Chapter 29 - CHAPTER 28 : The Glimmer and the Shadow

The council chamber drowned in silence. Shadows draped across the long stone table, broken only by the flicker of cold firelight.

Verran sat rigid, hands clenched beneath the table. His throat was dry.

That boy… that naive boy… dethroned the Merchant King?

The Archon leaned forward on his throne, voice slicing through the stillness.

Archon: "Report."

The female figure lowered her hood slightly, her tone smooth but sharp.

Female Figure: "I found fragments of the text… old, older than the Empire itself. But it resists me. I need more time to unravel it."

A middle-aged man shifted, irritation in his voice.

Middle-aged Figure: "Supplies from Veldrith will falter now. I require new recruits. Stronger ones."

The young figure grinned, a flash of teeth in the dark.

Young Figure: "My work is nearly done. You'll see soon enough."

Then the old man rose slowly, his robes whispering against the stone. From his hands he set down a cube — golden-red, glowing faintly, humming like a heartbeat. The light painted every face in molten fire.

The council leaned forward, captivated.

Archon: "What is this?"

Old Man: "A replica… one of the cores forged to mimic the First Engine's heart. Everything rests on this."

The glow pulsed. Verran's breath caught. That light… I've seen it. Ashenhold… Cassius. The relic he carried…

His thoughts tangled. No. He wasn't strong enough then. Elric. It must have been Elric.

The Archon's gaze slid to him.

Archon: "Verran. You frown. What weighs your mind?"

Verran swallowed hard, masking his panic.

Verran: "This cube… it carries an eerie glow. Dangerous. How do you intend to wield it?"

The old man's lips curled faintly.

Old Man: "We have yet to uncover all its truths. But if it mirrors the First Engine's core… we may command the machines themselves."

The cube's hum deepened, and Verran's nails dug into his palms. If Cassius holds something like this… if he learns to use it…

He pushed back his chair, bowing low.

Verran: "Great Archon. Permit me to depart. There is… something I must confirm in Ashenhold."

The Archon's voice chilled the air.

Archon: "Remember — fail me, and the consequences will be… final."

Verran bowed deeper, hiding the twist of rage on his face.

Cassius. I will not let you rise. Not you.

He strode from the chamber, the cube's glow still burning in his mind.

---

The Archon's cloak trailed across polished steel as he descended into the research halls.

The facility stretched like a wound carved into the earth — endless rows of glass tubes filled with dim light, humming machines that breathed like beasts, and corridors that twisted deeper into the black. Where Veldrith's lab was a hidden chamber, this was an empire of iron veins and flickering fire. The air stank of metal and ash.

Golden-white armor clattered beside him. Lance, his personal guard, walked with measured steps. His helm gleamed in the cold light.

Lance: "My liege… with the Merchant King dead, what is our course?"

On the other side, Dance moved in perfect stride with her twin, her voice sharp as a blade.

Dance: "And what of Verran? I do not trust his silence. Nor can we continue if the supply of subjects dwindles."

A scientist in dark robes scurried forward, clutching a tablet of etched glass, his voice trembling.

Scientist: "Archon… forgive me, but… without more subjects, progress may slow."

The Archon halted, hands clasped behind his back. Silence pressed heavy until his words cracked it.

Archon: "The plan will not stop. Not for corpses. Not for kings."

He turned to Lance.

Archon: "Ride west. The villages there breed strong stock. Bring me those who survive the culling."

Lance hesitated, shifting under his golden helm.

Lance: "That land is heavily protected. And if they refuse…"

The Archon's head turned slowly, his tone soft yet venomous.

Archon: "Since when did you tremble at such trifles? If they refuse… you know what to do."

Lance bowed low.

Lance: "Forgive me, my liege."

Dance tilted her head, eyes narrowing.

Dance: "And the boy… Cassius?"

The Archon paused only a moment, his gaze drifting to the vast chamber's heart. A massive pod towered there, veins of light crawling across its surface, pulsing faintly like a slumbering heart.

Archon: "Time runs thin. Cassius is nothing — a small fry chasing ghosts. Let him wander."

The twins saluted, their armor ringing like a single strike, before vanishing into the shadows.

The Archon stepped closer to the pod, resting his hand upon the cold surface. The glow beneath it shifted, answering his touch. His lips curled into a smile — not of joy, but of hunger.

Archon (whisper): "Soon… you and I will rule this land. Genesis will kneel. All of it will be mine."

The pod pulsed again, as though it heard.

---

Veldrith had not sung like this in decades.

Banners of crimson and gold hung from the stone walls. Children chased each other through the squares, ribbons fluttering in their hands. Bards strummed lutes and harps, their voices rising in song as merchants handed out bread and fruit to the crowds. The streets, once silent with fear, now pulse with laughter.

Inside the throne room, Jorvan sat upon the high seat, his posture firm yet unadorned. Behind him, the captured men of the Merchant King knelt in chains. Two guards stepped forward, bowing.

Guard: "My King, the people celebrate your victory. The kingdom breathes again."

Jorvan's gaze swept the hall, his voice steady.

Jorvan: "Certainly. A sight I have long prayed for. Yet we cannot linger in festivity. Veldrith must rise to its past glories. I intend to restore old law and order."

He paused, the weight of his words pressing against the pillars.

Jorvan: "Though I bear no royal blood, I ask for your support."

The councilors gasped, whispers rolling like a wave. One of the elders clutched his staff, speaking with emotion.

Elder: "Heavens, my King, do not belittle yourself so. You have saved this realm. You shall have our aid."

Jorvan bowed his head slightly.

Jorvan: "Then Veldrith shall stand once more."

Cassius and his companions stepped forward.

Cassius: "Then… we shall take our leave."

Jorvan rose from the throne, descended the steps, and laid a hand upon Cassius's shoulder. His grip was warm, his eyes solemn.

Jorvan: "You have given this kingdom hope. For that, I thank you."

---

The next morning

The sun gilded the castle gates. Jorvan stood waiting beside Ronan, the two kingsguard banners flanking them.

Cassius glanced at Jorvan, frowning slightly.

Cassius: "Is it right for a king to stand here at the gates?"

Jorvan laughed, the sound easing the tension.

Jorvan: "When one has been lifted by another, it is only right to walk with them. You saved me, and my people. I will see you off myself."

Ronan nodded firmly.

Ronan: "That's right."

One by one, Jorvan embraced them — Cassius, Elric, Varcen, and Korvek. His arms lingered, as though he were holding brothers instead of allies. Ronan clasped Cassius's hand, firm and unspoken words passing through the grip.

The group mounted and departed, their figures shrinking into the morning road.

From the shadows, Lyra and Voric watched, then melted away.

Ronan's gaze lingered on the fading silhouettes.

Ronan(thought): Cassius… if it truly is you, then one day… perhaps we can finish what was left undone. Be stronger when next we meet.

His lips curved into a faint smile.

Ronan (whisper): "Until then… I will do my duty."

The banners above the gate swayed in the wind as he turned back toward the kingdom.
