Ryu raised his hands, and the chains came out, golden and burning with flames of chakra. They arc in two directions: one toward Koharu and one toward Danzo. Stopped a few inches from each face, hanging in the air.
Danzo did not react. The chain hovered at his throat. He neither blinked nor leaned back; the chains were a demonstration, not a threat. He had watched this boy since the academy entrance exam years ago and had noted the red hair and the name then. The golden chains at his throat changed nothing he had not already accounted for—he had expected the display and knew the boy would not attack for real. And knew that the chains were theatrics, meant to provoke a reaction, not to land a blow.
But unlike Danzo, Koharu flinched.
Hiashi Hyuga's Byakugan activated involuntarily, white eyes tracking the chakra-fire's composition, the density, the purity, and the unfamiliar signature woven through it. A few seats down, a sensor ninja exhaled slowly, confirming what the white eyes had found. She did not look away from the chains.
"That is my proof of the Uzumaki lineage," Ryu said. "If fate had written another name for me, I would be known as Ryu Uzumaki instead of Ryu Hamura."
"My father was from the Uzumaki clan. A clan you owe a great debt to."
"He is a wandering Uzumaki, trying to father as many children as he could, hoping to preserve his bloodline after the destruction of our home village in the Land of Whirlpools."
Natsurama Senju smiled—brief, dry, knowing. The boy had just backed his claim with the rarest bloodline technique in the room, and he had done it without looking for permission first.
He thought, "The boy has teeth. Lunging at Danzo takes balls of diamond."
The chains snapped back into Ryu's palm, swift and reabsorbed as though they had never left. The flames guttered and died. And the chamber did not fall silent.
The murmurs began, not about bloodline.
That was brave, someone muttered. Or foolish. The civilian-born members exchanged glances with clan representatives.
Chouza Akimichi's voice rumbled from across the table—low, thoughtful: "My god—a real Uzumaki. Just like Kushina."
Koharu's voice came low, meant for the inner circle, not the full chamber. "Indeed. The Uzumaki constitution is well-documented. Jinchuriki host compatibility runs through the bloodline; only one in a thousand finds a compatible vessel for a tailed beast."
Homura did not turn his head. "Finding a second at the right moment is a logistical nightmare. The Uzumaki are even rarer than the ocular bloodlines in the entire ninja world now. But he would be a suitable backup for any misfortune with the Nine-Tails. Like four years ago."
A civilian-born ninja near the end of the table muttered, barely audible, "I still get shivers at night thinking about that night. Tomorrow is the four-year anniversary."
Ryu's voice cut through before the sentiment could settle. "If you're that scared, maybe you shouldn't hate Naruto. Thank him for his sacrifice. And make his life easier—assign his responsibility to me."
The words were careful and clinical. They did not need to say 'backup' aloud for everyone to hear the shape of it.
Fingers tapped tabletops. Heads inclined in reluctant calculation.
Ryu heard them clearly and thought, "They're seeing me as a backup. I can use that as leverage—make Naruto permanently near me."
He said nothing. He waited.
Hiruzen's voice cut through, heavy and reluctant. "The Nine-Tails seal weakened a few days ago—at the same time our earlier meeting was being held. It happened within the Hamura Estate walls. I did not want to create panic, so I wrapped things up quietly. That is also why I put a stay on my earlier order."
The words landed like a stone in still water.
To hear the seal loosened now, a day before the four-year anniversary of the night the beast had razed half the village, was to feel the old dread coil in the gut all over again.
Danzo's one eye narrowed a fraction. The shift in the room's mood was not to his liking. They now had cause to credit the Hamura estate's fuinjutsu and the boy's Uzumaki blood with containing the breach, and Danzo had not expected the council to turn so fast.
A murmur ran the length of the table. "Elder Dan must have handled it," someone said. "As a grandmaster, he would have dealt with it before it got out of hand."
An Inuzuka clansman grunted agreement. "The boy was there too. Uzumaki blood - we have a replacement ready at all times. It is the best contingency for the village... just in case."
Danzo filed the thought away. He needed to make the boy react, and this was the only opening he would get.
The room stilled.
Then Danzo spoke.
"If the seal is still unstable," Danzo said, "it would be prudent to change the host before the next incident. The risk, after all, is the village's."
He did not argue the chains and did not question the lineage. He compared the talentless boy whose seal was unstable versus the Uzumaki child who had just manifested a dead clan's rarest technique. His voice was clinical, almost detached.
He looked at Hiruzen. The meaning was surgical. He was suggesting something cruel, dressed in the guise of precaution.
Ryu's chakra spiked.
Not the deliberate [Gear-Three] he had shown in the Tower. This was base-level active chakra, [Gear-2], but sharpened with killing intent. It rolled off him in a wave, refined and directed, not the clumsy bloodlust of a child throwing a tantrum but something purposeful. It poured off an eight-year-old like steam from a quenched blade.
S-rank shinobi felt it. Hands stilled on the tabletop. A clan head shifted back in his seat by a fraction; the intent's quality was wrong for someone his age: shaped, targeted. Near the end of the table, a civilian ninja's breath caught. He pressed himself an inch closer to his chair's backrest and held still. What killing intent, he thought. Is he really just an academy kid?
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Ryu said.
He pointed at Danzo.
"Suggesting something like that. With a straight face. You know what happens to the host when the beast is removed. You are suggesting murder of a four-year-old, like it is a logistics problem."
Koharu's voice snapped across the chamber. "You were warned about active chakra in this chamber. Contain yourself."
Ryu turned on her. "This committee member just suggested the murder of a four-year-old. The same four-year-old you all owe your lives to. If the fox had not been sealed in him, would any of you have had the balls to face it?"
"You'll all be running with your tails between your legs."
The words hung. No one answered. No one could.
Danzo's stillness did not break. But inwardly, only one thought registered, filed away as data rather than reaction:
Good. This is the reaction I wanted to see.
The chamber held its breath.
"This bastard is doing it on purpose. I will make him pay," Ryu thought.
Ryu's breathing steadied. The killing intent receded as quickly as it had risen. He smiled, thin and controlled.
Ryu said, "Your clan had a history of running scared from the Nine-Tailed Beast in the past... right?"
Then, quieter, more precise:
"I'm talking about when your clan was called the Yoshimura Clan, not the Shimura Clan as it is known right now," Ryu said. His voice was quiet and precise. "Ring any bells?"
For just a moment, a fraction of a heartbeat, Danzo's stillness cracked. A name the clan had all but buried, known only to its head and chosen successor. "How does the boy know that name?" A flicker in his visible eye, there and gone before anyone could be sure they had seen it. But Ryu had seen it.
Dan Hamura had been still through every accusation, every silence, and every outburst. A fixture in the background, watching the boy he had raised dismantle everything the council thought it knew.
Yoshimura. A name absent from every archive he had ever read—and he had read them all, clan records and war scrolls both. If it touched the Shimura, no history book remembered the link. Dan thought, "What game are you playing now, boy?"
Danzo's stillness changed. Not a flinch, nothing visible, but the quality of it shifted.
The council stirred. A murmur that was not about seals or chakra; it was about history none of them had heard. Clan leaders exchanged glances.
"Backstabbing is in your blood," Ryu said. "It is in your nature. Maybe Lord Second saw that and never chose you—even when you were as talented as Grandpa Third, the rival you lost to."
Danzo did not answer. His silence was no longer just composure. It was the silence of a man recalculating.
Ryu's voice cut through, even and calm; the anger was fully mastered.
"Maybe you all want to hear how the Shimura clan came to be."
The room stirred. Interest flickered across faces that had been stone for the entire sitting. They knew Danzo's reputation, his methods, his reach, and the network of shadows he commanded. But his history? The origin of his clan and the foundation it was built on? None of them knew it. And Ryu had not been wrong about anything tonight.
"A story from over a thousand years ago," Ryu said. "Before the founding of the ninja villages. Before the First Hokage's dream was even a whisper."
The council leaned in despite itself, even the civilian members, who had been hostile, dismissive, cold, holding still, and unwilling to miss whatever came next.
"The origin story of the Shimura clan."
