Chapter 22 - Mischief Negotiated

Draco – POV

Hearing what I said, the twins finally fell silent. All that anger... gone.

I could see it in their eyes—they didn't want revenge anymore. Maybe they'd realised I wasn't the one responsible.

Mischievous? Sure. But bad? Not really.

George glanced at Fred, who slowly shook his head. Then both of them looked back at me, confused and curious.

I could tell what they were thinking.

For the last two years, I'd been a proper little git. Bragging about my family name. Sneering at anyone without a vault full of Galleons. But the boy standing in front of them now wasn't that Draco Malfoy.

In fact, I'd heard the whispers around school myself.

"Draco Malfoy's changed."

At first, most thought it was some new scheme or trick. But as weeks turned into months, people started thinking otherwise.

Even the professors had noticed. I wasn't the same arrogant boy anymore.

Still, George spoke. His tone was steady but firm. "We still don't want to give you the map."

Fred didn't say anything. He just crossed his arms and nodded in agreement.

I sighed, casually, letting a slow grin tug at my lips. "Looks like you want everyone to find out just how big a pair of perverts the Weasley twins really are."

Fred blinked. "What?"

George frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Oh come on," I said, grinning wider now. "Two of the most notorious pranksters in Hogwarts, holding a magical map that shows where everyone is at all times, including the girls' lavatories. And you expect people to believe you've never used it to sneak a peek?"

"You!" George looked like I'd slapped him.

Fred quickly grabbed his brother's shoulder, trying to calm him down. His own face had gone a bit serious, though.

"We could prove we didn't," Fred said, jaw tight.

"Oh?" I cocked an eyebrow. "What's the plan? Drink a bit of Veritaserum in front of the whole school?" I let out a small chuckle. "And if you don't… well, then you lose the map. And your reputation."

"Even if you get the professors to back you up, who's going to believe them?" I added. "Half the school already thinks you're dodgy."

George snapped. "It'd still be better than handing the map over to you."

"Maybe," I nodded slowly. "You might not care about your reputation. But your family will. Especially your sister."

At that, both twins froze.

"Think about it," I continued, tone lower. "How do you reckon people would treat Ginny, knowing her brothers were caught spying on girls? Even if she had nothing to do with it, people talk. You remember how they treated Potter last year, don't you?"

That hit the mark.

I saw it in their expressions. Their confidence had cracked.

They didn't care about their own image, but Percy would lose his mind. Their mother too. The shame it would bring on the whole family... not worth it.

The two of them exchanged a look.

I couldn't read their minds, but I could guess they were thinking of ways to shut me up.

I spoke before they could open their mouths. "And before you think of trying something, I've got backups. Multiple. So even if something happens to me, others will know."

Their expressions faltered.

"I don't want to keep it forever," I said finally, tone softening just a little. "I'm not asking for it permanently. Just when I need it. After my work's done, I'll give it back."

That seemed to ease them a little.

George gave a short nod, and Fred reached into his pocket, pulling out a folded bit of parchment.

The Marauder's Map.

He handed it over without another word.

I took it, fingers brushing the worn edges, then raised my wand.

"I solemnly swear that I am up to no good," I said clearly.

Ink spread like a web across the page, forming winding corridors, moving dots, and names. My own dot appeared instantly—Draco Malfoy—alongside Fred and George Weasley, right here in this old classroom.

I didn't bother scanning the rest.

With a flick, I tapped it again.

"Mischief managed."

The ink faded away.

I turned to the twins. "You can go."

They didn't argue.

Fred turned to leave, but I noticed George hesitate, his hand reaching into his pocket. Then the two of them exchanged a look.

George stepped forward slightly and held out the pouch of Galleons I'd given them.

Returning the money.

My brow creased. "Keep it," I said firmly. "I don't like owing people."

Fred opened his mouth like he wanted to argue, but thought better of it. With a short nod, he tucked the pouch back into his cloak.

Just as they reached the door, I spoke again, casually, almost like an afterthought. But my voice carried.

"Oh, and one more thing—do tell Ron to keep his distance."

They paused.

"I might not be the same as I used to be, but that doesn't mean I'll ignore his nonsense. If he wants attention, being Potter's shadow should be enough. Don't let him drag me into his outbursts or petty drama. If he does, he'll be the one answering for it."

Neither of them replied.

But the message was clear.

Ask him to stay away from me.
