CHAPTER 106
Grace did not rise easily from bed the next morning. Her body couldn't obey. Even with the sun spilling through the tall windows of her chamber, the darkness lingered. She had shouted in the hallway like a madwoman, she had felt Robert's eyes pierce her even when no one else had seen him. And though the court walked on eggshells around her now, she knew they whispered about her in corners.
Robert would not leave her. He is unyielding. His presence clung to her skin like smoke. Why?
There had to be something more. Something she had not uncovered in life.
"Mathew Sterrn," she called, her voice hoarse.
Mathew entered quickly, bowing with practiced precision, though Grace noted the subtle stiffness in his posture.
"Yes, my king."
Grace paced before the window, her hands clasped behind her back. "Do you know why a man haunts another, Mathew?"
Mathew Stern tilted his head. "I cannot say, my king. A tale claim spirits linger for unfinished business."
