Chapter 181 - Preseason Friendly

The warm summer sun draped the iconic San Siro in a golden hue, the glare shimmering off the pristine emerald surface like a stage set for legends.

Though it was only a preseason friendly, the energy in the air said otherwise. Manchester City's sky blue-clad faithful had travelled in force, their voices echoing from the lower tiers, creating a pocket of Mancunian noise in the heart of Milan.

Flags fluttered, chants rose, and camera phones were raised high to capture every moment of the players emerging from the tunnel.

Players jogged out, some exchanging handshakes and light banter with their Italian counterparts. Others soaked in the atmosphere with wide eyes—particularly the younger ones making their unofficial debuts in senior colours. The City bench was filled with familiar names: Adriano Riveiro, Harry Kane, David Silva, Mohamed Salah, Eden Hazard, all watching the warm-up from their seats, relaxed but focused.

Up in the commentary box, Martin Tyler's seasoned voice rolled into homes and bars across Europe.

"Well, here we go again," Martin began, his tone measured with anticipation. "Manchester City, fresh from a historic double—Premier League and Champions League.

They kick off their preseason in one of football's great cathedrals. The San Siro. A new season looms on the horizon, and with it, a wave of young blood eager to prove themselves."

Alan Smith's reply came with a touch of excitement. "You're absolutely right, Martin. This starting eleven from Pellegrini speaks volumes about the club's direction. Young Alexis Mac Allister starting in midfield beside Kevin De Bruyne, Theo Hernandez getting his chance at left back, and another young face Kylian Mbappé on the wing. These aren't just preseason minutes, they're auditions."

Martin nodded audibly. "And all eyes will certainly be on Paulo Dybala today. Just back from a successful loan at Málaga, he was sharp in La Liga. But can he play as the second fiddle to a man like Adriano?"

Alan chuckled, "That's the challenge, isn't it? Dybala has the flair, the vision, but playing in Adriano's shadow is never easy."

There was a moment of pause, as the camera panned to the Manchester City bench. Adriano sat there, relaxed, legs folded, clad in his full training gear. He was chatting casually with Harry Kane, a small smile on his face.

Martin Tyler's voice came back with just a hint of reverence. "But of course, the biggest name today… is still on the bench. Adriano Riveiro. AR10. The architect behind City's transformation. Last season, 67 goals and 41 assists across all competitions. A generational talent. And at just nineteen."

Alan added, "And let's not forget, he's just come off an impressive run in the Euro Qualifiers—six goals and two assists in four matches for Portugal. You'd be a fool to think he's slowed down."

"Indeed, if he carries that form into the new season, Europe should be very, very worried," Martin replied with a laugh.

The teams lined up for the club anthems, formalities, but they added weight to the occasion. AC Milan, in their traditional red and black, had a mixture of experience and youth.

For them, this was a test too. Manchester City, double champions, were the barometer. And while no points were on the line, pride certainly was.

Back on the pitch, the players formed into shape. Pellegrini's familiar 4-3-3 was in play.

Joe Hart between the sticks. Newly returned Van Dijk and captain Vincent Kompany anchoring the back line. Kimmich at right-back, the young Theo Hernandez on the left.

In midfield, Mac Allister and De Bruyne held the engine room, with Dybala just ahead of them. On the wings, Son Heung-Min and the young Frenchman Mbappé. Up front, Sergio Aguero, deadly as ever.

Martin Tyler resumed, "Plenty of tactical intrigue today, Alan. That midfield trio is fluid, and I suspect Dybala will drift deeper to link up play."

Alan Smith replied, "Exactly. And it's the pace on the wings that could hurt Milan. The young Frenchman Mbappé's already been clocked as one of the fastest in training. Combine that with Son's work ethic and off-ball movement, it's a nightmare to track."

The camera once again cut to Adriano on the bench. He was leaning back now, a towel draped over his shoulder, watching the warm-ups with quiet interest. A young fan wearing an old Portugal jersey was waving a handmade sign toward him—"Obrigado, Adriano!"

Martin chuckled. "They love him everywhere he goes, don't they?"

"They do. And more than just the goals, Martin—it's the way he plays. The confidence. The joy. He makes others around him better," Alan replied.

There was a buzz now building in the crowd as the match drew near. The City fans grew louder, belting out "Blue Moon Galacticos" in full force, drowning out the Milan ultras just across the divide. The travelling supporters believed in their team, regardless of the skepticism online.

Because even though the summer transfer window had raised eyebrows, only Son Heung-Min , and young Trent Alexander-Arnold were the marquee arrivals. those who truly watched knew: this City squad was building for something long-term. Not just a superteam of galácticos, but a dynasty of players forged together.

The players gathered in a huddle just before kickoff. Kompany spoke briefly. Dybala nodded. Aguero clapped his hands, urging everyone to start fast. Mac Allister looked calm, his eyes scanning the pitch. Theo Hernandez bounced on his toes nervously.

Then, a final pan to the City bench. Adriano gave a little fist bump toward Aguero, then winked at Mbappé who returned it with a wide grin.

Martin Tyler's voice settled in one final time before kickoff.

"Preseason or not, this is football at its finest. New beginnings, new questions, and a team still carrying the weight of their incredible success last season. Manchester City versus AC Milan. And who knows, we may yet see Adriano before this night is done."

The whistle blew—and the game began.

****

Kick-off. The whistle blew, and immediately Milan pressed high. Adriano sat calmly on the bench, beside Silva and Kane, watching the tempo.

The match began fast and physical. AC Milan looked determined to stamp authority early. Nigel de Jong, playing in midfield for Milan, delivered a crunching challenge on Mac Allister in the third minute, sending the Argentine to the turf. The referee blew quickly, but Alexis popped up with a grin and thumbs-up to his teammates.

Kevin De Bruyne orchestrated the midfield with his usual composed flair. Every touch was clean, calculated. In the 8th minute, he found Theo Hernandez with a sweeping diagonal pass that cut open Milan's midfield. Theo surged down the left, showing explosive pace before cutting in and earning the first corner of the match.

Dybala trotted to take it, raising his arm. The ball curled wickedly toward the near post, where Kompany rose above everyone but mistimed his header—it glanced just wide.

"Almost the opener for the City captain," said Tyler. "Good delivery by Dybala—he's looking sharp early on."

Milan responded quickly. In the 14th minute, they worked a neat triangle through midfield. Bonaventura slipped a pass through to Luiz Adriano, who was momentarily free behind Van Dijk. The Dutchman, back from his season in Malaga, showed his composure, sliding in cleanly to snuff out the chance and drawing applause from the traveling City fans.

City settled after that scare. Mbappé, barely 16, was electric on the right wing. He spun past his marker with a deft touch and sprinted toward goal in the 21st minute. Spotting Aguero making a run, he fizzed a low cross across the box—but the Argentine striker's toe-poke bounced inches wide of the far post.

Alan Smith chuckled, "Oh, Mbappé's just turned 17 next month, and he's making seasoned defenders look like youth players. What a future this lad has."

Then came the breakthrough.

25th minute. De Bruyne received the ball near the halfway line and drove forward. Milan's defenders backed off, wary of his range. He waited, then slid a perfect pass into the left channel. Son Heung-Min darted forward, beating the offside trap, and with his first touch, squared it to Aguero at the penalty spot. The striker did what he always does—one touch, then slotted it calmly past the keeper.

"GOAL FOR MANCHESTER CITY! Sergio Aguero breaks the deadlock!" Tyler announced. "And it's the new boy Son Heung-Min with a lovely assist on his debut."

Aguero pointed at Son, grinning, then gave a heart sign to the crowd. Son bowed slightly with a smile—his first contribution in sky blue, and it was already making headlines online.

The City bench erupted. Adriano clapped with enthusiasm and leaned over to Silva, whispering something that made both men laugh.

Milan tried to rally. They controlled possession in patches, but the center-back pairing of Kompany and Van Dijk held firm. Theo continued to impress, tracking back diligently and using his speed to snuff out any danger down his side.

33rd minute. Another close call. Mac Allister, growing in confidence, pressed high and intercepted a pass. He played a quick one-two with Dybala and fired from just outside the box—but it skidded just past the post. Pellegrini applauded from the sideline.

41st minute. Dybala picked up the ball in the final third and danced past two defenders with his low center of gravity. As the Milan defence closed, he unleashed a curling shot from the edge of the box—beating the keeper at full stretch.

"PAULO DYBALA! A stunner after his return to Manchester City!" shouted Martin Tyler. "City's new attacking midfielder with a goal full of class. That's what you want to see heading into the new season."

Dybala ran toward the corner flag, doing his signature 'mask' celebration that still hadn't become popular yet. The fans behind the goal roared. From the bench, Hazard and Adriano stood to applaud.

"That's a goal to remember," added Alan Smith. "Bit of a statement from Dybala today."

Halftime: Milan 0 – 2 Manchester City.

As the second half began, Pellegrini made changes. Adriano, Salah, and Hazard came on for Dybala, Son, and Aguero. The dynamic shifted immediately.

Adriano, now fully recovered and rested after vacation, took control of midfield. Within moments, he played a no-look pass to Salah on the right, splitting the Milan back line. Salah's cross was teasing, but Mbappé couldn't stretch far enough to make contact.

Then came the moment the fans had waited for.

54th minute. City countered with speed. De Bruyne won the ball and sent it long to Hazard, who raced down the left wing. He cut inside and laid it off to Adriano on the edge of the box.

Adriano didn't hesitate.

One touch to control, and with the second, he rifled a low shot into the bottom corner, past the helpless keeper.

"GOAL!!! ADRIANO RIVEIRO! What a finish! The King of Manchester returns with a goal of pure instinct."

Adriano spread his arms wide, then dropped to one knee and pointed to the sky. The away fans sang his name—"Ooohh Adriano! Ooohh Adriano!"—filling the San Siro with echoes of devotion.

"Clinical. Calm. Class," said Alan Smith. "He makes it look easy, doesn't he?"

City continued to dominate. Kane and Salah both had chances that were well saved, while Mac Allister hit the bar with a thunderous volley in the 68th minute.

Late into the game, Milan pulled one back from a corner. A towering header from Alex sent it past Hart in the 81st minute, but it was little more than consolation.

Full-time: AC Milan 1 – 3 Manchester City.

The players embraced and exchanged shirts. It had been a solid test, and the youngsters had risen to the occasion.

The fans in the gallery cheered their team as the players applauded back, Adriano leading them in a slow, appreciative clap toward the stands. City's preseason had begun on the right foot—energy, depth, and promise.

But Juventus was next. And they would offer a very different challenge.

****

Turin, Italy – July 2015

The sun dipped low over the Alps, casting a golden hue across the historic city of Turin as fans filed into the Juventus Stadium, buzzing with excitement. Though it was only a preseason friendly, the air carried the kind of tension reserved for bigger nights. The reigning Premier League and Champions League holders had arrived, and the Italians were eager to measure themselves against Manchester City's meteoric rise.

Sky blue pockets of travelling fans waved flags and sang chants from one corner of the stadium. The City faithful were loud, confident, and proudly sporting their freshly printed Adriano #10 kits. On the opposite end, Juventus fans, ever passionate, welcomed their team with the kind of pride only Old Lady faithful could muster. The black-and-white scarves waved like battle standards.

Martin Tyler's voice came alive over the broadcast, measured yet brimming with anticipation.

"Welcome to Turin, ladies and gentlemen. It's a beautiful evening here at the Juventus Stadium as Manchester City continue their preseason tour. After a confident 3-1 win over AC Milan, Manuel Pellegrini has rotated his squad once more. New faces, new energy—but still the same hunger."

Alan Smith added thoughtfully,

"It's a good chance to see some depth here. Donnarumma gets his first taste of high-pressure football at just sixteen. Adriano Riveiro starts tonight in the number ten role, flanked by Hazard and Salah. That front line's got pace, creativity—and a whole lot of danger."

"And of course," Martin chimed in, "there's Harry Kane leading the line. He'll be hoping to get on the scoresheet, but all eyes as usual will be on Adriano—the boy who became the heartbeat of this side."

First HalfJuventus, playing in their signature 3-5-2 under Allegri, began the game with defensive discipline. Bonucci, Chiellini, and Barzagli formed a resolute back three. From the whistle, it was clear they weren't going to give anything easy.

In midfield, Marchisio and Pogba marshaled the center with grit, pressing Silva and Casemiro early. Every time Adriano tried to drop between the lines, one of the midfielders stuck to him like glue.

City's fullbacks Kimmich and Robertson were tasked with pushing high to stretch the Juventus formation, but early on, space was hard to come by.

The opening fifteen minutes were cagey. Juventus sat deep, allowing City to have possession but cutting off lanes toward goal. Adriano attempted to play Salah through on the right in the 12th minute, but the offside flag was quick to rise. Hazard was equally well-marked on the left, and Harry Kane cut a lonely figure between the Italian center-backs.

"This is a proper tactical standoff, isn't it?" Alan Smith observed.

"Juventus have come here to frustrate. They're inviting City onto them, and so far it's working."

In the 24th minute, City finally fashioned their first real chance. Silva found Adriano with a crisp diagonal pass, and the Portuguese playmaker turned elegantly to shake off Pogba before slipping in Kane. The English striker struck it low, but Buffon, as ever, read it perfectly and got down to parry it away.

"Vintage Gigi," Martin said with admiration. "Still one of the best in the business."

Juventus responded with a warning of their own in the 31st minute. Pogba stole the ball in midfield and released Morata down the left. The Spaniard cut inside past Kimmich and curled a shot just over the bar.

"Let-off for City," Alan remarked. "Can't afford to switch off at the back."

The remainder of the half continued in a tactical stalemate. Casemiro made several key interceptions, and Hummels commanded the backline with quiet authority. At the break, it was still goalless.

The second half began with Pellegrini urging his men to move the ball quicker. And just ten minutes in, the breakthrough finally came.

It started with a turnover in midfield. Casemiro dispossessed Marchisio and played it quickly to Silva, who advanced and found Adriano on the edge of the D.

Adriano took one touch to control, another to shimmy past Pogba, then with a sudden burst of acceleration, glided between Barzagli and Chiellini. Inside the box now, he feinted once to the left, causing Buffon to shift, before slotting the ball low to the right corner.

GOAL! Juventus 0 – 1 Manchester City

"Oh my word, that is stunning!" Martin Tyler's voice rang out.

"Adriano Riveiro… dazzling feet, ice-cold finish—and City take the lead!"

Alan Smith was just as impressed.

"He makes it look so easy, doesn't he? That balance, the burst of pace, the calmness in front of goal, he's just special."

Adriano jogged toward the away fans, finger to lips, then pointed up at the sky before embracing Silva and Casemiro. The City fans behind the goal erupted, chanting his name rhythmically—"A-dri-a-no! A-dri-a-no!"

Juventus responded with urgency. Allegri brought on Dybala and Khedira to add fresh legs. Their best chance came in the 66th minute when Morata latched onto a lofted ball from Pogba, but Donnarumma stood tall. The teenager parried the shot away with confidence, earning a loud applause from the City bench.

"That's a massive moment for the young keeper," Martin noted.

"And he took it like a seasoned pro."

Pellegrini made substitutions of his own. Silva and Hazard came off, replaced by De Bruyne and Mbappé. City pushed forward again in the 74th minute, and this time it was Kane who got his name on the scoresheet.

Robertson overlapped on the left, fizzed in a low cross, and Kane—poised and perfectly timed—let the ball roll across his body before rifling it into the top corner.

GOAL! Juventus 0 – 2 Manchester City

"What a finish from Harry Kane!" Martin exclaimed.

"Clinical. Ruthless. That's what a number nine is paid to do."

Kane ran to the touchline, sliding on his knees before throwing a punch in the air, mobbed by Mbappé and De Bruyne.

The Juventus crowd quieted. The City fans, meanwhile, were in full voice again, waving scarves and dancing in the stands. Their team had shown maturity, composure, and clinical edge.

The final fifteen minutes saw Pellegrini slow the tempo. Casemiro shielded the defense, and Hummels and Mangala ensured there were no lapses. Donnarumma made one more save in the 89th minute from a Dybala free-kick, sealing his clean sheet with another confident catch.

FULL TIME: Juventus 0 – 2 Manchester City

"That's two wins from two for Manchester City on Italian soil," Martin said as the whistle blew.

"A strong, composed performance. The stars showed up—Adriano, Kane, even young Donnarumma."

Alan agreed,

"You can tell they're hungry. They want more silverware, and with this kind of squad depth, they've got every reason to believe they can do it."

As the players clapped toward the fans, Adriano tossed his shirt into the crowd. He looked up into the stands, grinning as the chants echoed louder. Preseason or not, Manchester City had once again made their presence known.

And Europe, quietly watching, took notice.
