Chapter 383 – On the Road

Eight hours earlier.

Jason woke up early in the morning. After opening the curtains in his room, he looked at the dark sky through the window, went to the bathroom to wash his face, and then quickly headed to the door.

As he shook his aching neck, after having slept face down due to his back injury all this time, his body felt uncomfortable.

"It seems I got used to living with a bit more peace in this life. If I hadn't had these problems before, my death would have come faster than expected…"

Thinking about that, Jason walked toward the main communications room where Tyler worked.

Now that the hidden dangers within the base had been eliminated, it would be able to develop more steadily in the future. The foundations of the four main buildings in the central wall area had now been completed, so construction would begin soon once the underground conduits were built.

Upon reaching the door, Jason looked at the officers outside, and they immediately gave a military salute. "Glory to humanity!"

"Good work!"

After acknowledging them, Jason went inside and saw the numerous screens right in front of him. Farther ahead was a huge screen showing all the camera footage from the base.

Without trying to bother anyone, Jason slowly approached a seat and sat down. This place was the most modern one and from where communications within the base were transmitted. Tyler, as a computer expert, intended to take control of a satellite before they lost their function.

This idea was accepted by Jason and many leaders of protected zones, so once the base was established, Tyler planned to attempt to take control of a satellite.

It was not as easy as it seemed. First of all, he would need more than just knowing how to operate a computer; he needed special equipment and a detailed plan that could take months or even years.

"This is the first time you've been here, right?"

A voice interrupted his thoughts, so Jason turned around and said, "That's the case, do you live in here?"

Tyler smiled when he heard Jason's joke and said, "Well, my job is to make sure that communities are never disconnected. Besides all that, I have to maintain the points system so no problems arise."

"Since you're here, how are your injuries doing? It was impressive to see how you faced that special-class walker, its size was incredible."

Jason sighed, having no concrete answer. If he was honest, he also didn't know how he survived something like that, so he said, "The persistent pain is what bothers me the most, but with the medication everything is much better."

"How is the operation in Birmingham going?"

"Mobilizing the walkers to special fields was of great help. All of them, besides energy, will be the end of a better path. The troops are currently still advancing toward the borders of Alabama, but considering that Florida is our objective, it will take some time until the Georgia border is consolidated with Alabama."

Jason understood those words and didn't have much to suggest. Right now, within Georgia, Atlanta was the active zone of the organization's people, and although there were points in Columbus, Alpharetta, Macon, Albany, and Tifton, Atlanta was the safe zone.

The Georgia border stretched from Jacksonville to Pensacola. The entire line connecting Georgia with Alabama was sealed not with strong walls, but with zones similar to a wall, yet instead of resisting strong impacts, they were meant to prevent walkers from crossing the area.

When a horde of walkers headed toward the borders of the safe zones of S.C.T. territory, what was usually done was to send a helicopter to divert the horde elsewhere.

And how was this achieved? Simple. There were cameras that sent an alert to the forward points, and these themselves were in charge of conducting inspections. If it was a horde of walkers, the military bases where the organization's soldiers were currently operating were notified, and a containment operation was launched.

But now that Alabama was an objective, the border had to be expanded toward Mississippi and Tennessee. As for Louisiana and Florida, they really weren't a problem.

After remaining silent for a moment, Jason took some documents from the desk and said, "Was the squad sent to explore South Carolina?"

Tyler, who was reviewing the activities on the cameras, replied immediately, "Yes. As per suggestions not only from you but also from the other captains, we need to know what's happening in that place…"

"I won't be calm sending a single group. Send a message and tell them to deploy a drone equipped with missiles…" Jason's eyes were restless; he knew that something was telling him that something there was about to explode.

"Jason?"

"Yes?"

"You look very uneasy. Do you think something bad will happen in South Carolina?" Tyler asked as he looked at his friend.

"This is a huge mess. I need to hold a meeting and see if we could also take control of South Carolina…"

"But we're already taking Alabama!"

"I know, but we need to hurry and take in as many people as possible in South Carolina and prepare to make contact with the Commonwealth… We'll discuss that in a meeting, we'll prepare a helicopter…"

Without waiting for Tyler to respond, Jason left the room.

"And once again you leave the base. I hope you soon manage to take other people into account…"

Two and a half hours later.

To head to South Carolina, instead of driving the modified RV, Jason chose to travel in armored vehicles equipped with machine guns, followed by several armored buses with the S.C.T. insignia.

"Zz… Exploration Team, we'll be at your position in about 30 minutes. Report your status, over!"

A total of fifty people, most of them soldiers, were heading toward South Carolina. Taking a special route, the group advanced at great speed, but it was not enough to arrive as quickly as possible.

"Zz… Sir, we're in a building where we're holding the enemy back… But ammunition is low, we won't be able to hold out much longer!"

"Have the attackers pinned you down?"

"Zz… Yes, sir…"

"Very good, soldier. Several military drones are heading toward your area… I just need you to hold on…"

The convoy of three armored military trucks and four Humvees advanced at an impressive speed.

"Keep moving forward, don't stop!"

"Yes, sir!"
