She pulled into a parking spot behind Pollack's green SUV. Fritzy twisted in his seat to glance her way. She arched a brow at him, amused. Maybe Pollack had tipped him off, or maybe Fritzy's instincts were sharper than she'd given him credit for. Still couldn't tell if the rookie had a brain behind those clean-cut looks.
She flicked on the radio, letting the late morning DJs chatter fill the car. Most of it was fluff news and celebrity gossip. Her eyes flickered to Bullock, who stood just outside the door, chatting with Gordon's kids. Two redheaded charmers waving to the officers posted outside their home. The cops waved back without breaking stride.
Those kids were so blissfully unaware, she almost envied them.
She watched the uniforms shuffle over to the cruiser packed with the boys, shoulders leaned in, voices low, clustered around Pollack. What she wouldn't give to tap their frequency.
The radio droned on, Gotham's gossip delivered by a woman's upbeat trill voice.
"What's hot in Gotham's nightlife, Jess?"
"Same old circus—Matt Hagen hitting the bottle and the blackjack tables at The Birdcage. Practically living there, by the sound of it. And guess who's back? Paige Monroe, fresh off a flight from L.A., trailed by a dozen glamazons. They made a splash at the Iceberg Lounge and didn't stagger out until after two."
"Drunken supermodels—sounds like a case for…" Bells and whistles. "The Prince of Gotham!"
"Ha! Yeah, though everyone knows Wayne steers clear of Cobblepot's joints. But he's been missing from the party circuit lately. Maybe nightlife finally knocked him out."
"Or he's hitting the snow?" one DJ muttered, followed by an exaggerated sniff. A chorus of sniffing and snorting erupted in the background.
"I'm sure you mean the slopes in Aspen," Jess said, laughing.
Perez turned the volume down with a flick. She couldn't stand the garbage, but now and then it tossed her something worth chasing.
Back on the street, the officers straightened as if called to attention. Whatever Pollack said had hit home. But how much had he told them?
