Chapter 305: Im Bragging, My Exclusive Moment

Across the country, fans were losing their minds over what Chen Yan had just done.

"Holy crap, holy crap, holy crap!"

"This is one of those games where people turned the TV off early and will regret it for the rest of their lives."

"That was not just a comeback. That was ripping the game out of the grave."

"Thirteen points in 33 seconds against the Spurs, the most disciplined defensive team in the league, in the playoffs. I only have one word. Unreal."

"If I was not in a crowded cafeteria right now, I would probably be on my knees."

"Attention students, do not hand in your exam early. There was once a man who dropped 13 in the last 33 seconds."

"Somewhere out there an old guy in a white suit is filing a report, saying the last 33 seconds of his life were stolen."

Social feeds were full of jokes and memes, but under all the noise there was one simple truth.

The 13 points in 33 seconds were legendary, but Chen Yans performance was not just about that final half minute.

He logged 42 minutes, put up 57 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds.

From tipoff to buzzer, his touch was hot and the ball was constantly in his hands, so the box score looked like something out of a video game.

It was the first 50 plus triple double in NBA playoff history.

And he did not do it alone.

Steve Nash dished out 15 assists. Amar e Stoudemire finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The role players did their jobs on both ends. All of that work from everyone on the roster set the stage for Chen to go full god mode at the end.

Inside the arena, fans refused to leave.

They wanted to savor every second of having just put the Spurs on the wall of shame.

Thousands of Phoenix fans stood and chanted Chens name over and over, keeping him on the floor a good 15 minutes longer than usual just so he could salute them back.

On his way from the tunnel to the locker room, the same American girl who had screamed she wanted to have his basketball baby actually tried to shove her bra into his hand. He dodged it at the last second.

Chens hands were huge, but even he did not plan to grab everything.

The game had gone out live around the world. Getting caught on camera with that in his hand would not be a great look.

In the Suns locker room, the doors were closed and the party was loud.

Nights like this did not happen often.

His shoes, jersey, and even the printed stat sheet were immediately snatched by teammates who wanted souvenirs.

While the others were still yelling and spraying water, Chen headed straight for the showers.

Even there he kept the same ritual. As the hot water hit his back, he pulled up the system. The cooldown after a game was always the moment he liked to check his rewards.

Congratulations to the host for recording the first 50 plus triple double in the playoffs, 35 honor points awarded.

Ding.

Congratulations to the host for completing ….

After the cascade of electronic prompts, Chen had collected 96 honor points in one night.

A massive haul.

Most of it came from those two milestones, 13 in 33 and the 50 plus triple double.

He did not stay in the shower long. He knew there was a wall of cameras and microphones waiting outside. Tonight was going to be busy.

By then, legends, analysts, and active players had already started reacting.

Everybody had something to say.

Yao Ming, in his usual dry style, posted, "Moments like this show up about once every 100 years, and somehow I have been lucky enough to see two of them."

Gary Payton said, "Guarding Jordan, I would say you just give everything you got. Guarding Chen Yan, I would rather check myself out of the game."

Oscar Robertson commented, "The energy that kid played with amazed me. A triple double in the playoffs is hard enough. Add 50 plus on top of it, that is something else."

Kevin Durant wrote, "It felt like watching a dream or someone playing on easy mode. There was a point where I literally had to pinch myself. Every shot he took went in. It was ridiculous."

LeBron James said, "Forget being his teammate, it is an honor just being a fan of his."

Allen Iverson said, "Chen has taken over from a lot of the older guys as the new favorite for kids"

Gilbert Arenas joked, "I am still the best shooter to wear number 0. Chen does not count as a shooter. That dude is an assassin."

Larry Bird added, "If he scored 100 points right in front of me, I would not even be shocked. This guy looks like he could do it in 30 seconds."

Magic Johnson laughed, "He did not care about anything out there, he just kept putting the ball in the basket. One word for him, straight up court bully."

Kobe Bryant said, "He is a player out of hell. Just like me, he has that deep, burning refusal to lose.:

Barkley, who had called the game on TNT, tweeted later.

"Long distance runners have resting heart rates in the 30s or 40s. I am convinced Chens is about 20. That man is too calm."

Before long it was time for the postgame press conference, the part the media had been waiting for all night.

As soon as Chen walked in, every light in the room swung toward him.

"Chen, congratulations on the miracle. Thirteen points in 33 seconds, your own signature moment. Tell us how you feel right now."

He had just sat down when the first question hit him.

"Excited, and then even more excited," Chen said with a grin, gripping the microphone. "This is the kind of moment you dream about. When you give everything you got to the game, sometimes it pays you back. I am just happy I could use my ability to flip the score at the end, and I am really grateful to my teammates. Those 13 points in 33 seconds do not happen without everybody. Steves passes, Amares work in the paint, Boris Diaw and Raja Bell stepping up with huge buckets when we were still down 10. Basketball is a five man game."

While he shared how hyped he was, he did not forget to shine the light on his teammates, especially Diaw and Bell. They were part of the moment too. It was their back to back scores with 49 seconds left that started the charge.

"During that run when you scored 13 in a row, were you thinking about the T Mac moment at all?" another reporter asked.

"T Macs moment is legendary and inspiring. It motivates me a lot," Chen said smoothly. "But when I was on the floor, I did not really have a long inner monologue going. All I was thinking about was getting the ball in my hands into the basket. That was it."

"Chen, what did you say to Ginobili that made him miss that one crucial free throw after being perfect all night?"

Chen smiled. "I told him that if he missed it, he already knew who was going to finish the game."

He was not the first player to use a little psychological warfare at the line, but he had definitely just added his name to the list of guys who made it work.

"Chen, do you think you are the best offensive player in the NBA right now?"

He did not bite on the bait. He shrugged. "That is not something I spend time thinking about. I focus on the game. The only thing I can say for sure is I definitely would not want to be the guy trying to guard me."

The room broke into knowing laughter.

Boastful Chen was back. Calm with the media, but still giving himself his flowers.

After Chen finished a full round of questions, the reporters turned to head coach Mike D Antoni and Amar e Stoudemire beside him.

Most of the questions were still about Chen, but neither of them minded. Tonight there had only been one true main character on the floor.

"Coach, were you surprised by how crazy Chen was in the final minutes?" someone asked D Antoni.

"He can catch fire at any time," D Antoni said with a smile. "I just have to look into his eyes to know."

"At the end you took off your suit jacket and popped your shirt open. Do you feel like that was a little undignified when you look back on it now?" another reporter teased.

D Antoni shrugged. "If Chen Yan can do this every night, I am happy to lose my dignity every single game."

The room erupted in laughter. The coach had his own kind of humor.

When one reporter asked Stoudemire what he thought about the Chen Yan moment, Amar e answered without any drama. "A real man keeps his word. When I fouled out, Chen told me not to worry, he said he would take care of the game. Then all of this happened. He really did it. I am proud of my brother."

Across the hall, at the Spurs podium, the mood was completely different.

Talking about Chens explosion, Tony Parker could only describe it with a helpless smile. "It felt like watching somebody stick a knife in your heart and there is nothing you can do about it. He is a great player. At the end we all knew he was going to shoot. We still could not stop it."

Phoenixs final play calls were not subtle. Everyone in the building knew Chen would be the one to decide the game.

Knowing what is coming and actually stopping it are two very different things.

After repeated questions from the media, Popovich finally dropped the line that would be replayed everywhere. "Tonight, God was playing in a number 0 jersey."

Then he added, "I am not in the habit of praising opponents, but what he did tonight is going to keep our whole team up. That is the best individual performance I have ever seen in person."

As soon as that quote hit the air, fans started to calmly break down just how great the Chen Yan moment really was.

They all kept circling back to the same point.

The Spurs had basically not done anything wrong.

With one minute left, Phoenix was down 10. From that point on, San Antonio missed only one free throw, and still Chen dragged the game into a place no one had ever seen before.

A perfect storm of desperation, talent, and will.

Headlines began to roll out one after another.

Chen Yan does not believe the long night is coming, because the torch is in his hand

Phoenix Night Without Sleep

Chens rampage delivers a 50 plus triple double

That night, Chen did not fall asleep until 4 in the morning.

He lay there in the dark, phone in hand, scrolling through article after article, replay after replay, all the praise and all the reactions.

He let himself enjoy every second.

This night, this feeling, this memory.

It was his exclusive moment.
