Chapter 73 - Stock Pantry Checked

October 8, 2023 – 1:42 PM

Lin had just finished signing off on another delivery invoice when she heard boots crunching across the gravel.

She looked up.

General Fang was walking toward her from the direction of the farmhouse.

His usual calm expression hadn't changed.

But there was the faintest hint of satisfaction in his eyes.

He stopped a few feet away.

"Have a few minutes?"

Lin slipped her clipboard under one arm.

"Always."

He nodded once.

"I want to show you something."

They crossed the courtyard together before heading into the main hotel building.

Most of the workers were outside, leaving the lobby surprisingly quiet.

Fresh drywall covered the walls.

Extension cords snaked across the floor.

The smell of fresh paint lingered in the air.

General Fang didn't stop.

Instead, he headed toward the main staircase.

Lin followed.

They climbed to the second floor.

Then continued to the third.

The higher they went, the quieter the building became.

Construction noises faded beneath them.

At the end of the hallway sat what had once been nothing more than a narrow storage closet.

General Fang unlocked the new steel door.

"Go ahead."

Lin stepped inside.

She stopped immediately.

The tiny closet was gone.

In its place was a compact security room.

One entire wall had been rebuilt into reinforced shelving holding networking equipment.

Battery backups.

A dedicated server.

Cable management so neat it almost looked decorative.

The opposite wall held three large monitors.

Each screen displayed a grid of camera feeds.

Driveway.

Front gate.

Equipment barn.

Parking lot.

Cabins.

Walking trails.

Livestock pens.

Hotel entrances.

Warehouse.

Every angle.

Every blind spot she'd worried about over the past month...

Gone.

Lin slowly stepped closer.

"...How many?"

General Fang answered without looking at the screens.

"Fifty-nine."

She turned.

"Fifty-nine?"

He nodded.

"Exterior only."

"Interior cameras will be installed after construction finishes."

Lin looked back at the monitors.

She recognized almost every location.

The main entrance.

The emergency gate.

The pond.

The orchard.

The fuel storage area.

Even the narrow maintenance road behind the equipment shed.

She smiled.

"You covered everything."

General Fang quietly corrected her.

"Almost."

He walked to one corner of the room and pointed upward.

A small dome camera overlooked the security room itself. It was extra security.

"Now..."

He looked at her.

"...everything."

Lin laughed.

"Even us?"

"Especially us."

She stepped toward the front window.

Only now did she realize why he'd chosen this room.

The old storage closet sat on the highest corner of the hotel.

The window overlooked nearly the entire property.

The front entrance.

The parking lot.

The main access road.

Beyond that...

The county road stretching across open farmland.

From here...

She could see vehicles long before they reached the gate.

General Fang joined her beside the window.

"Measured it yesterday."

He pointed toward the road.

"Average visibility; just under two kilometers."

Lin rested one hand on the windowsill.

A delivery truck appeared in the distance.

Tiny.

Almost insignificant.

Even so.

She could already identify it as a box truck.

Several minutes before it would actually arrive.

"Plenty of warning."

General Fang nodded.

"Exactly."

He pointed toward a folded tripod leaning against the wall.

Next to it sat a high-powered spotting scope.

Beside that...

A pair of military-grade binoculars.

Lin raised an eyebrow.

"You kept some toys."

The corner of his mouth twitched.

Almost a smile.

"Retirement benefits."

She laughed.

General Fang walked over to one of the monitors.

He pressed a few keys.

One camera feed expanded to full screen.

The front gate.

Crystal clear.

Another key.

The image zoomed smoothly focusing in on the details.

Lin could read the lettering on a contractor's pickup parked nearly three hundred meters away.

She looked impressed.

"Optical zoom?"

"Thirty-two times."

Another camera.

The livestock barn.

Then the fuel storage.

Then the western fence.

Everything changed instantly.

No lag.

No delay.

He switched back to the full display.

Fifty-nine separate images filled the screens.

Lin slowly turned in a circle.

The room was small.

Functional.

Nothing luxurious.

A sturdy desk.

Two comfortable office chairs.

A filing cabinet.

Maps of the property pinned neatly to one wall. It was organized with military precision.

Emergency radio.

Backup power controls.

Printed camera layout.

It wasn't a closet anymore.

It was a command post.

She looked at General Fang.

"How long have you been planning this?"

He answered honestly.

"The day you let me stay."

Lin smiled.

"You never mentioned it."

"Wanted to finish before showing you."

She looked around once more.

Everything had a purpose.

Nothing unnecessary.

Exactly the way she liked it.

She walked back to the window.

Outside...

Workers continued roofing the east wing.

Guests would someday see a charming country resort.

Families would admire the view from the walking trails.

Children would feed goats and rabbits.

Almost no one would ever notice the reinforced steel door hidden at the end of the third-floor hallway.

Or the quiet room behind it.

Watching over everything.

Lin folded her arms.

"This might be my favorite room in the whole building."

General Fang looked out over the property.

"Good."

Then General Fang reached into his jacket pocket and produced two identical brass keys.

Simple.

Unmarked.

He held them in the palm of his hand.

"The security room."

Lin picked up one of the keys, turning it over between her fingers.

Solid brass.

Heavy.

No markings.

No number.

Just a plain key that gave away nothing.

She looked up.

"Only two?"

General Fang nodded.

"Only two."

He slipped the second key back into his pocket.

"One stays with you."

"One stays with me."

Lin smiled.

"No spare?"

"Not for this room."

She understood immediately.

The fewer people who knew about it.

The better.

She slid the key into the small zippered pocket inside her jacket.

It fit perfectly.

"If something happens to either of us?"

General Fang answered without hesitation.

"Then the other still has access."

Lin nodded.

That was enough.

No further explanation was needed.

She looked around the room one last time.

The camera feeds quietly cycled across the monitors.

Outside, a contractor's pickup turned through the front gate.

She watched it appear on one screen.

Then another; until it finally rolled into the parking lot below.

Exactly as planned.

Satisfied, she followed General Fang back into the hallway.

He locked the steel door behind them.

The key disappeared into his pocket once more.

As they descended the stairs, construction noise gradually returned.

Hammering.

Voices.

The buzz of power tools.

Normal life.

By the time they reached the lobby, General Fang headed toward the equipment barn.

Lin glanced at her watch.

Just after two.

Mom should be with the Whitmores by now.

She crossed the courtyard toward the veterinary barn.

The large sliding door stood open.

Inside, Helen was gently running her hands down the front leg of a young chestnut pony while Daniel Whitmore held the lead rope.

Sarah Whitmore stood nearby with an anxious expression.

The pony flicked one ear toward Lin as she stepped inside.

Helen looked up briefly.

"Perfect timing."

Lin smiled.

"Need another pair of hands?"

Helen nodded toward the examination table.

"Would you grab my portable ultrasound?"

"Right beside the medicine cabinet."

Lin immediately crossed the room.

She already knew where everything was.

The machine was plugged in and ready to go.

She wheeled it over beside Helen.

"Anything serious?"

Helen continued examining the pony's leg.

"I'm hoping it's only a tendon strain."

Daniel gently stroked the pony's neck.

"He came up lame yesterday after training."

Sarah sighed.

"We've got three shows coming up this month."

Helen looked up with a reassuring smile.

"Let's find out what's wrong before we worry about competitions."

Lin handed her the ultrasound probe.

Then quietly stepped to the pony's shoulder.

She rested one hand against its neck.

The little horse relaxed almost immediately.

Helen noticed.

A small smile appeared.

"Looks like he trusts you."

Lin gently scratched behind the pony's forelock.

"Either that..."

She smiled.

"...or he's hoping I brought snacks."

Daniel laughed.

"That's usually a safe bet with horses."
