They experimented violently with different antenna configurations. They erected massive wooden masts, strung with heavy copper wire, trying to determine the exact optimal height required to push a signal clearly through the dense, humid atmosphere of the coast.

"Arthur. Broadcast test three. Do you read?" Caleb spoke into the heavy microphone.
The response was not a crackle. It was not buried in static. It was shockingly very clear, echoing through the laboratory speaker as if Arthur were standing directly behind them.
"I read you, Caleb. It's actually clear this time. It doesn't sound like you're yelling through a tin can in a hurricane."
Tesla stared at the speaker cone, completely frozen, before his face split into a massive, manic grin. "The resonance is perfect! The antenna configuration stabilized the wavelength!"
Caleb immediately began viewing the tower not as a science experiment, but as an industrial template. "We map this exact schematic, Nikola. We standardize the height, the copper gauge, and the generator output. If we build these relay towers at strategic intervals across the states, we can daisy chain a signal from Saint Denis to New York without losing a fraction of clarity."
Despite the massive breakthrough, Caleb adamantly refused to let the scientific work consume his entire existence. When the sun went down, he washed the grease and mud from his hands, put his suit jacket back on, and went home to his wife.

"He is only manageable because I have been sending Antonio out to that laboratory twice a day with hot meals and strict orders to make sure you both actually eat them," Mary-Beth pointed out, a highly amused, knowing look in her dark eyes. "Left to your own devices, the two of you would starve to death trying to figure out how to make electricity talk."
"Which is exactly why I married you," Caleb smiled, kissing the back of her hand. "To save me from myself."
The marriage felt incredibly warm, deeply lived in, and perfectly balanced against the terrifying scale of the empire he was running.
Once the tower prototype proved utterly reliable, Caleb pushed the radio project into its next, most revolutionary phase.
He stood at the chalkboard in the laboratory, drawing a series of parallel lines.
"A strong signal is useless if it is the only thing we can broadcast, Nikola," Caleb proposed, tapping the chalk against the board. We have a mass media empire. One wavelength could be dedicated entirely to broadcasting daily news to the public. Another could broadcast music. The concept elevated the radio from a simple communication device into a technology with staggering, incalculable commercial value. It allowed infinite users to occupy the exact same atmosphere without ever drowning each other out.

They immediately threw themselves into developing the tuning system.
It was an incredibly difficult mechanical and mathematical puzzle. Caleb provided the practical direction, the ultimate need for a simple dial that a non-scientist could operate, while Tesla wrestled with the heavy theoretical physics.
Their early attempts created horrific, overlapping interference. One prototype successfully isolated a frequency, but the signal became wildly unstable, drifting across the spectrum every time the room temperature changed.

When the telegraph arrived from Washington confirming the patents were secured, Caleb felt a deep, powerful sense of satisfaction.

Tesla let out a long, shaky breath, the panic slowly receding in the face of her quiet confidence. "Thank you, Mrs. Thorne."
Caleb stepped into the room, impeccably dressed in a sharp black suit. He looked at Tesla, projecting absolute, unyielding confidence. "Are you ready, Nikola?"
"I am," Tesla nodded, straightening his tie.

Sitting in the absolute center of the stage was a polished wooden table. On it rested the massive, heavy receiver box, featuring the large brass tuning dial and a flared acoustic speaker cone. Nothing was attached to it. There were no wires running across the floor, no telegraph cables connecting it to the walls.
Caleb stepped up to the podium. He did not speak in the dense, impenetrable language of theoretical physics. He spoke directly to the businessmen, the politicians, and the ordinary people in the crowd.
"For the entirety of human history, communication has been bound by physical limitations," Caleb's voice rang out, clear and commanding. "If you wanted to send a message, you needed a man on a horse. Then, you needed a train. Then, you needed a physical copper wire stretched across the continent, vulnerable to storms, sabotage, and time."
Caleb gestured to the wooden box on the table.
"Tonight, the Thorne Holding Company, in partnership with Mr. Nikola Tesla, intends to sever that wire forever."
Caleb nodded to Tesla, who stepped forward and engaged the power to the receiver. The box hummed quietly.
"Five miles away, at a secure facility on the edge of this city, my associate is sitting in front of a transmitter," Caleb explained to the silent crowd. "There is absolutely no physical connection between that facility and this room."
Caleb looked at his pocket watch. "Arthur. You may begin."
For three agonizing seconds, the hall was dead silent.
And then, the heavy wooden box on the table crackled.
"This is Arthur Morgan, broadcasting from the Saint Denis transmitter. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen."
The voice echoed loudly and clearly through the exhibition hall.
The reaction was instantaneous and explosive. Several men in the front row physically jumped in their seats. A wealthy shipping magnate dropped his cigar on the floor. The journalists in the press box began scribbling furiously, their eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated shock.
The public had just heard a human voice materialize out of thin air.
"Incredible," a university scientist whispered loudly, staring at the box as if it were a holy relic.
"But a single voice is only the beginning," Caleb continued, raising his hand to quiet the murmuring crowd. "If we are to connect the world, we cannot have everyone shouting over one another. We must control the spectrum."
Caleb walked over to the receiver. He placed his hand on the heavy brass dial.
"Mr. Tesla has engineered a system that allows us to physically isolate and select different, invisible wavelengths," Caleb explained. "Channels of information, occupying the same air, entirely separate from one another."
Caleb turned the brass dial with a heavy click.
Arthur's voice vanished instantly. In its place, the bright, lively sound of a brass band playing a popular jazz tune poured out of the speaker cone.
The crowd gasped audibly.
Caleb turned the dial again. The music vanished, replaced instantly by the stern, measured voice of Hosea Matthews reading the evening's weather report from a third transmitter.
The exhibition hall erupted.
It was absolute bedlam. Men were on their feet, clapping wildly. Journalists were practically sprinting for the exits, desperate to reach the telegraph offices and wire the story to New York. The military representatives were staring at the stage with terrifying intensity, instantly calculating the sheer, devastating tactical advantage of wireless, multi channel coordination.
The telegraph executives in the crowd, however, sat perfectly still, their faces pale as they stared at the wooden box that had just rendered their entire global monopoly obsolete.
Caleb stood at the edge of the stage, perfectly composed, his hands resting on the podium as the applause washed over him. Tesla stood beside him, completely overwhelmed by the roaring, positive validation he had sought for his entire life. The inventor had tears in his eyes, bowing slightly to the cheering crowd.
The demonstration was a flawless, world-altering triumph.
Within an hour, the telegraph wires out of Saint Denis were humming with frantic energy. The news was spreading like wildfire, ripping across the continent toward New York, Washington, Connecticut, and Detroit. The radio had officially entered the public consciousness.
Later that night, long after the exhibition hall had emptied, Caleb stood near the edge of the stage. The electric lights had been dimmed, casting long shadows across the polished wooden floor.
Mary-Beth walked up beside him, her arm looping through his. Tesla was across the room, animatedly explaining the capacitance of the dial to a lingering, highly fascinated local politician.
Mary-Beth looked out at the empty, silent rows of chairs, and then looked up at her husband.
"Do you truly realize what you have just started, Caleb?" she asked softly, the profound gravity of the evening settling over her.
Until tonight, Caleb had been a man who built factories, forged steel, and sold food. But tonight, he had introduced a technology that would fundamentally alter the fabric of human existence.
It would transform journalism, dictate elections, reshape entertainment, command armies, and shrink the vast, lonely expanse of the globe into a single, connected room. Caleb looked at the heavy wooden receiver still resting on the table, and then looked down at his wife. "I think I have, Mary-Beth," Caleb admitted quietly, a complex, terrifyingly ambitious smile touching his lips. He pulled her close, staring out into the empty hall, knowing exactly what the future held.
