Kenway Keep - Philadelphia - Pennsylvania - Holy Commonwealth of Pennmere
The sprawling, mahogany-lined office of the Kenway Keep was suffused with the heavy, languid warmth that inevitably follows a sudden, violent storm of passion.
Sunlight filtered through the partially drawn velvet curtains, casting long, geometric shadows over the scattered documents that had been unceremoniously swept onto the floor. Kassandra stood near the edge of the massive desk, her back beautifully arched as she smoothly pulled the laces of her white linen underdress tight. The faint, alluring sheen of sweat still clung to her collarbone, a testament to the vigorous, breathtaking hour they had just spent entirely ignoring the administrative demands of a burgeoning kingdom.
"You know," Kassandra murmured, her voice carrying a husky, deeply satisfied resonance as she reached for her blue overdress, "before we got entirely sidetracked, I meant to tell you that Reuben and Thulani were actually hoping to see you. They've been coordinating the fleet expansions and the frontier patrols, and they wanted a word when you had the time."
She slipped the heavy fabric over her shoulders, her amber eyes flicking toward the man currently lounging on the leather sofa. "You should probably go check on them. A commander shouldn't leave his generals waiting in the dark for too long."
Alaric, who was presently resting his head against the plush cushions while lazily reattaching the buckles of his trousers, raised a single, platinum-blonde brow. He let out a soft, contented hum, considering the logistics of his vast empire for a brief second before offering a slow nod of his head. "Yeah. I guess I can spare a few minutes to see what the boys are up to."
Kassandra finished adjusting her skirt, turning fully to face him. A brilliant, knowing smile touched her lips as she leaned her hip against the edge of the desk, crossing her arms loosely beneath her chest.
"While you're at it, you shouldn't put that old flak jacket back on," she instructed, gesturing vaguely toward the discarded pile of olive-green and blue shinobi gear resting on the floorboard. "William Penn actually dropped by the estate while you were gone and gifted you some clothes. He commissioned a master tailor from the capital to design something fitting for the true architect of the Commonwealth. It's resting on the armchair in your bedroom. You might as well have a look at it."
Alaric's gaze shifted toward the adjoining wall, his curiosity genuinely piqued by the prospect of local, high-end fashion. He offered another firm nod.
Without standing up, without taking a single step toward the ornate mahogany door that seamlessly connected his office directly to the master bedroom, Alaric simply willed the spatial coordinates of his chakra to shift.
FLASH.
The air displaced with a sharp, crackling clap of golden light, leaving the sofa entirely empty. Less than three seconds later, another identical burst of golden luminescence erupted in the exact same spot, depositing Alaric back onto the leather cushions with a heavy bundle of dark fabric draped casually over his arm.
Kassandra stared at him, her lips parting in a mixture of profound amusement and sheer, unadulterated exasperation. She let out a long, incredulous sigh, rubbing the bridge of her nose.
"Agápi mou," Kassandra chided, shaking her head at the sheer absurdity of the action. "The connecting door to your bedroom is literally ten feet away. Why in the world are you being so obscenely lazy?"
Alaric offered a bright, entirely unapologetic grin, his blue eyes dancing with mirth as he stood up to inspect the gifted garments. "I'm not being lazy, dear. I'm just being ruthlessly efficient. Why waste ten seconds walking when I can bend the fabric of reality and do it in two?"
Kassandra could only roll her eyes, unable to formulate a logical counter-argument to a man who treated the laws of physics as mere suggestions. She watched in quiet, appreciative silence as Alaric stripped away the remnants of his shinobi attire and began to don the royal gift.
As the final clasps clicked into place, the atmosphere in the room shifted, conforming to the absolute, tyrannical weight of the new aesthetic.
Alaric was now clad in a highly stylized, profoundly aristocratic military uniform that screamed of lethal authority. The base of the attire was a dark, almost abyssal black, tailored so sharply it seemed to have been sculpted directly onto his massive, heavily muscled frame. It featured a fitted, double-breasted military coat adorned with elaborate gold detailing; two vertical rows of heavy, polished gold buttons tracked down his chest, emphasizing a commanding, fiercely disciplined presence.
Resting upon his broad shoulders were prominent gold epaulettes fringed with thick metallic tassels, universally signaling a rank that answered to no one. Intricate, decorative gold chains draped elegantly across his chest, attaching securely to ornate, stylized clasps that proudly bore the distinct, sharp insignia of the Vanguard. A high, structured collar framed his jawline, paired seamlessly with a dark black cravat that reinforced a noble, impeccably formal style.
Cinched tightly around his waist was a wide black leather belt, locked at the center by a striking, oversized gold buckle cast in the shape of a menacing skull. Rich gold trim lined the sharp cuffs and the severe edges of the coat, maintaining a flawless black-and-gold theme throughout the entire ensemble.
Pinned meticulously over his left breast were several heavy, metallic medals, including jagged, star-shaped badges and one particularly ominous piece featuring a skull motif, suggesting honors earned not in bloodless diplomacy, but in the darkest, most elite theaters of war.
Overall, he was dressed in a manner so overwhelmingly majestic and fearsome that high-ranking colonial commanders and elite European nobles would undoubtedly seethe in breathless, impotent envy upon seeing him.
Alaric walked over to the towering, antique mirror resting in the corner of the office, his heavy boots clicking sharply against the floorboards. He inspected his reflection, tilting his head slightly as he ran a hand over the immaculate gold embroidery.
"Do I really need to wear the medals?" Alaric asked, raising a skeptical brow as he tapped the heavy brass and gold pinned to his chest. "The outfit itself is absolute fire, I'll give Penn that. But the medals make it look like I'm attending a stuffy coronation ceremony instead of managing an intelligence network."
"Wear them if you want," Kassandra replied easily, having finished her own grooming long ago. She stepped up behind him, her gaze trailing appreciatively over the broad, gold-fringed expanse of his shoulders, entirely enamored by the regal, dominant silhouette he cut. "Don't if you don't want to. You are the one who defines the uniform, Alaric, not the other way around."
Alaric could only chuckle at her pragmatic wisdom. With a swift, fluid motion, he detached the heavy medals from the breast of the coat, pulsing a microscopic fraction of spatial chakra to slip them neatly into his invisible storage seal.
"Then let's not wear them," Alaric decided, adjusting his collar one last time. "I prefer my authority to speak for itself. Now... let's go see what kind of trouble our corsair friends have gotten themselves into."
Nassau - Commonwealth of The Bahamas
The stifling, salt-heavy humidity of the Caribbean was a violent contrast to the crisp, autumn winds of Pennmere.
Cutting through the crystalline, turquoise waters of the harbor, The Wraithling dropped its massive iron anchors as near to the sandy shores of Nassau as its deep draft would physically allow. The Vanguard frigate sat on the horizon like a silent, heavily armed leviathan, its dark hull and black sails casting an imposing, lethal shadow over the chaotic, pirate-infested waters.
Since Nassau lacked a proper, deep-water port capable of servicing a vessel of such magnificent tonnage, Reuben stood upon the quarterdeck and effortlessly commanded his men to lower the rowboats.
Watching the wooden skiff hit the gentle waves below, Reuben didn't bother waiting for the rope ladder. The Shadow Raven stepped up onto the polished mahogany railing and simply dropped, plummeting through the humid air to land gracefully in the center of the rocking rowboat with a soft, perfectly balanced thud that barely disturbed the water.
A handful of his elite Vanguard operatives immediately followed suit, dropping silently into the skiff to man the oars. They had decided, entirely on their own volition, to accompany their commander ashore to 'guard' him. Reuben found the gesture profoundly amusing… considering he could likely slaughter half the island before breaking a sweat… but he respected their unyielding loyalty and allowed them to do whatever they pleased.
As the bow of the rowboat finally ground against the pristine, sun-baked sand of the Bahamian shore, the men disembarked.
Their arrival did not go unnoticed. The pristine, militaristic uniformity of the Vanguard operatives… clad in dark, practical armor that starkly defied the sweltering heat… drew a multitude of wary, lingering stares from the ragged, rum-soaked pirates lounging near the docks. However, the silent, disciplined lethality radiating from the Vanguard formation ensured that not a single corsair was foolish enough to utter a challenge. The operatives simply ignored the filthy crowds, falling into a loose, protective diamond formation around Reuben as he marched purposefully toward the heart of the pirate republic.
They navigated the muddy, chaotic clearings of Nassau until they arrived at the "Old Avery Tavern." It was a quintessential pirate establishment… a sprawling, open-air drinking hole where only the bartender's immediate station was sheltered beneath a heavily weathered, thatched roof.
As they approached the rickety wooden stairs leading up to the raised platform, Reuben paused, motioning with two fingers for his men to disperse.
"Take an hour. Grab a drink, stretch your legs, do whatever you want," Reuben ordered smoothly. "Just don't burn the place down."
The operatives nodded crisply, melting away into the periphery of the tavern. Despite the apparent looseness of Reuben's command, it was an entirely safe directive. He, Thulani, and every soldier under their banner had been relentlessly, brutally trained by Alaric into absolute emotional and physical discipline. Getting dragged into pointless, drunken tavern brawls was a rookie mistake that no Vanguard shadow would ever commit; it was simply common sense.
Leaving his men to their leisure, Reuben ascended the creaking wooden stairs alone, his dark eyes instantly locking onto his target.
Seated around a sticky, rum-stained table near the edge of the tavern were three prominent captains of the sea. Edward Kenway was seated there, deeply engrossed in a boisterous conversation with the towering, terrifying bulk of Edward "Blackbeard" Thatch and the calculating, seasoned veteran, Benjamin Hornigold.
"I be tellin' ya, matey… they're busier than a ship caught in a squall these days!" Edward Thatch bellowed, slamming a heavy, sloshing mug of dark rum onto the wood, his iconic, smoke-wreathed beard bristling with aggravation.
"Aye, Kidd be tied up with his mysterious, shadowy dealings... what they be, no living soul can say," Benjamin Hornigold followed, leaning back in his chair with a cynical scoff. "And Vane? Hah, don't be gettin' me started on that mad scallywag... he be everywhere at once, sweeping through the islands like a cursed, unpredictable wind."
Edward Kenway let out a long, commiserating sigh, shaking his blonde head in shared frustration. He raised his own wooden mug of ale, tipping it back to drain the last dregs of the bitter brew. As he lowered the cup to wipe the foam from his mouth, his sharp blue eyes flicked past his companions, widening slightly as he noticed the dark-coated commander approaching their table.
"Oh, Reuben!" Edward called out, his rugged face breaking into a welcoming, familiar grin.
Thatch and Hornigold immediately halted their grumbling, whipping their heads toward the direction Edward was looking. The moment their eyes registered the unmistakable, lethal silhouette of the Shadow Raven striding casually across the tavern floor, their respective reactions were a study in profound shock.
Thatch literally choked on his rum, a violent, hacking cough racking his massive chest as a spray of dark liquor spattered across the table.
Reuben's appearance here was entirely, terrifyingly out of nowhere. When Edward Kenway had arrived in Nassau earlier that day, the legendary pirate captains had indeed spotted the mythic, black-sailed leviathan known as The Wraithling anchored offshore. But they had watched with their own eyes as the terrifying frigate had deployed a rowboat for Edward and his wife, and then promptly raised its sails, turning its bow back toward the open ocean. Now, the undisputed captain of that very ship was standing not ten feet away from them.
"I'm assuming we're ready to go? I don't see Caroline anywhere around here," Reuben asked, stopping at the edge of their table. He addressed Edward before offering a polite, shallow nod toward the coughing giant and the stunned veteran. "Good morning, gentlemen."
"Well, well," Hornigold recovered his wits first, a guarded, calculating grin stretching across his weathered face as he looked Reuben up and down, taking in the dark, immaculate combat gear. "What be a high-ranking Pennmerian officer like ye doin' here in the mud of Nassau, savvy? Thought ye'd already sailed off, I did... I was quite keen to parley with the infamous captain o' The Wraithling!"
Reuben raised a dark brow, a low, genuinely amused chuckle escaping his lips as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"I was just doing my scheduled patrol rounds down to Barbados," Reuben clarified easily, shaking his head. "And for the record, I'm not a Pennmerian officer, Hornigold. Not even close. I operate strictly under the Vanguard, not the Commonwealth."
"Oh? Ye know o' me by name, do ye? Now that be a true surprise... the legendary Shadow Raven keeping tabs on the likes o' us simple sailors!" Hornigold's brows rose in genuine intrigue, though his eyes sharpened at the political distinction. "And what ye said at the end there be mighty surprisin' as well..."
While Hornigold actively conversed with the lethal commander, Edward Thatch remained entirely, uncharacteristically silent.
Of course he was. Every pirate worth his salt knew exactly what the Shadow Raven was, and more importantly, they knew what the Vanguard represented. Even when Edward Kenway had sat down with him and Hornigold a couple of hours ago, offering them a highly lucrative privateering contract paid in solid gold, Edward had explicitly told them who actually owned and operated the Vanguard.
It was the very same platinum-blonde monster who had terrified the absolute shit out of Thatch years ago. The man who had casually, effortlessly murdered an unruly crew member with a single, physics-defying backhanded slap that had shattered the man's jaw. That horrifying memory was burned permanently into Blackbeard's psyche, which was exactly why the loudest man in the Caribbean was currently sitting as quiet as a mouse.
"Well... we only accept the direct, explicit orders of our boss," Reuben explained briefly, his tone carrying an absolute, unshakeable loyalty that made the surrounding pirates inherently nervous. "That means even if His Majesty, William Penn Sr., tells us directly to move his armies, we won't budge an inch... unless my higher-ups say so."
"Oh, be that so?" Hornigold nodded his head in profound, quiet understanding. It was a terrifyingly bold statement to openly declare that a military force would not answer to the King of the very kingdom they resided within. His calculating mind immediately recognized the staggering implications of such autonomy. "Can ye humor me a simple question, then? Just how deep be the hidden coffers o' this mysterious boss o' yours, to be privately backin' such fearsome, world-renowned captains as Il Corvo d'Ombra and the Giant Ebony, eh?"
"..." Reuben's brow rose slowly, his dark eyes locking onto Hornigold's face.
He didn't need the heightened sensory abilities of chakra to read the room; he could clearly see the naked, ravenous hunger for unimaginable wealth gleaming in the veteran captain's eyes, and he noticed that even the terrified Thatch was leaning forward, desperately curious about the answer.
"Hmmm..." Reuben stalled playfully, uncrossing his arms.
"Very deep."
The sudden, deeply resonant voice didn't come from Reuben.
Everyone at the table widened their eyes in absolute shock as the smooth, aristocratic baritone cut effortlessly through the ambient noise of the tavern. They whipped their heads simultaneously toward the rickety wooden railings overlooking the street.
Standing there, bathed in the harsh Caribbean sunlight, was a towering, platinum-blonde man. He was dressed in a pristine, breathtakingly regal black-and-gold military uniform that screamed of absolute, untouchable supremacy.
A thick ribbon of fragrant, grey smoke trailed lazily from the premium cigar clamped between his lips. Alaric Jonathan Kenway rested his hands casually on the rusted railing, a dark, infinitely arrogant smirk curving his features as he looked down at the table of legends.
"It's been a while, Blackbeard... Hornigold."
