaving Asia wide-eyed. 'Hm… Not bad for a first attempt.'
"Magic."
A protective barrier—something simple, nothing he'd put much effort into. In fact, human magic felt surprisingly natural to him, likely due to his millennia of knowledge and memorization skills.
Still, he didn't see this as a grand achievement. After all, he hadn't cast anything too complex.
Of course, without anyone to compare himself to, Adam couldn't realize just how astonishing this was for someone who, until days ago, had been little different from an ordinary human.
"Is this like the power God gave me?" Asia asked excitedly, leaning closer.
But Adam kept a safe distance—he didn't want any awkward situations. "Your power is called a Sacred Gear, granted at birth. But magic can be learned if you work hard enough."
It was a little ironic coming from him.
"Oooh!" she gasped in surprise.
"Would you like to learn?"
"Eh?! R-Really? I can?"
"Of course. But it won't be easy."
Asia nodded firmly, puffing her cheeks with determination. "I'll do my best to make Adam-sama proud!"
"Glad to hear it."
And with that, the two leaned in as Adam began explaining the basics to Asia... Oblivious to the way she kept inching closer, sniffing him as a blush spread across her face.
Well—not oblivious. Just... ignoring it.
