---Previously---
Alaric wiped blood from his mouth with the back of his hand. He smiled… small, genuine. "You've improved, Haku."
Haku didn't answer. He simply raised his sword again.
'I've improved, but it's not enough!'
---Now---
Six hours had passed and the forest was dying.
Entire sections had collapsed into frozen rubble, the once-impenetrable canopy now ragged holes letting moonlight pour through like spilled mercury. Trees lay like felled giants, trunks split wide open, branches crystallized mid-snap and glittering under the silver glow. The ground had become a shattered mosaic... jagged plates of ice interlocking with churned mud, black scorch marks from deflected chakra blasts, and craters deep enough to swallow a man whole.
Haku unleashed his full arsenal without reservation.
But now Alaric joined him… not in restraint, but in measured escalation. He wanted to see it: how Haku would adapt when the pressure flipped, when the mentor became the aggressor.
No killing blows, no S-rank devastation that could end villages. Just A-class ninjutsu, spammed in relentless chains, each one formed with a single, effortless hand seal. Alaric's chakra flared subtly, his Eternal Mangekyō spinning once as he tested the waters… not his own limits, but Haku's ability to swim in them.
It started with wood.
Alaric's right hand flashed the Tiger seal… once, quick as a blink. "Wood Release: Great Forest Technique."
Vines erupted from the frozen earth around Haku, twisting upward like living serpents, thick as thighs and barbed with thorns. They lashed out in a coordinated swarm, aiming to ensnare and crush. The wood groaned as it grew, splintering ice sheets in its path, the air filling with the crackle of rapid expansion.
Haku didn't flinch. His own hand blurred through minimal one-handed seals, precise. "Ice Release: Ice Rock Dome of Magnificent Nothingness."
A translucent igloo of reinforced ice snapped into existence around him, thicker than the usual, its surface shimmering with infused water chakra for added density. The vines slammed against it… crack, crack, crack… thorny tips shattering on impact, wood splintering into harmless shards. But the dome held, barely spiderwebbing under the assault.
Alaric didn't let up. His left hand formed the Ox seal in a casual flick. "Wind Release: Vacuum Blade."
Chakra condensed in his palm, shaping into a razor-thin sword of compressed air, extending three meters long. He swung it once… effortless, like swatting a fly… and the blade cleaved through the air with a high-pitched whine, slicing toward Haku's dome at an angle meant to bisect it clean.
Haku burst out from the top of the dome just in time, Zero Friction propelling him skyward in a frictionless arc. As he flipped mid-air, his fingers wove a single seal. "Water Style: Shark Bomb — Ice Infusion!"
A massive shark of swirling water and jagged ice coalesced below him, jaws gaping wide. It rocketed toward Alaric, freezing the air in its wake, the ground beneath it turning to slick frost as it charged.
Alaric sidestepped with minimal movement, his right hand flashing the Snake seal. "Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique."
A colossal dragon of roiling water burst from thin air… summoned from ambient moisture… coiling upward with a roar that shook leaves from distant trees. It collided head-on with Haku's shark, the two aquatic beasts exploding in a maelstrom of spray and ice shards. The blast radius froze a twenty-meter circle solid, turning mud to permafrost.
Haku landed lightly on the new ice, sliding into another burst. He countered immediately, one hand sealing. "Ice Release: Ice Ball!"
A sphere of dense ice the size of a boulder formed overhead, compressing inward until it glowed with internal pressure. He hurled it forward… propelled by wind chakra for extra speed… aiming for Alaric's chest. It whistled through the air, trailing frost vapor.
Alaric met it head-on, his fingers snapping the Boar seal. "Wood Release: Wood Locking Wall."
A curved barrier of interlocking wooden pillars shot up from the ground, reinforced with earth chakra for durability. The Ice Ball smashed into it with a thunderous boom, splintering the outer layer but failing to penetrate. Wood groaned and cracked, but held—barely.
The exchange accelerated. Alaric pressed, his chakra output steady, testing Haku's reserves and reactions. Tiger seal again. "Wind Release: Great Breakthrough."
A gale-force wind exploded outward from his position, uprooting frozen debris and hurling it toward Haku like shrapnel. Trees bent, ice sheets lifted and shattered mid-air.
Haku weaved through the storm with Zero Friction bursts, his body a blur. One-handed Ram seal. "Ice Release: Ice Senbon."
A barrage of hundreds of ice needles launched from his sleeves, faster and sharper than steel, arcing through the wind to home in on Alaric. They pierced the gale, some deflecting off residual chakra but others grazing close.
Alaric twisted, taking a shallow cut across his bicep. Blood welled. He retaliated without pause… Ox seal. "Water Release: Exploding Water Colliding Wave."
A massive wave surged from beneath his feet, crashing forward like a tidal breaker, infused with enough force to drown and pulverize. It swept across the battlefield, freezing partially on contact with Haku's lingering ice but still powerful enough to uproot stumps.
Haku leaped high, sealing mid-jump. "Ice Release: Ice Hammer ."
An enormous hammer of ice materialized in the air—handle as long as a tree trunk, head the size of Shukaku's fist. He swung it downward with chakra-enhanced force, the impact aimed to meet the wave and shatter it. The hammer collided with the water, exploding the wave into harmless mist and rain, but the recoil sent Haku skidding back ten meters.
Alaric was already moving. Snake seal. "Wood Release: Advent of a World of Flowering Trees."
Pollen-laden vines bloomed rapidly across a wide area, not the full S-rank version but a contained A-class variant… enough to fill the air with chakra-suppressing spores, slowing reactions and inducing drowsiness.
Haku felt the pull immediately, his movements fractionally heavier. He countered with a burst of wind chakra around himself, sealing one-handed. "Wind Style: Wind Infusion."
His Kusanagi hummed to life, edge vibrating with molecular-cutting wind. He slashed in wide arcs, dispersing the pollen clouds and carving through the nearest vines. The blade sang as it cut, wood fibers parting like butter.
They spammed continued relentlessly… jutsu after jutsu chaining in a deadly rhythm. Alaric's single seals flashed like afterimages: Wind Vacuum Serial Waves to batter Haku from multiple angles; Water Severing Wave to slice through ice constructs; Wood Spikes to impale from below. Each one A-class, each one designed to probe, to force adaptation without overwhelming.
Haku fired back with equal fervor, his techniques strong but grounded… never crossing into forbidden S-rank territory. Ice Rain in focused hypersonic cones to pin Alaric down; Mirror Step to reflect a Wind Dragon back, tearing muscle across Alaric's left shoulder to the bone; Ice Fang infused into his blade for close-quarters stabs that nearly froze limbs solid.
Blood sprayed freely now… from both. Alaric's shirt clung wetly to his torso, cuts accumulating, breath coming in calmly. His movements remained calm, focused, evaluative. He was testing limits… not just Haku's, but his own restraint, ensuring the boy grew from the pressure without breaking.
By hour seven, the forest floor was unrecognizable… a warzone of splintered wood, frozen waves, and wind-scoured craters. The sky above turned pale gray with approaching dawn, the moon fading.
Haku stood at the center of his masterpiece, chest heaving but eyes sharp.
Mirrors rose in a perfect, multi-layered sphere… fifty feet in diameter, rotating slowly. Wind howled inside the dome, compressed into invisible blades. Water chakra reinforced every seam. Subtle fuinjutsu sigils glowed along the edges… Haku's own work, refined over two years, designed for one purpose: containment and execution.
He raised his Kusanagi high.
"This technique…" His voice was quiet, almost reverent. "…I created this for you, Sensei."
The mirrors locked.
"Absolute Zero Domain: Heavenly Severance."
The world inside the sphere ceased to forgive movement. Air froze solid. Reflection became law. Wind-infused cutting pressure saturated every possible vector… escape was impossible, and dodging was meaningless. The entire domain collapsed inward like a dying star, converging on Alaric's exact position with mathematical inevitability.
For one perfect heartbeat… Haku believed. He believed he had done it.
The mirrors detonated in a blinding cascade of light and sound. Ice evaporated in a shockwave that flattened everything for three hundred meters.
KAASHHHHHH!
(I don't know if that's how broken glass sounds)
Silence.
Then... Alaric stood beside a single remaining tree at the edge of the devastation. His coat was gone... reduced to scraps hanging from his shoulders. Blood soaked his shirt, pants, hair. Shallow cuts covered most exposed skin. His left arm hung limp, muscle torn. Breath came in shallow, controlled pulls. But he stood. The figure at the center of the domain dissolved into mist and shadow... a Substitution Jutsu executed so perfectly even Haku's senses hadn't caught the switch.
Haku's knees buckled. Kusanagi stabbed into the earth to keep him upright. Chest heaved. Eyes wide.
"…How…?"
Alaric pushed off the tree. He walked slowly… until he stood before his student.
Haku remained on one knee, Kusanagi still planted deep in the cracked, frost-rimed earth to keep himself upright. His chest rose and fell in heavy, controlled pulls. Sweat and blood had frozen into thin crystalline patterns along his jaw and temple. His long black hair hung in damp strands across his face, partially obscuring eyes that refused to look away from the man standing before him.
Alaric crouched slowly… his torn muscles protesting, blood still dripping steadily from the gash across his left pectoral… until their gazes were level.
"That," he said quietly, voice rough from eight hours of sustained combat, "was close."
Haku swallowed once. The silence stretched, broken only by the distant creak of collapsing frozen branches and the soft patter of melting ice turning to water.
"…Is it impossible?" Haku asked, voice low and hoarse. "To reach your level?"
'Maybe?' Alaric shook his head once.
"No."
He glanced at the apocalyptic clearing around them… the frozen graveyard that used to be Training Ground 44. Trees lay like toppled titans, trunks split and crystallized mid-fall. Craters steamed where ice and wind had collided with earth. The air itself smelled of ozone, frost, and copper.
"You've reached a height millions of shinobi would slaughter their own clans to stand on," Alaric continued. "You could kill Tsunade in open combat. Mei Terumi would fall inside three exchanges. Jinchūriki… most of them… wouldn't survive five minutes against what you just showed me. Elite Kage would hesitate to accept a mission against you."
He met Haku's gaze again.
"You touched me. You made me bleed. You forced me to treat you as a genuine threat. That is not small."
Haku's fingers tightened around the hilt of his sword. For a long moment he said nothing. Then, very quietly:
"Sensei… how much would I fare against you if you went all out?"
Alaric exhaled through his nose… a sound that was almost a laugh, but too tired to fully form.
He looked away for the first time, toward the pale gray line of dawn creeping over the shattered horizon.
"Well… honestly?" He paused, letting the question hang between them like smoke. "If I started spamming jutsus on you… full power, no restraint, no holding back for old times' sake… I don't know…"
His eyes returned to Haku's.
"…you would've died instantly."
The words landed flat. No cruelty in them. No gloating. Just fact… delivered the same way one might state the weather or the time of day.
Haku didn't flinch. He didn't look down. He simply nodded once, very slowly, as though slotting the truth into place beside everything else he had learned tonight.
Alaric placed a bloodied hand on Haku's shoulder… firm, warm despite the cold that still clung to both of them.
"But that's not the point," he said. "The point is you're no longer asking whether you can survive against people like me. You're asking how far the distance really is. That question alone means you've already climbed farther than almost anyone alive."
He stood, offering his other hand.
Haku took it without hesitation.
Alaric pulled him to his feet… steady despite his own injuries.
"If you want more… if you truly want to close that distance… then don't be satisfied here. Use this as the floor, not the ceiling."
Haku closed his eyes for a single breath. A thin line of blood-mixed tear traced down his cheek and froze halfway before melting again.
He opened his eyes.
"I understand."
Alaric gave a small, genuine smile... the first one that reached his eyes since they'd stepped into the clearing eight hours earlier.
"Good."
They stood together amid the ruins as true dawn broke, painting the devastation in soft gold and rose. The forest was silent once more… save for the faint drip of thawing ice.
They both walked out of the forest, with Haku offering a silent prayer of forgiveness for destroying it.
Alaric, on the other hand, just walked out without a care. Not using "Eros" to heal himself, and just let his passive regeneration put his body back to peak after a few seconds.
The lesson was over.
For now.
