Saturday 3 February 1995
At his home in L.A., Walt Disney was seated comfortably alongside his daughters, Dianne and Sharon Disney, his nephew Roy Disney, and his wife, Lillian Disney. Both of Walt's daughters were now in their fifties, and Roy had taken charge of managing the company as the current CEO of Disney. Despite being offered shares in the company by his cousin, Roy had declined, feeling that holding the CEO position was more than enough responsibility. He had no interest in ownership—his passion lay in preserving the legacy and creative direction of the Disney brand.
Dianne asked her father, "Dad, are you sure about this? Fifty percent of Disney shares… that means Disney won't be majority-owned by our family anymore?"
Walt Disney chuckled, lounging on the couch as he played Pokémon Crystal. Without looking up, he responded, "Don't worry about it, Dianne. Believe me, this Zaboru boy is the real deal. Besides, we're already old, and the last thing I want is to see my Disney become just another money-grubbing company."
Roy Disney sighed. "I sure hope you're right, Uncle Walt. I really hope this Zaboru guy can create something amazing for us."
Sharon smiled warmly. "Haha, I actually love ZAGE products, you know! They make me feel young again!"
Lillian watched her family with a quiet smile, clearly enjoying the moment. Then she added with a hint of concern, "Are you sure this deal needs to happen here…? I mean, it's our home, you know? aren't usually deals like this held on expensive hotels?"
Walt laughed. "I know the kind of person that Zaboru boy is. He hates fancy things just like I do. He prefers a good home-cooked meal. Honey, please cook the best food you can—and in large portions, too. He's known for his appetite, after all."
Lillian chuckled, and Sharon and Dianne eagerly offered to help in the kitchen. The two women left to prepare the meal, while Roy and Walt remained in the room together, their conversation growing more serious.
"Uncle, how confident are you that this deal will elevate Disney again?" Roy asked.
Walt shrugged casually. "I just have a hunch it'll succeed. And you know how often my 'hunches' turn out right, don't you?"
Roy sighed. "Yeah, but as far as I know, you haven't had any hunches in the last couple of years, right?"
Walt chuckled and nodded. "Yeah, this one's pretty recent. Don't overthink it, Roy—it'll be fine. You'll see when he gets here."
Roy sighed again and nodded. He never cared much about money or power. What mattered to him was seeing Disney return to creating timeless masterpieces. If Zaboru could help make that happen, then that was more than enough for him.
Meanwhile, on Zaboru's side, he now stood in front of the grand estate known as the Disney Mansion. He had been personally invited to Walt Disney's home by Walt himself, who reached out via phone call. Walt had explained that this was simply an informal meeting to gauge whether Zaboru was truly interested in buying Disney. He had also requested that Zaboru come alone, preferring a private, low-key conversation over a formal boardroom discussion.
Zaboru sighed. "Why is it in his home… well, here goes nothing." He pressed the doorbell, and a butler soon appeared to greet him. With a polite gesture, the butler led Zaboru through the grand halls to the main room where the meeting would take place. As they walked, Zaboru took in the sight of the Disney family home. Despite its enormous size and grandeur, the place exuded a cozy, lived-in charm that made it feel surprisingly welcoming.
Then Zaboru arrived at the room where Walt Disney and another man were seated. Walt looked up and smiled warmly at Zaboru. "Zaboru boy! Welcome! Oh, and this gentleman here is Roy Disney—my nephew and the current CEO of Disney."
Roy stood up and extended his hand. "Mr. Renkonan."
Zaboru smiled and shook his hand. "Mr. Disney."
Roy chuckled. "Just call me Roy. You can save 'Mr. Disney' for my uncle. That nickname suits him better."
Walt laughed heartily. "Hahaha, yeah, that's true."
Zaboru smiled again. "Sure thing, Mr. Disney."
Walt then grinned. "You hungry, boy?"
Zaboru chuckled. "Kinda, but I can wait, Mr. Walt."
Walt Disney laughed. "What nonsense! Let's eat first!"
He stood up and motioned for Zaboru to follow him to the kitchen. As they entered, Zaboru's eyes widened at the sight of the lavish home-cooked spread laid out on the table—crispy fried chicken, steaming hot dogs, golden pies, and bowls of hearty baked beans. The aroma filled the kitchen with a mouthwatering warmth that reminded Zaboru of the comfort of his own childhood meals.
He took a seat but initially held back, trying to be polite. Just as he reached for a small portion, Walt noticed his hesitation and said with a grin, "Just eat it. Don't worry, we've got plenty, boy!"
Zaboru smiled appreciatively. "Then I will, Mr. Disney."
He dug in with enthusiasm, savoring each bite. The food was absolutely delicious—full of flavor, clearly made with care, and served with a kind of love that no high-end restaurant could replicate. The textures, the warmth, the seasoning—it all blended perfectly to create something deeply satisfying.
"This stuff is amazing," Zaboru said between bites, barely pausing as he took another helping of the fried chicken.
Walt watched him with amusement, clearly pleased. "You prefer this over fancy restaurant food, don't you, Zaboru boy?"
Zaboru nodded while munching on his chicken. "Clearly, Mr. Disney. This food is incredible. It tastes like home—it's real."
Walt leaned back with a proud grin. "That's the spirit. I always said good food doesn't need a white tablecloth."
They shared a brief laugh, the mood light and friendly. In that moment, it was clear they understood each other—not just as business partners, but as people who valued honesty, simplicity, and authenticity.
After eating, Zaboru and Walt Disney returned to the meeting room, where Roy rejoined them.
"So, Zaboru boy, are you willing to buy 50% of Disney for 700 million dollars?" Walt asked with a grin.
Zaboru nodded confidently. "After discussions at ZAGE, we're ready and willing to purchase 50% of Disney's shares for 700 million dollars, Mr. Disney."
Walt laughed heartily. "Hahaha! Good! Then make sure your lawyer is ready. I bet you'd like an official press conference too, right?"
Zaboru nodded again. "If that's possible, Mr. Disney."
Walt nodded. "I'll make sure it happens. Let's schedule the press conference for the Saturday after the deal goes through. Sound good?"
"Yeah, that's fine, Mr. Disney," Zaboru replied.
Walt continued, "Then on Monday, I'll visit ZAGE USA again with the contracts and we'll finalize everything. Make sure your legal team is prepared by then."
Zaboru gave one last nod. "We'll be ready."
Then Roy Disney smiled and leaned forward, curiosity in his eyes. "Say, Zaboru… what would you do after acquiring 50% of Disney?"
Zaboru paused, tapping his finger thoughtfully against his chin. "Well, first things first—I need to examine the inner structure of Disney's animation teams. I want to know who's working on what, how skilled they are, and what kind of creative muscle they bring to the table. It's important to understand both the strengths and the gaps before making any big moves."
Walt chuckled, folding his arms. "As far as our team's capability goes, don't worry about that. Talent has never been our issue. What we've lacked lately is creativity—fresh ideas, daring stories. That's where we've been falling short."
Roy nodded thoughtfully. "That makes sense. So, how long do you think it would take you to create a quality movie with Disney's resources after the acquisition?"
Zaboru's lips curled into a confident grin. "I'd say… about 17 to 18 months. Maybe sooner if everything clicks."
Walt and Roy both widened their eyes in surprise. "That fast?" Roy asked, almost in disbelief.
Zaboru grinned wider and pointed to his temple. "The concept is already up here, Mr. Disney, Roy. I've had it brewing for months. All I need is to see whether Disney's production team can visualize it the way I imagine. If they can, we're golden."
Walt leaned forward, intrigued. "You already have the story in mind?"
Zaboru nodded. "Every scene, every character, every line of dialogue. What I need is a team that can bring it to life without watering it down. This project isn't just a movie—it's a message. It's about capturing imagination the way Disney used to."
Roy exchanged a glance with Walt. "That's bold, Zaboru. But it's also what we've been missing."
Walt smiled with a glint in his eye. "I like your confidence, boy. Let's see if we can pull this off."
The meeting continued in a warm and relaxed atmosphere, the kind that made Zaboru feel truly comfortable. He much preferred this cozy, home-based discussion over the sterile, high-pressure setting of a luxury suite. The informality made the exchange feel more genuine, reinforcing his belief that he was dealing with people who valued substance over showmanship.
