The tension in the palace had not yet settled. Though Sir Edric had been placed under guard, his influence still lingered, and whispers of the scandal spread like wildfire through the halls. Arianne knew that until the king made his final decision, the threat was far from over.
Aldric and her other brothers spent most of their time strategizing, ensuring that their family's standing remained strong among the court. Meanwhile, Arianne found herself seeking the comfort of the gardens, where she could momentarily escape the suffocating weight of expectation.
It was there that Rian found her, standing beneath the ancient willow tree, her fingers tracing the petals of a blooming rose.
"You seem troubled," he observed, his voice gentle.
She let out a soft sigh. "I should be relieved. Edric has been exposed, and yet, I feel like this isn't the end."
Rian stepped closer, his presence steady and reassuring. "You're right. He still has allies, and there will be resistance to your actions. But you have your brothers, and you have me."
Arianne turned to face him, searching his eyes. "I never expected to find such loyalty in you."
He smiled faintly. "I never expected to fall in love with a princess disguised as a soldier. But I did. And I will stand beside you no matter what comes next."
Her breath hitched at his words. Love. It had been there all along, growing quietly between them in the midst of battles and secrets. And now, with everything laid bare, she had no reason to deny it any longer.
She took a hesitant step forward. "Rian... If my father commands me to marry for political advantage, if duty demands I walk a different path—"
"I'll fight for you," he interrupted, his voice firm. "If you choose me, I will stand against any force that tries to take you away. But it has to be your choice."
Arianne's heart swelled with emotion. For the first time in her life, she had someone who saw her as more than a princess, more than a pawn in the political game. He saw her strength, her defiance, her heart.
She reached for his hand. "Then I choose you."
Rian exhaled sharply, as if he had been holding his breath, and then, without hesitation, he pulled her into his arms. His lips met hers in a kiss that spoke of promises and devotion, of love that had endured through war and deception.
When they finally parted, she rested her forehead against his. "No matter what happens next, we face it together."
He nodded, determination burning in his gaze. "Together."
But even as they shared this moment of peace, danger still loomed. Edric was not one to accept defeat quietly, and in the shadows, another storm was brewing.
The Whisper of Shadows
The next morning, Arianne awoke to the soft knock on her chamber door. She rose, slipping into a robe before opening it to find Aldric standing there, his expression tense.
"We need to talk," he said in a hushed voice.
She stepped aside, letting him in. "What's happened?"
Aldric closed the door behind him. "The king has called a formal gathering of the court. It seems Edric has a final card to play. We don't know what it is yet, but whatever it is, it's enough that Father is willing to hear him out."
Arianne swallowed hard. "What do we do?"
"We prepare," Aldric said. "And we make sure that no matter what he says, we are ready to counter it."
Rian entered a moment later, his face set in grim determination. "Then let's make sure Edric's last move is his downfall."
Arianne looked between them, feeling a renewed strength surge within her. "We end this. Once and for all."
