Lore:

Lesser Æsther Shades are soul echoes born when æsther energy fails to fully reincorporate into the Vein after death. Found lingering around æsther-rich ruins, failed rituals, or deep Void-pockets, they are unstable remnants—neither spirit nor thought, yet disturbingly aware of the living. Their presence is often marked by cold winds, flickering light, and whispered names not yet forgotten.

They are frequently encountered by students on their first foray into corrupted æsther fieldssuch as graveyards, though always under supervision—these beings, while not terribly strong, can warp æstherflow and confuse even skilled casters.

Abilities:

Ethereal Form: The shade can move through creatures and solid objects as if they were difficult terrain. If it ends its turn inside an object, it takes 5 (1d10) force damage.

Void-Touched Disturbance (Recharge 5–6): Emits a pulse of æstheric disruption. Creatures in a 10 ft. radius must succeed a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or lose 1 spell slot or suffer æsther drain (as applicable in-system).

Memory Flicker (1/Day): Targets a creature within 30 ft. The target makes a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or is Frightened for 1 round and hears voices of the dead. On success, they gain minor insight (+1 WIS save) for 10 minutes.

Actions:

Draining Touch

Melee Spell Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.

Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) necrotic damage. Target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or lose 1 point of temporary æsther until a long rest.

Drops / Loot:

Æsther Fragment(Common) — 1d4 units. Used in æsther-repair or crafting.

Spectral Coil(Uncommon) — Used in enchantment items for anti-undead resistance.

Whispered Name(Lore item) — Glows faintly near æsther corruption. Collectible.

Void Residue(Rare, if variant) — Used to detect nearby Vein-touched terrain.

Variants:

1. Wisp-Drift Shade(CR ¼)

A weaker, flickering echo often found near newly formed æsther scars. It has half the HP, no Memory Flicker ability, and only deals 1d6 necrotic damage on Draining Touch. Common training target for first-graders under faculty supervision.

2. Shrieking Shade(CR 2)

A violent offshoot that manifests near the site of magical trauma or battlefields. Can scream once per short rest to deal psychic damage in a 15-ft cone. Immune to fear.

3. Hawnt the Mime, Echo-Bound Observer(Unique)

This rare shade did not attack but instead stared, mimicking Kaiden's breath, thoughts, and hesitation before fusing briefly with him. This moment unlocked the Echo-Bound trait, a dormant ability tied to Voidspace and reflection. It left behind no body — only an Unspoken Core, an item with hidden passives.
