The library was quiet that morning.
Light pressed through the curtains in thin, pale strips, and Lita sat with her wrist turned upward, watching the bracelet catch every bit of it. She'd been doing that for a while. Just looking.
Her mother was at the desk nearby, working through the stack of papers that never seemed to shrink. Lita pulled herself off the window seat and crossed the room. "Mother, can I ask you something?"
Her mother glanced up. "Of course, Lita. What's on your mind?"
"Does this bracelet have magic? Grandma said it was a treasure of Valliere, but I don't really understand what that means."
The papers went down. A real pause, the kind that meant the question was being taken seriously. "Yes, my dear. The bracelet is indeed imbued with magic, but its true power lies in its ability to enhance the wearer's abilities and protect them. It's a legacy of our family, designed to aid you in your journey as you grow stronger."
Lita's pulse jumped. "So it can help me with my magic and sword skills?"
"Exactly." A nod. "But remember, the magic isn't just about power. It's also about understanding yourself and using that power wisely. The bracelet will amplify your abilities, but it won't do the work for you."
That landed somewhere it needed to. Lita turned her wrist again, slow. "I want to learn how to use it properly. Can you help me with that?"
"Of course, we can incorporate it into your training." A small smile crept in at the edges. "You'll need to focus on honing your skills and understanding the magic within the bracelet. That way, you can unlock its full potential."
"Thank you, Mother! I'll train really hard!"
Her mother's laugh was soft. Brief. "I know you will. Now, let's make some space in this office so we can prepare for your lessons. I'll help you find the right books on magic and combat."
Flare was in the training room twenty minutes later, reorganizing equipment with the kind of focus that made interrupting her feel slightly dangerous. Lita called from the doorway anyway. "Flare! Can you help me with something?"
Flare turned. One eyebrow. "Of course, Lita. What do you need?"
"I want to figure out the purpose of this bracelet my grandma gave me. Mother said it enhances my abilities, but I'd like to understand how to use it better. I know you can't use magic, but you're really good at practical training. Maybe you can help me test it?"
A pause. Then a nod. "I may not be able to use magic, but I can definitely help you with your techniques. Let's start by trying some of your basic spells and see if the bracelet reacts in any way."
They moved to the center of the floor. Lita shrugged her coat off. The bracelet sat against her skin, still and warm. She raised her palm and pulled at a basic fireball.
The bracelet pulsed back.
Not hard. Just a low, steady throb, perfectly timed with the magic moving through her. Lita's eyes went wide. "Wow, it feels different. I think it's responding!"
"Good, now try to control it." Flare's gaze locked onto every flicker of the flame. "Focus on how it feels with the bracelet. You might be able to amplify your magic or change its form."
Lita leaned in. The fireball tightened, then stretched without her quite telling it to, curling into a small spinning vortex of flame. Heat kissed her cheeks. She laughed out loud, the sound bouncing off the stone walls.
"See? You're already getting the hang of it!"
"Let's try something else." Already grinning. "What if I combine magic with my sword skills? Can we set up a mock battle?"
Dummies went up. She struck. Again. Again. The bracelet fed something back with each hit, a subtle lightness in her limbs, a half-second of knowing where to move before her brain caught up. Flare watched without speaking, which from her meant things were going the right way.
The sun moved. They kept working.
"Let's try to incorporate a spell with your sword strikes," Flare said. "Maybe you can create an elemental effect as you attack."
"Okay! I'll try to channel fire with my sword."
Breath in. Breath out. Lita swung, and a fiery arc tore from the blade in one clean curve. It hit the dummy center-mass. Brief flame, then char. The smell of scorched wood drifted over a second later.
"Brilliant! You're getting the hang of this much faster than I expected."
"I can't believe how powerful this bracelet is! I wonder if it has more abilities?"
Water next. A thin mist gathered around her feet and climbed, cool and light, then fire again wrapped inside it. The blade came through trailing something that was neither element entirely. Light scattered off it in colors Lita had no names for.
"Wow! That looks amazing!"
Her chest felt too full. "I think I'm really starting to understand how to use this bracelet to my advantage!"
Later, sweat on her brow, she looked at Flare sideways. "Flare, do you think my grandma knows more about this bracelet?"
"It's possible. If it's a family treasure, she might have insights into its history or how to fully utilize it." Flare handed her a cloth. "Maybe you could ask her when she has time."
"Yeah, I'll definitely do that." Eyes back on the bracelet. Quiet for a moment. "I want to learn everything I can about my family and my powers."
The next morning came fast.
"Today, I want to experiment with some different spells," Lita told Flare.
"Great idea. Focus on one element at a time and see how the bracelet responds."
Earth first. She stretched her hand toward the ground and pulled. "Earth, heed my call!" Stones tore free from the soil, orbited her once like they were checking her intentions, then settled into a low barrier at her feet.
"Impressive! You've got the hang of this pretty quickly!"
She didn't stop. Fire and earth, a boulder wrapped in flame and thrown hard. The impact threw debris in every direction and left a blackened crater in the dummy. Lita laughed, loud and unguarded. "Okay, that was awesome!"
"Just be careful with the combinations. You don't want to lose control again."
Wind. "Air, come to me!" It gathered in her palms, thickened, pushed outward into something not quite visible but present, bending the light around the edges of her hands.
A shield. Alive-looking.
"Now, try combining wind with something else."
"Okay! How about fire?" The tornado that spun up was small but it roared like it wasn't, and she brought it down in a clean controlled collapse that left a scorch ring on the training floor.
"Wow, Lita! You're really getting creative!"
Last. Water and ice. Mist first, then cold, then sharp. A dozen ice shards hung in front of her, perfectly still, waiting for the word. She gave it. They flew straight and hit exactly where she wanted.
Silence.
"I can't wait to show my mom what I can do!"
"Just remember to ask her about the bracelet, too."
"Definitely." The bracelet sat warm and steady on her wrist. "I feel like I'm only scratching the surface of what I can achieve!"
