"Joseph… I finally understand why so many Trainers spend their entire lives dreaming of owning a pseudo-legendary. A fully evolved pseudo-legendary is just too powerful! Even though Sandstorm is supposed to be a support weather move, in our Boss's Tyranitar's hands it becomes this overwhelming…"
From the audience stands, Mark stared intently at the battlefield, but still found time to speak to Joseph beside him.
"The so-called pseudo-legendary Pokémon are those with power comparable to Legendary Pokémon but without actually being Legendary. Tyranitar's strength is undeniable, but look… look closely… look veeeery closely.
Lolo doesn't show the slightest bit of anxiety. He's even chatting with Sato voluntarily. That must mean he has an even stronger Pokémon, strong enough for him to believe he still has a chance at a comeback."
Joseph spoke with certainty, and his deduction wasn't far off from the truth.
---
"To think I'd be forced into this corner… the kids of this generation are truly is impressive," Lolo said softly on the battlefield.
"Yeah." Sato nodded without holding back. After all, there was no mic on the field, so the audience had no idea what he said.
Lolo was momentarily stunned by Sato's bluntness. He let out a chuckle and said no more, finally pulling out his third Poké Ball.
He enlarged it, threw it, and with a flash of red light, a two meter tall, orange-colored Pokémon appeared on the field.
It was a Charizard!
"CHAAAAR! CHARIZAAAARD!"
Charizard let out an excited roar the moment it entered, and only after venting did it finally turn its eyes to its opponent.
A taller, bigger, and stronger green behemoth?
Unfortunately… it couldn't fly…
Charizard flapped its wings, positioning itself just half a body higher than Tyranitar, just enough to look down from above.
At this point, Lolo continued, "Normally, Charizard wouldn't stand a chance against your Tyranitar. But I must thank you… because of you, it now has even greater potential."
As he spoke, Lolo raised his right hand. On his wrist was a bracelet, but unlike ordinary ones, it was embedded with a Key Stone!
At the same time, a red-orange-yellow Mega Stone on Charizard's right horn began to shimmer faintly.
"Charizard, Mega evolve!"
Sato squinted as both Charizard and Lolo were enveloped in multicolored light. It seemed to last only an instant.
…Or perhaps forever.
As the light faded, a newly transformed Charizard appeared on the field: one with three horns and a dramatically more streamlined figure.
Mega Charizard Y!
Compared to before, Mega Charizard Y's speed had greatly increased. With its enhanced flight capabilities, it circled the battlefield in the blink of an eye.
And it didn't stop there… while Mega Charizard soared energetically through the air, the Sandstorm on the field rapidly diminished, replaced by blazing heat and blinding sunlight.
Tyranitar's Sandstorm had been completely overpowered by Charizard's Sunny Day!
"WAHAHAHAHA! How about that… MY MEGA CHARIZARD!" Lolo laughed triumphantly.
After Mega Evolution, Charizard's power had drastically increased. Although it hadn't broken into Elite Four level, it was now INFINITELY close.
The reason Charizard didn't leap directly from Ace to Elite Four after this Mega Evolution was simple: the gap between Elite and Ace is nowhere near the same as the gap between Ace and Elite Four.
Sato recalled what Drake had once told him; what exactly made the difference, Drake had left for him to discover on his own.
…But now, trying to defeat him by relying on the advantage of Mega Evolution? Sato suddenly felt that Lolo was stubborn to the core.
"…Tyranitar…"
"Tyran!"
Trainer and Pokémon responded in sync. Sato gripped the Key Stone hanging from the necklace around his neck, while the black crevice on Tyranitar's shoulder shimmered with a red-and-black Mega Stone.
"Tyranitar… MEGA EVOLVE!"
Once again, the unique multicolored light of Mega Evolution lit up the battlefield. Sato and Tyranitar were enveloped in it simultaneously, and under Lolo's stunned gaze, Mega Tyranitar officially appeared!
After Mega Evolution, the spikes on Tyranitar's armor extended in all directions, becoming brand new offensive weapons, at the same time resembling a massive cloak hanging from its back. It looked unbearably cool…
As for its power, Tyranitar too had reached a level infinitely close to Elite Four, though still seemingly separated by a thin veil; unseeable, untouchable.
More importantly, its Sand Stream Ability, previously suppressed, now regained dominance, completely overriding Charizard's Drought.
On the field, a fiercer sandstorm surged once more. Only above the storm could one barely feel traces of that scorching heat.
The final showdown hadn't even started, yet two rare Mega Evolutions had already occurred in succession. The atmosphere was growing so intense that if a battle commentator were to step in now, it would feel like a full-scale tournament.
At last, Lolo snapped out of his shock. His earlier confidence now completely gone. Just like when he had wanted Yanmega to beat Tyranitar with Bug Buzz…
Under Sunny Day conditions, Charizard's instant Solar Beam could have dealt significant damage to Tyranitar.
But once again, Lolo miscalculated. In a weather war, Tyranitar -with Sand Stream before and after Mega Evolution- naturally held the advantage.
Moreover, weather matchups themselves also involved elemental suppression.
Rock-type Sandstorm, Fire-type Sunny Day, Ice-type Hail, and Water-type Rain… all five weather effects had a clear cycle of dominance.
Fittingly, Rock-type Sandstorm, under equal conditions, could suppress Fire-type Sunny Day.
As a result, Solar Beam could no longer be used instantly, greatly reducing its threat to Tyranitar.
As for the rest of Charizard's Fire-type moves… Tyranitar wasn't fazed at all!
This was now the second time. Lolo had deliberately chosen Pokémon that could counter Tyranitar, yet both had failed to even perform before being dismantled.
There was no outlet for the frustration building up in Lolo's heart!
What made it worse was that the average spectator had no idea about the tactical battles unfolding beneath the surface. So from their perspective, Lolo simply looked stubborn.
First came Staraptor, which was somewhat understandable.
…Though it looked like a complete sacrifice.
Then he sent out Yanmega, 4x weak to Rock, only to be brutally struck down by Tyranitar's Rock Slide; this left everyone puzzled.
And now his third Pokémon? A Fire/Flying-type Charizard, again 4x weak to Rock!
Even the few supporters Lolo had left in Jubilife City were losing their minds. 'Was this old man really going to be hard-headed to the end? Didn't he have any other Pokémon?'
Sure, Mega Evolution looked cool… but just three seconds later, it got instantly shut down by the opponent's Mega Evolution.
So now the question was: how was he planning to win this battle at all?
