Chapter 48 - The Capital

The outer streets hit them before the gates did. People everywhere, not moving with purpose but displaced, scattered, the kind of crowd that forms when somewhere else has stopped being safe. Soldiers with hollow eyes. Makeshift shelters wedged between buildings. Children sitting on bundles. The sound of it was low and constant, not loud, which was somehow worse.

Sylana was waiting at the gates.

She looked tired. Not the theatrical exhaustion she sometimes performed, but real tiredness that lived behind her eyes. She spotted the carriage and pushed through the crowd toward it without waiting.

Flare dropped down first. Alert. Scanning. Then, Valeria, composed as ever, regardless of four days of road. Then Lita, stepping down into the noise and the press of it, her gaze moving over everything and struggling to hold all of it at once.

Sylana reached them, stopped. Looked at each of them. "You made it. The capital has held, but just barely."

Valeria's eyes moved across the mass of people. "The Northland's forces are pushing hard. The reports we've been hearing… It's worse than we imagined."

"Worse is an understatement." Sylana's voice had no performance in it. "Their forces are like nothing we've ever seen. Ruthless. Relentless. They've broken through the second and third defenses. The outer regions are completely lost."

Lita stood close, quiet. "Are we safe here?"

Sylana glanced at her. Something in her expression shifted, sharpened differently. "For now. But we need to prepare. We're not far from the front lines anymore."

Flare, behind them: "Where are we staying?"

"I've arranged for rooms in the secure district, near the main stronghold. You'll be safe there for the time being."

They moved toward the inner gates. The streets got cleaner, more organized, and patrols moving with real focus. But tighter. Coiled. Everyone is waiting for something.

"What's the situation inside the capital? How are our forces holding up?"

Sylana exhaled. "It's not good. Supplies are low, morale is even lower. The generals are arguing among themselves, and the emperor hasn't been seen in days. There are rumors..." She stopped. Shook her head. "We'll talk more when we're secure."

Lita looked at the soldiers they passed, the lines in their faces, the way they held their weapons like things they'd been holding too long. "Will we have to fight here too?"

Valeria's hand found her shoulder. Gentle. Firm. "Not yet. But you must be ready, Lita. We may not have a choice soon."

At the large building near the central fortress, Sylana stopped and turned. Looked at Valeria with something specific in her eyes. "There's someone you need to meet. He's waiting for you inside."

No reaction. Just a nod.

The meeting room.

Long table. Candles. Faces Valeria half-recognized and some she didn't. Elara at one side, expression unreadable and watching the door. And at the head of the table, a demon. Tall. Sharp-featured. Violet eyes that moved to Valeria the moment she entered and stayed there.

She crossed the room without slowing.

"Welcome, Valeria Valliere," the demon said. Smooth. Authoritative. "We have much to discuss."

She took her seat beside Elara. "What is the reason for this gathering?"

The demon gestured at the assembled faces. "The Northland invasion poses a threat not just to the Southland, but to all territories aligned with the empire. We must strategize a united front."

A noble leaned forward, jaw set. "We've received reports that the Northland forces are not only advancing rapidly but are also employing dark magic. We cannot afford to underestimate them."

Dark magic. Valeria's expression didn't change but something in her posture did, some small, invisible adjustment.

"What are our options?"

Elara's voice cut across the room. Commanding. "We must fortify our defenses and consider alliances with other factions. However, we also need to address the internal strife among our nobles. Not everyone is willing to stand united."

The demon: "Additionally, we may have to make difficult choices regarding our resources. If we are to withstand the Northland's advance, sacrifices will need to be made."

"What sacrifices are you suggesting?"

The demon leaned forward. "We may need to consider an alliance with other beings—entities that may not be entirely trustworthy but whose power could tip the scales in our favor. We must prepare for the worst."

The discussion continued. Voices layering over each other, positions staking themselves out, fear and strategy and ego mixing in the air the way they always did in rooms like this.

Then a noble, voice too loud: "What could have possibly made the Northland this strong? They were barely a threat before! This must be a trick!"

Another: "Perhaps we've overestimated our own strength. If they've gathered such forces, surely they must have some new magic or weaponry."

Elara's hand hit the table.

Hard.

Silence. Complete.

"Enough!" Her voice stripped the room bare. "You're all missing the point. The Northland has either obtained a new king or some other form of power we do not yet understand. We cannot afford to underestimate them based on past encounters."

Nobody spoke.

"If we allow fear and doubt to dictate our actions, we risk losing everything. We need to focus on the facts in front of us, not on assumptions."

The demon nodded. "Elara speaks the truth. We must gather intelligence on the Northland's new capabilities and adapt our strategies accordingly. Underestimating our enemy has always led to our downfall."

The murmur that followed was agreement with an edge of unease underneath it. Valeria could feel the ones who still weren't convinced.

"We need to take action." Her voice. Clear. Cutting through the room. "Let's deploy scouts to gather more information about the Northland forces and their strategies. We can't wait for them to make the next move."

An older noble, face creased with doubt: "And if we learn nothing? What then?"

"Then we adapt and prepare for battle. This isn't just about us anymore; it's about everyone in the Southland. If we want to protect our people, we have to take the initiative."

Silence spread out. Valeria met Elara's eyes across the table. A nod. Small.

"We must act decisively," Elara said, quieter now. "For our future and the future of our families. The time for hesitation has passed."

The room shifted. Reluctance giving way to something more useful.

The demon lord's eyes settled on Valeria with the particular quality of someone who has done research. "You were known as a formidable force during your time in the Northland capital twenty years ago. What happened then? Did you encounter any truly powerful adversaries? It's said that you took down two kingdoms single-handedly."

Valeria sat with it for a moment. "It was a tumultuous time. I was young, driven by a desire for justice and power. The kingdoms were weak and corrupt, and I saw an opportunity to eliminate threats to the Southland. But it wasn't just about strength; it was about strategy and taking advantage of their weaknesses."

"And what of the individuals you faced? Were there any who truly posed a challenge to you?"

A pause. Genuine, this one. Something moving through her eyes that she let show for a second. "There were a few. But none who could match my resolve. The Northland has always been filled with strong fighters, but their leadership was fractured. That's why I was able to take down those kingdoms."

"What if they've learned from those defeats? What if their new king has harnessed the strength of those you once bested?"

Valeria's jaw set. "Then we must be ready. I won't underestimate them again. I've seen what fear and chaos can do to a kingdom, and I won't let it happen here."

The demon lord leaned back. "Then let us prepare our forces. If the Northland has indeed gained power, we will need every skilled warrior, every piece of magic at our disposal."

The doors burst open.

A soldier. Breathing hard, face white. "My lord! The Northland troops have breached the last border! They're advancing without rest!"

The room cracked open with noise. Voices over voices, chairs scraping, someone's cup going over.

The demon lord stood. "How far are they from the capital?"

"Less than a day's march, my lord. They're pushing forward with relentless speed."

Valeria's eyes found Elara's. One second of communication, private and fast.

The demon lord's voice carried over the chaos. "We must mobilize our forces immediately. Every warrior needs to be ready. Prepare the defenses and alert the citizens. We will not go quietly into this night."

Nobles pushed back from the table. The room began to empty into motion.

"I will lead the charge." Valeria's voice cut through it all.

Elara's hand on her arm. "You can't go alone. I'll stand with you."

A noble turned. "Madam, you must stay and coordinate the defenses here."

"No." Flat. Final. "If we let them reach the capital without resistance, we will lose everything. We need to show them we will not back down."

The demon lord looked at her. Calculating. Then something that wasn't quite respect but was close to it. "Very well. You will lead a small unit to intercept them before they reach the city. Use the element of surprise."

Valeria was already moving.

Adrenaline in her blood, purpose in each step, the thing that had been building since the first report three days ago finally having somewhere to go.

She didn't look back at the room.
