In the Hokage's office, after Shizune carried in a fresh stack of files, she quietly sat down and began sorting them — completely ignoring Kakashi's uneasy presence.
Kakashi Hatake sat in the Hokage's chair, his elbow resting against the armrest as his lone visible eye darted toward Shizune from time to time. No matter how many glances he stole, she didn't even look his way. She was entirely focused on the documents before her.
Kakashi sighed inwardly. What the hell is going on here?
Moving his workspace into the Hokage's office was perfectly reasonable — he was the Sixth Hokage, after all. But why did Shizune insist on staying here, right in the same room? The Hokage's assistant had her own office next door.
Now, with the two of them sharing the same space, things had become awkward beyond words. Kakashi couldn't just ask her to leave; that would sound ridiculous.
As he flipped through the files, Kakashi's gaze fell on one particular document — Jiraiya's wedding plan. His expression shifted slightly.
Right, I was about to bring this up anyway.
"Shizune, come here for a moment," Kakashi called out.
Shizune looked up, her eyes flickering with a hint of nervousness. Truthfully, her act of being "deeply busy" was all a front — just to avoid showing how uneasy she felt around Kakashi in this situation.
Still, she believed if they worked side by side, maybe the awkwardness would fade away. And as expected, Kakashi had finally spoken first.
Taking a quiet breath to steady herself, Shizune stood and approached his desk.
"Hokage-sama, what are your orders?"
Kakashi handed her the wedding plan. "Naruto sent this over last night. I've read through it — nothing seems off. Please review it once more."
"Oh, alright," Shizune replied, accepting the file.
She'd actually gone over the same plan the previous night. She thought Kakashi had something more personal or serious to discuss — but no, he was still talking about work. Typical Kakashi.
Kakashi noticed how she didn't even bother opening the file. He paused but didn't comment.
"Follow Naruto's previous arrangement," he instructed, voice calm but authoritative. "This time, there's no need to assign personnel from the other villages. Everything will proceed under standard Konoha protocol. Prepare the duty schedule accordingly."
He paused briefly before adding, "And about the visiting foreign dignitaries — I'll personally handle their reception. The other Kage will likely attend as well."
When he finished, Kakashi looked up. "Any objections, Shizune?"
But Shizune seemed distracted — her eyes were blank, lost in thought.
"Shizune?" Kakashi leaned forward slightly. "Shizune!"
Startled, she blinked and straightened up. "Ah—what? Sorry, Hokage-sama, what did you say?"
"I asked," Kakashi repeated with a faint smile, "if you had any objections to this arrangement."
Shizune quickly waved her hands. "No, no, this is fine! The plan is perfectly good!"
"Then please go and make the necessary arrangements," Kakashi replied, his tone relaxed.
Shizune gave a short nod, turned on her heel, and walked out, the door clicking shut behind her.
Outside, she stood motionless for a few seconds, staring at the file in her hands. Then, realizing what had just happened, she groaned in frustration.
"Great. Thrown out again. Seriously?"
She stomped her foot in irritation.
At that moment, a young male ninja passing through the corridor noticed her frustration and cautiously approached. "Um, Shizune-sama, is something wrong?"
Already irritated, Shizune snapped, "Mind your own business! Get back to work!"
The poor ninja blinked in confusion and backed away. Why did I even ask? he thought as he slipped away quickly, deciding it was best not to cross the Hokage's assistant when she was in that mood.
With a short, angry huff, Shizune exhaled and narrowed her eyes toward the Hokage's office door.
"Forget it," she muttered. "I'll just finish this up quickly… then I'll come back and face him again."
And with that, she turned and hurried down the hall to complete the task.
Inside the office, Kakashi finally let out a sigh of relief, slumping back in his chair.
He could still sense her presence — the faint trace of her chakra lingering by the door. She'd stood there for quite a while before leaving.
It made him uneasy. What was she thinking?
Then, faintly, he heard the sound of her foot stamping on the floor. Only after her chakra signature faded away completely did Kakashi finally relax.
Finally managed to get her out of here.
He exhaled heavily. "Alright, let's get this finished and get out of here. This atmosphere's too tense."
Leaning forward, Kakashi began writing rapidly, signing off reports and reviewing missions with his usual sharp efficiency.
What Kakashi didn't realize was that Shizune was thinking the exact same thing at that very moment.
As soon as she reached the coordination room, Shizune gathered the planning staff and immediately began issuing orders. Her tone was calm but firm, her years of experience as Tsunade's assistant showing through.
"Divide into teams for each task," she instructed. "Confirm the responsible personnel for every segment — ceremony logistics, security, and hospitality."
Within an hour, the entire framework was ready. Each department knew its duties, and orders were already being carried out across Konoha.
Meanwhile, Kakashi, though efficient, still had moments where he paused mid-report, lost in thought. Despite his brilliance, he was still new to the seat of Hokage.
Shizune, on the other hand, had spent nearly a decade handling every detail under Tsunade. From village budgets to medical supply chains — she had done it all. Her experience was unmatched.
So when she returned, she didn't even bother knocking.
The office door swung open.
Kakashi was buried in paperwork, so focused he didn't even notice her chakra presence until the door shut behind her with a soft click.
"Shizune?" Kakashi looked up, startled. "You're back already?"
Shizune smiled. "Yes, Hokage-sama. I've completed all the tasks you assigned. I came back to take care of the remaining documents."
She returned to her desk, sank into her chair, stretched slightly, and massaged her shoulders. "Ugh, I'm exhausted. My shoulders are killing me."
Kakashi blinked, his mind momentarily blank.
Noticing his look, Shizune tilted her head curiously. "Hokage-sama? Is there something else you wanted to tell me?"
Caught off guard, Kakashi waved his hands quickly. "Ah, no, no! Nothing at all!"
Shizune chuckled softly. "Alright then. I'll start on these reports."
She began sorting through the mountain of documents stacked on the desk, organizing them into neat piles. "There are so many of these. Looks like I'll be busy for quite a while."
She glanced briefly toward Kakashi as she said it, and when their eyes met, he instinctively nodded, flustered.
A faint smile curved on her lips. That was exactly the reaction she was hoping for.
Her unspoken message was clear — she'd be staying here, working beside him for a long while yet.
Kakashi abruptly stood.
Shizune looked up in mild surprise. "Hokage-sama?"
"I, uh… need to go to the bathroom," Kakashi muttered.
Without another word, he quickly opened the office door and stepped out, exhaling deeply once he was in the corridor. The tension that had been quietly building between them left him flushed and disoriented.
"Calm down, Kakashi," he muttered to himself, walking briskly toward the restroom. "You're the Sixth Hokage, not some nervous academy student…"
