Chapter 341 - Chapter 340: The Serpent’s Legacy and the Price of Kings

Ryūchi Cave - Deep Underground

Deep within the ancient, oppressive gloom of Ryūchi Cave, the air hung thick with the suffocating scent of damp stone and a faint, metallic miasma of raw chakra. It was a subterranean labyrinth untouched by the sun, a place where the primal forces of the earth coiled and twisted in the dark.

Kneeling alone on the cold, moisture-slicked floor was a man stripped of his former identity.

The massive limestone pillars surrounding him, carved by forgotten hands into the likeness of colossal, coiled serpents, loomed overhead. Their hollow, shadowed eyes seemed to stare down at the lone figure, watching in silent, ancient judgment. A flickering, sickly green luminescence pulsed erratically from unseen veins of natural energy running through the rock, casting long, shifting shadows across his pale, angular features.

His silver hair fell in disheveled, sweat-dampened strands over the cracked lenses of his signature round glasses. The calculated, infuriatingly calm composure that had always defined Kabuto Yakushi had completely fractured. In its place was something raw, feral, and feverish… a desperate void left behind by the execution of his master.

Kabuto held a small, reinforced glass vial in trembling fingers. Its contents were dark and viscous, a foul liquid swirling with pale, microscopic flecks of organic matter… the final, salvaged remains of his master, Orochimaru.

With a slow, agonizingly deliberate motion, Kabuto unstoppered the cork. He didn't hesitate to consider the biological heresy he was about to commit. He tipped his head back and pressed the glass to his pale lips, swallowing the bitter, concentrated essence in one desperate gulp.

The reaction was instantaneous and violently unforgiving.

His body convulsed, his spine arching backward at an unnatural angle as the foreign DNA aggressively invaded his cellular structure. Thick, dark veins bulged grotesquely beneath his pale skin, throbbing as the unnatural, serpentine chakra surged through his pathways, fighting a brutal war to integrate with his own life force. He clutched desperately at his chest, his fingers digging into the fabric of his cloak as his teeth ground together so hard they threatened to crack.

A low, rattling hiss escaped from between his clenched jaws… a sound that was no longer quite human, yet not entirely snake. It was the birth cry of a monster.

From the absolute darkness beyond the cavern's central altar, an enormous, coiled form stirred.

The White Snake Sage, a creature of mythic proportions wrapped in ancient coils of pale scales, shifted her massive head. Her single, visible yellow eye narrowed, observing the agonizing metamorphosis playing out on her temple floor with a cold, detached curiosity. A thin, continuous trail of grey smoke curled lazily from the ornate pipe clenched firmly in her jaws, her silence acting as a tacit approval of the boy's dark ambition.

Unable to bear the agonizing pressure, the white-haired man collapsed forward onto his hands and knees. His breathing was ragged, wet, and labored, echoing harshly against the stone.

Slowly, dark, jagged markings began to manifest around his eyes, creeping across his face like spreading cracks in porcelain as the Senjutsu of the cave forcibly harmonized with his master's parasitic cells. He blinked, pushing his cracked glasses up the bridge of his nose, and when he opened his eyes again, the human irises were gone. His pupils had sharpened into distinct, predatory slits of gold.

Power… raw, unadulterated, and intoxicatingly serpentine… flooded his newly forged senses. The surging tide of natural energy and borrowed genetics drowned out the hollow, agonizing ache left by his master's absence, replacing his grief with an overwhelming, terrifying clarity.

He had not just consumed Orochimaru; he had become the vessel for his evolution.

Kabuto lifted his head slowly toward the dripping ceiling, the green light catching the slick sheen of sweat on his face. For the first time in days, the corner of his mouth twitched, curving upward until a faint, crooked, and utterly sinister smile touched his lips.

The Fire Capital

Miles above the subterranean darkness, bathed in the warm, golden light of the late afternoon sun, the ruler of the Fire Country was fighting a battle of a decidedly different nature.

Kyū Madoka sat entombed within the gilded cage of his private study, profoundly and inescapably bored. He held a fine calligraphy brush loosely between his aged fingers, the tip hovering precariously over a sheet of pristine parchment, yet no ink had touched the paper for nearly an hour. Instead, the Daimyo was simply staring out the massive, arched window that overlooked the sprawling, vibrant expanse of his capital city.

From his high vantage point, the city looked like an intricate, well-oiled machine, but Kyū knew exactly how much grease and blood it took to keep the gears turning.

'I have far too much politics to think of,' Kyū sighed internally, his shoulders slumping under the invisible, crushing weight of the crown. He carefully set the calligraphy brush down onto its porcelain rest, shaking his head slowly. 'And now there is a perpetrator actively sabotaging the famine relief... stealing from the very mouths of my dying people. This position is going to be the absolute death of me.'

He continued staring blankly at the window, his mind tracing the exhausting logistics of a royal audit, when the atmosphere directly outside the glass violently fractured.

Kyū raised a silver brow, leaning forward slightly as the very air in the center of his vision began to distort, spinning inward like a localized vortex pulling light and space into a central, spiraling point.

For a fleeting second, genuine panic gripped the aging ruler. His hand twitched toward the hidden bell that would summon his elite samurai guard, but before he could raise the alarm, the vortex spat out a familiar, towering figure.

Alaric Jonathan Kenway stepped smoothly through the spatial tear, landing on the carpeted floor of the study without making a single sound.

"A-Alaric!" Kyū exclaimed, the tension instantly draining from his spine as he scrambled to his feet. He walked around his heavy desk, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and sudden hope. "You returned so swiftly! Do you have any leads on the missing funds?"

Alaric looked at the flustered Daimyo, a low, easy chuckle vibrating in his chest as he gave a firm nod of his head. "More than just leads, Kyū."

Without waiting for permission, Alaric casually unrolled the right sleeve of his flak jacket. With a brief, focused pulse of his chakra, a cloud of white smoke puffed from the intricate sealing tattoo on his forearm. He reached into the fading vapor and withdrew a thick bundle of heavy, wax-sealed scrolls.

Walking with unhurried confidence, Alaric approached the Daimyo's desk and dropped the damning evidence onto the polished mahogany with a heavy thud.

"I tracked the mercenary crew responsible for raiding your provincial warehouses," Alaric explained briefly, reaching into his pocket to retrieve his cigar. He snapped his fingers to light it, settling comfortably into the plush guest chair opposite the desk. "It didn't take much persuasion to get their leader to sing. The one who caused the billions of Ryo worth of relief goods to simply vanish into thin air... is a man named Amakura Genbei."

Kyū's eyes widened drastically, the color draining from his face as the name registered. He practically lunged across the desk, snatching the scrolls with trembling hands.

As the Daimyo hastily broke the seals and unfurled the parchments, his eyes darting frantically across the encoded ledgers and the stamped insignias of Iwagakure, the horrific reality of the betrayal settled in.

Alaric took a slow drag from his cigar, silently watching the storm brew on the older man's face.

The silence stretched for a couple of agonized minutes. Finally, Kyū slammed the last scroll down onto the desk, his hands balling into fists so tight his knuckles cracked. The weary, bored ruler vanished, replaced entirely by the furious, commanding presence of a betrayed sovereign.

"This little...!" Kyū spat, his voice trembling with a wrath so profound it shook his frame. He shoved his chair back and began to pace erratically across the room, unable to contain the explosive surge of adrenaline.

Alaric didn't share the same emotional outrage, operating with the clinical detachment of a man who viewed politics as an elaborate game of chess, but he completely understood the depth of Kyū's fury.

The Amakura family was not just a collection of wealthy merchants; they had been the most foundational, reliable backers of the Daimyo's reign. Amakura Genbyo, the late patriarch, had been one of Kyū's oldest and closest confidants. To discover that his successor, Genbei, was doing this behind the Daimyo's back… actively colluding with a hostile foreign power like Iwagakure while starving his own countrymen… was the ultimate heresy. It wasn't merely a case of egregious corruption; it was high treason, a blatant betrayal against the crown itself.

"You need any help dealing with him?" Alaric asked, his voice cutting smoothly through the Daimyo's frantic pacing. He exhaled a cloud of smoke, watching the king with predatory calm. "I could dismantle the Amakura family and whoever is actively colluding with them before the sun sets. I mean, considering Iwagakure is on the target list in those ledgers, this constitutes an act of war against Konoha's interests as well. I'd be well within my rights to erase them."

The Daimyo stopped dead in his tracks, his robes swirling around his ankles as he turned to face the blonde Jonin.

He stared at Alaric for a long, heavy moment. He knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that the man sitting in his office could obliterate the entire Amakura estate and every mercenary on their payroll without leaving a single trace. It was a tempting offer… a swift, brutal eradication of the cancer eating at his kingdom.

But Kyū slowly, definitively shook his head.

"No," Kyū declared, his voice dropping into the cold, authoritative register of a true ruler. "I will handle the Fire Capital's internal politics. This is a matter of state, and justice must be seen to be executed by the crown, not by an invisible assassin in the night. Besides... that is entirely too much to ask of you, Alaric-san. I already owe you far too many favors as it stands."

"Yep," Alaric agreed readily, a sharp smirk touching his lips as he held up four fingers. "Four favors, to be exact. Since I basically fixed the famine plaguing your western provinces on my way back. I infused the dead soil with enough vitality that you guys won't have to worry about food or blighted crops in those regions for the next few generations."

Kyū's eyes widened to an impossible degree, his jaw actually dropping slightly as he absorbed the magnitude of the statement. He couldn't believe it. Reversing a systemic, multi-provincial ecological disaster in the span of a single afternoon defied the very laws of nature.

However, as much as his logical mind screamed that it was impossible, Alaric was a shinobi… and not just any shinobi. He was the anomaly who had dropped from the sky forty years ago, who still looked exactly as he had on that fateful day. Shinobi of his caliber routinely spat in the face of the impossible. If Alaric said the famine was cured, then the famine was dead.

"Alright," the Daimyo exhaled, a long, profound sigh of relief washing away the lingering exhaustion of the past year. He walked back to his desk, leaning heavily against the wood as a genuine, deeply grateful smile broke across his face.

He looked at the man who had just saved his kingdom from internal collapse.

"What is it you want, Alaric?" Kyū asked, his tone radiating absolute sincerity and absolute authority. "Land? Wealth? Titles?"

Kyū waved a hand dismissively toward the scrolls piled on his desk. "And of course, it goes without saying, the thirty percent fund reduction for Konoha is already permanently annulled. Whatever else you desire, so long as it falls within the boundaries of my power, I will grant it to you here and now."

Alaric looked at the aging Daimyo, the ember of his cigar glowing softly as he tapped his fingers against the armrest of his chair in thought. The silence stretched for a few comfortable seconds as the blonde anomaly weighed his vast options, contemplating the exact shape of the empire he wished to build in this world.

Slowly, his smirk widened into a brilliant, visionary smile.

"Then..."
