Chapter 14: Enrollment
Konoha Year 21, Spring.
Six-year-old Uchiha Nian finally reached school age.
On the first day of school, Sarutobi Hiruzen stood on the grand podium in the ninja academy's square, draped in the Hokage's sacred robe, passionately addressing the new sprouts of Konoha:
"Wherever there are leaves dancing, fire will burn. The shadow of fire will illuminate the village, and new leaves will sprout. A ninja's true power emerges when they seek to protect those most precious to them..."
A gentle breeze blew as flowers bloomed in abundance. At this moment, both students and parents basked in the sunlight, their faces radiant with happy smiles, each pair of eyes brimming with hope for the future.
Only Uchiha Nian stood silently at the very back of the crowd, his eyelids lowered, appearing utterly alone.
For some reason, even though the Hokage himself was present and everyone was happily gathered together, he couldn't feel the slightest warmth—instead, a sense of disgust welled up from the depths of his heart.
He hated occasions like this.
Because this atmosphere was only temporary, an illusion. No matter how wonderful things seemed now, wouldn't he still have to return to that empty little home after school?
He raised his head, scanning his surroundings until his gaze finally landed on two familiar, sneaky figures hiding in some bushes.
Kirito, Orochimaru!
These two guys finally skipped class to "attend" his enrollment ceremony.
Nian's gaze trembled slightly - at this moment, he made his decision.
'So-called ninja schools are just slightly bigger buildings. I don't need to blend in with them. Having these two friends is enough.'
Time slipped away unnoticed, and the ceremony quietly concluded amidst Nian's wandering thoughts.
Just as he was hesitating whether to greet Kirito and the others, someone suddenly bumped into his shoulder. He staggered instantly, his tendons reflexively tensing up, barely managing to steady himself thanks to his excellent sense of balance.
Before Nian could even turn around, an aggressive shout rang out:
"Hey, are you blind or did you forget to bring your eyes when you left home?"
This was a chubby boy with slightly brown curly hair, wearing an oversized tank top printed with the character "Food"—clearly another new student enrolling this year.
The reason for this judgment was that Nian noticed the boy was followed by an equally plump woman.
"Xu, mind your manners when speaking to others!" The portly woman gave a token scolding, her gentle tone dripping with affection.
Obviously, the reprimand had zero effect, as the fat boy immediately stepped forward and grabbed Nian's collar with his stubby arms.
"A member of the Uchiha clan? Hmph, what's your name?" The fat boy noticed Nian's clan attire.
Nian remained calm, raising both hands. "My name is Uchiha Nian. My apologies for bumping into you."
Akimichi Kyō shoved Nian aside with a threatening tone, "Hmph! Watch where you're going next time!"
"Oh my~ No need for such temper. You might end up being classmates in the same squad..." The plump woman chuckled behind her hand.
"Don't worry Mom, I'll get along with him just fine..." Akimaru turned his head and gave Nian a sinister smile.
Nian adjusted his collar without responding to the provocation.
Since he'd already decided to be invisible, there was no need to get angry. He didn't want to draw attention on the very first day of school.
And so, after school on that first day, Uchiha Nian found himself cornered in a shadowy alley near the school gates by three kids his own age.
"Akio? So this is the guy who messed with you?"
The speaker was a blond-haired boy, judging by his clan attire, likely a member of the Yamanaka clan.
"Hey, he's still an Uchiha at least. Don't take things too far," warned a ponytailed boy.
Akimichi Akio snorted coldly. "What's so great about the Uchiha? My uncle was ambushed and killed by an Uchiha traitor back in the day. I've got zero goodwill toward these bastards."
Nian's face showed no fear, only a hint of helplessness in his tone. "So then, what do you plan to do? I believe I've already apologized."
These three before him were likely children from the "Ino-Shika-Cho" clans. Being targeted by them on the first day of school was definitely not a good thing.
"Hmph, what are we doing?" Akimichi Asahi sneered. "Just giving you a little 'adjustment'! Next time you see us, remember to take the long way around!
"Is there really no room for negotiation?" Nian's gaze remained calm, but before he could finish speaking, Akimichi Asahi had already charged forward, throwing a punch aimed straight at Nian's face.
"Then there's no other way." Nian sighed helplessly, retreating half a step while tilting his body to let the chubby fist brush past the tip of his nose, effortlessly dodging the attack.
"You dare dodge!" Akimichi Kyu halted his momentum, twisted at the waist, and swung another punch in retaliation.
Nian slightly bent his knees, lowering his center of gravity as he tilted his head to the left, once again evading the fat boy's fist.
Now Akimichi Kyu's defenses were wide open, his entire back exposed as a glaring weak point in Nian's view. If he wanted, he could easily deliver a left hook to the back of the other's head and shut him up for good.
But he merely gave Akimichi Kyō a push on the back, sending him stumbling forward to collapse into his companion's arms.
"Let me say this one last time—if you're angry because I bumped into you, then I can absolutely apologize, but that's as far as it goes."
Nen's emotions remained remarkably steady, his tone neither heated nor cold. "First, I'm terrified of pain and have no desire to get beaten up. Second, even if my dignity is worthless, I won't allow you to humiliate me so easily."
In truth, during the year before enrollment, he had already learned to condense chakra under Orochimaru and Uchiha Kirato's tutelage. That day, the chakra test paper displayed four distinct reactions!
One corner burst into flames, another was moistened by flowing water, a third split into two pieces, and the last crumbled into paper scraps.
This proves that Nian was born with a full four chakra natures!
As a result, he also learned a few minor wind and fire release techniques from them. Additionally, through daily training in the abandoned practice field, Nian's taijutsu and shuriken throwing skills had reached a decent level.
Though still not comparable to Orochimaru and the others, dealing with a few kids his age was more than enough.
"Bastard! Who the hell do you think you're looking down on!"
Akimichi Kyō's face flushed crimson as he charged forward again, unwilling to admit defeat. The two boys behind him exchanged glances before shouting in unison, "Let's get him together!"
"You brought this upon yourselves."
Nen adjusted his breathing and stood his ground. Only when the trio closed within a few steps did he finally act—flinging his shoulder bag straight into Akimichi Kyō's face.
Taking advantage of the obstructed view caused by Akimichi, Nian first charged towards the child from the Yamanaka clan. Raising his left arm to block the incoming punch, he swiftly grabbed the opponent's wrist and stepped forward in one fluid motion, cutting into the lower stance like a long blade tearing through enemy lines.
Nian's gaze suddenly sharpened as he seized the momentum to violently rotate his body. With a beautiful shoulder throw, he slammed the Yamanaka onto the ground, leaving the boy dazed and disoriented.
At that moment, the backpack fell to the ground, revealing Akimichi Akira with blood streaming from his nostrils—the full weight of the books had smashed directly onto his nose.
Then he saw Uchiha Nian sweep Nara off his feet with a single leg sweep while forming hand seals, then exhale a breath toward himself.
"Wind Release: Breakthrough!"
The air surged violently as Akimichi Asahi instinctively closed his eyes. A fierce gale sent him flying backward, slamming him against the wall behind him.
"That hurts!" He clutched the back of his head, tears welling up from the pain. When his vision cleared, Uchiha Nen was already standing before him.
"Let's end today's matter here."
Looking down at Akimichi Asahi from his superior position, Nen pressed a shuriken against the chubby face with two fingers.
"I have no intention of being your enemy, nor do I wish to challenge your dignity. Can we agree to coexist peacefully from now on?"
The icy sensation finally roused Akimaru Kyō's consciousness. He looked up at Uchiha Nen, staring into those lifeless, unblinking eyes, and shuddered violently.
"Fine," he managed to croak out. The overwhelming gap in their strength forced him to face reality.
Just then, applause echoed from the alley entrance. Uchiha Tōnin appeared side by side with Orochimaru, their approving gazes looking upon Nen as if he were their own disciple.
"Not bad at all, Nen. Your taijutsu is starting to resemble my style more and more," Tōnin remarked.
"Hmm, your Wind Style has improved significantly too."
Akimaru Akihiro was completely dumbfounded. "A... an upperclassman..."
Any thoughts of "settling the score later" completely vanished like autumn smoke.
The crisp, forceful applause seemed to slap directly against his chubby face.
On the eaves, a calico cat licked its paw, then stood up straight and stretched gracefully.
