Chapter 419 - Psychic Power and Balance (Bonus Chapter)

The website had completely calmed down, with no trace of the previous arguments left. Seeing that the heated debates were gone, Shiro actually felt a bit bored, so he exited the site.

"This 5GB file…"

He opened the breeding knowledge Elm had sent earlier.

At first glance, it seemed valuable, but once opened, it was just document after document packed with dense text.

"Maybe I can cram a bit at the last moment and do some last-minute revision?" Muttering to himself, Shiro opened the first file and started reading line by line.

The average incubation time of Caterpie eggs... the average time for Caterpie to evolve into Metapod... the average time for Metapod to evolve into Butterfree... the average lifespan, minimum lifespan, and maximum lifespan of Butterfree...

The information continued endlessly, each line blending into the next. Before he could even finish going through the Caterpie line, his vision started to blur.

If it were just a few Pokémon, it would be manageable. But this covered hundreds of species, and it wasn't just about time and lifespan. It also included a huge amount of breeding and reproduction details.

Shiro could tell that Elm had truly sent everything without holding anything back.

But…

He slapped his forehead as something suddenly came to mind.

He had psychic powers. Why not use them to help with memorization? Psychics naturally had better memory, right?

However, the moment he tried, he realized things weren't that simple. He had no idea how to use his abilities to assist his memory at all.

After a moment, doubt even crept into his mind. 'Do psychic powers even work like that?'

'Come on! Your psychic ability needs to reach at least the Gym-level before it can affect the brain!' Unown A suddenly popped out. 'And besides, you're not a natural psychic. You gained it later!'

"…" Shiro fell silent for a moment, then said, "A, you do it!"

After staring at the files for so long, he had almost forgotten about Unown A. Even if he couldn't remember everything, Unown A definitely could. If it remembered, it was basically the same as him remembering.

He wouldn't need to master it himself, nor would his psychic power need to reach that level. As long as he could use simple telepathy to communicate silently, that would be enough.

Handling the audience wouldn't be a problem at all.

With that thought, Unown A had already floated in front of the computer. A soft pink glow flickered around it, and the files on the screen began flipping rapidly. Documents opened and closed one after another in quick succession until the very last file was reached.

'Ha…'

Unown A floated into the air and let out a long breath. 'This is all the same old stuff. Nothing new.'

As it spoke, it flickered onto Shiro's shoulder.

"You memorized everything?" He asked.

'Of course!' it nodded. 'With psychic powers, this is easy.'

Shiro felt a bit confused. Right now, he only knew that his psychic ability was around the Beginner-level. He could extend it to move light objects and even eavesdrop on ordinary people's thoughts, though he had never tried it.

According to Unown A, once he reached the Intermediate-level, he could use psychic power to conceal his presence. At the Advanced-level, he could use Teleport.

"What about Gym-level psychic powers? If they can affect the brain, what can they do?" He continued asking.

'Hmm…' Unown A pondered for a moment. 'You can control the minds of ordinary humans who don't have special abilities and turn them into your servants.'

"Really?" Shiro asked again. "Then why haven't Psychic-type Pokémon taken over the world?"

Psychic powers were incredibly strong and versatile, and Psychic Pokémon were highly intelligent. Even if their numbers were small, if they controlled human leaders, wouldn't they be able to rule the world?

'You think that's never happened in history?' Unown A snorted. 'It's happened many times, and not that long ago. Five hundred years ago, in the Sinnoh Kingdom, a Champion-level Psychic Pokémon controlled the king. With the resources of the entire kingdom, it rose to Master-level and nearly took control of the whole nation.'

"Then…?" Shiro found it hard to imagine what came next.

'After that, the psychic Pokémon was discovered by the lake guardians. It was defeated and then restrained by the lake.'

Unown A paused briefly before adding, 'Mesprit should know more about it.'

After all, Mesprit was one of the Pokémon involved.

"Mesprit?" Shiro called out carefully.

After several seconds, it slowly revealed itself. When he felt a soft weight on his head, he knew it had appeared.

'Mm… that was a long time ago.'

It gently swayed its tails as it recalled the past.

'It was an Orbeetle. It seemed to have been offered to Sinnoh by another country. At that time, the king was curious. He didn't understand why a ladybug had something like a little person beneath it, so he tried to study it himself.'

"And then…?" Shiro asked.

'He got controlled,' Mesprit said casually. 'We were just carrying out His will. When something unbalanced appears in the world, we are guided to fix it.'

So it was Arceus maintaining balance.

Shiro thought about it, but something still felt off.

"If that's the case, then when legendary Pokémon are captured by humans, He should interfere too, right?"

'That used to be the case.' Unown A's tone suddenly turned heavy. 'If a legendary Pokémon with authority was captured, He would personally intervene.'

"Used to be?" Shiro repeated in confusion.

'Now… well, not long ago.' Unown A shook its head. 'I only awakened recently, so I'm not sure exactly when it changed. But He has a problem now. He no longer maintains balance. Instead…'

"He's encouraging chaos?" Shiro guessed.

'Exactly.' Unown A nodded. 'I suspect He has something to do with your appearance.'

"Me?" Shiro pointed at himself. "Did He pull me here from my world?"

'Mm…' Unown A clearly didn't want to go deeper into the topic. 'I wouldn't dare guess His intentions. I can't imagine what the world will become either.'

"Wait!"

Shiro suddenly realized something important.

"A, did you already know I was special the first time you saw me?"

If that were true, then back when it hesitated before agreeing to follow him for two years, was it just pretending?

Unfortunately, Unown A didn't seem interested in answering. It simply vanished and went to sleep.

Just as Shiro was about to say more, Mesprit lightly tapped his cheek with the tip of its tail.

'Someone is outside.'

With that, it disappeared instantly.

Shiro pushed those thoughts aside and got up to open the door.
