Chapter 11 - Ch 11: The Sword’s True Edge

Chapter 11: The Sword's True Edge

The cold night wind howled through the desolate mountain pass, its eerie wail filling the air. Wang Lin sat cross-legged on the rocky ground, his sword resting across his lap. The faint light of the crescent moon cast long shadows, but it wasn't the darkness that troubled him. His thoughts were heavy.

Despite the intense battles he had fought and the growth he had undergone since awakening the **Sword God System**, he still felt like he was only scratching the surface of his potential. The immense power the system promised felt distant, out of reach. Even the **Sword Qi** he had unlocked seemed like a mere fraction of what he could achieve.

Nearby, the **female cultivator**, who had been gravely injured in their earlier encounter, lay resting against a boulder. Her breathing was steady now, but the aura around her remained faint. She had been injured, yet her presence—though still mysterious—carried a certain weight. A power hidden beneath her calm exterior. Wang Lin couldn't help but wonder who she truly was and why she was being pursued so relentlessly.

On the other side, **Li Sheng**, the young boy who had unexpectedly joined their group, sat on a nearby rock. His youthful face was contorted with worry as he stared at the sleeping woman. Every now and then, his gaze shifted to Wang Lin, as though seeking reassurance.

"Big Brother Wang, will those bad people come after us again?" Li Sheng asked, his voice small but filled with a kind of innocence that couldn't mask his fear.

Wang Lin, though a young man himself, found a certain protectiveness stirring within him when he looked at Li Sheng. The boy had been through a lot for his age, yet he still held onto his curiosity about the world.

Wang Lin gave a reassuring smile, though his own heart was not at ease. "We'll be fine, Li Sheng. You don't have to worry."

But deep down, Wang Lin knew the danger wasn't over. Not by a long shot. The group of cultivators that had attacked them earlier had been powerful, and the leader—**the scarred man**—was someone Wang Lin knew he wasn't ready to face alone.

As the moments passed in silence, the **Sword God System** suddenly activated with a soft chime, drawing Wang Lin's attention away from his thoughts. A new notification appeared in his mind.

> **[Ding! New Mission: Temper Your Blade]**

> **Objective: Comprehend the essence of the sword through battle.**

> **Reward: Sword Qi Awakening (Initial Stage).**

Wang Lin felt his heart race as the words flashed before him. **Sword Qi Awakening**. If he could master this, his sword would become a force to be reckoned with. It would no longer be a simple weapon—it would be an extension of his very soul. The ability to cut through energy, slice through barriers, and strike down even the most powerful foes would be within his reach.

But how?

Wang Lin had never learned how to access his Sword Qi—he didn't even fully understand what it was. He had been relying on the system's passive abilities and his own growing swordsmanship, but this—this was something new.

"You still seem troubled," the female cultivator said, her voice breaking through his reverie.

Wang Lin turned to face her. Her long, dark hair was tangled from the battle, but there was a quiet strength in her gaze. She had been silent for most of their journey, but now, her eyes were fixed on him.

"I need to understand the essence of the sword," Wang Lin admitted, his tone serious. "Without it, I'll never reach the next level. I won't be able to protect those I care about."

She raised an eyebrow. "The sword is not just about power, boy. A true sword cultivator does not wield the blade—the blade wields them."

Her words struck Wang Lin deeply. **The blade wields them.** What did that mean? Was it about mastery? Or something deeper?

Before he could ask further, Li Sheng suddenly pointed ahead.

"Big Brother Wang! Look!"

Wang Lin's instincts screamed **danger**. He stood swiftly, his hand gripping the hilt of his sword. Emerging from the shadows of the trees, a group of men in dark robes appeared. The leader, **the scarred cultivator**, stepped forward with a twisted grin on his face.

"I've finally found you," he sneered, his voice dripping with malice. His eyes focused on the injured woman. "Hand her over, and I might let you live."

Wang Lin's hand tightened around his sword. "Who are you?" he demanded, his voice calm but firm.

The scarred man's lips curled into a mocking smile. "Just a humble servant of those who want her dead," he said, drawing his blade. "Step aside, brat, or die by my sword."

Li Sheng gasped, his eyes wide with fear. "Big Brother Wang… What do we do?"

Wang Lin glanced at the boy. "Stay behind me, Li Sheng," he said, his voice filled with authority. "I'll protect you."

Li Sheng nodded, but his trembling hands betrayed his fear.

A soft chime sounded in Wang Lin's mind:

> **[Battle Detected! Enemy Cultivation: Foundation Establishment (Peak)]**

> **[Warning: Enemy is stronger than the Host!]**

Wang Lin's mind raced. He was no match for the scarred man—at least, not yet. But he had no choice.

He took a deep breath, clearing his mind. He activated **Heavenly Sword Comprehension**. Instantly, the world around him slowed. His senses sharpened, and his body became light, as if the weight of the world had been lifted. He could feel the **sword's hum**, the energy flowing from it like a living thing.

The scarred man lunged at him with a vicious strike, his sword flashing in the dim light. Wang Lin's heart skipped a beat, but his instincts kicked in. He sidestepped, narrowly avoiding the blade, but the force of the attack sent him skidding backward.

"Too slow!" the enemy shouted, swinging his blade again with overwhelming power.

Wang Lin parried the blow, feeling his arms tremble under the impact. His sword shuddered, but there was something different this time—**his sword was no longer just a weapon**.

It was as though it had its own will. Wang Lin loosened his grip, trusting his blade to move with him, to guide him. He had to **let go**—to trust in the sword, in the very essence of it.

The world seemed to still as Wang Lin's sword shifted. He didn't strike with force, but with **purpose**. The sword moved like an extension of his own soul, cutting through the air with grace and power.

The scarred man's eyes widened in disbelief. "Impossible!"

In one swift motion, Wang Lin's sword struck. His blade sliced through the air, and the scarred man staggered back, clutching his chest. Blood sprayed from the wound, staining the ground beneath them.

"You… brat…!" The man's voice was barely a whisper as he fell to his knees, his sword clattering to the ground.

Li Sheng gasped, his eyes wide with awe. "Big Brother Wang… you're amazing!"

Wang Lin stood tall, his sword humming with newfound energy. He could feel it now—the first trace of **Sword Qi**. It was still faint, still in its infancy, but it was there. And it was only the beginning.

The **Sword God System** chimed again, confirming his growth:

> **[Ding! Sword Qi Awakening (Initial Stage) unlocked!]**

The battle wasn't over yet—there were more enemies lurking in the shadows. But for the first time, Wang Lin felt the true edge of his sword.
