"Don't worry," Orion said softly, "I'll—"
Before the words left his mouth, the underbrush exploded around them.
Figures in dark leathers surged from the trees like shadows springing to life — swords, spears, and jagged knives catching the faint gleam of the early morning sun. They moved in silence but with deadly purpose, surrounding the cart from all sides. No hesitation. Only intent.
Bellflower reared with a startled whinny, her hooves thudding against the earth as she pawed at the tension in the air.
"Easy, girl," Orion murmured, grabbing the reins tightly and swiftly maneuvering her in a sharp turn. The cart jerked slightly as he angled her around so that his back shielded Megan and the children, placing himself squarely between the attackers and his family. Bellflower now faced the men behind, while the cart was tucked safely behind Orion.
"Megan," he said, his voice low but firm, "stay in the cart. No matter what happens — do not come down."
