The neon sign outside LUX burned white-gold, the light cutting through the night, it was impossible to ignore the most popular night club in LA.

Inside, the world was different.

Music rolled through the club, deep bass, velvet rhythm, vibrations, chandeliers of fractured crystal hung from a ceiling too high for a mortal venue, refracting light into liquid gold. Marble floors gleamed beneath the slow dance of mortals. Sinners filled the space, laughing, drinking, touching, pretending this place was just another nightclub.

Zatanna paused just inside the entrance.

Her eyes widened despite herself.

"This is…" She searched for the word. "…a lot."

John Constantine smirked around the cigarette he wasn't allowed to light inside.

"First time at a place like this?"

She glanced at him. "First time at this place. I don't think there are many like it."

John chuckled low. "Yeah. There really aren't."

They moved deeper inside, past the bar carved from precious metal and gold. Bartenders who never asked for names. Mirrors that reflected you a bit slower than they should.

Zatanna leaned closer to be heard over the music.

"I wonder how he looks."

John's expression tightened, just for a second.

"I wonder too," he said. "Bastard can be whatever he wants. Wings, horns, light, fire… though he favors one shape here."

She raised a brow. "Which is?"

John exhaled. "The humble owner of the establishment."

As if summoned by the words.

The crowd parted.

Not dramatically, Just… naturally. People stepped aside without knowing why, smiles still on their faces, drinks still in hand.

And then he was there.

Lucifer Morningstar.

He wore a tailored black jacket over an open white shirt, sleeves rolled casually to the forearms. No crown or wings on him. No fire. Just effortless confidence, a beautiful woman clung to his arm, laughing at something he'd whispered, utterly unaware she was leaning against the Devil himself.

His eyes bright and amused fell on John.

Lucifer smiled.

"Well," he said smoothly, "if it isn't John Constantine."

He leaned closer, inspecting him like an old wine.

"You look dreadful."

John snorted. "Missed you too, sunshine."

Lucifer laughed, genuine, delighted and kissed the woman's cheek.

"Darling, run along. I need a moment with an old… associate."

She pouted, then obeyed, already forgetting him the moment she stepped away.

Lucifer's gaze slid to Zatanna.

And softened.

"Well now," he said, offering a flawless smile. "And you must be Zatanna Zatara."

She stiffened slightly, but met his eyes without fear.

"..I am."

"Charming," Lucifer said, taking her hand and kissing it with theatrical grace. "Truly. Your father spoke of you often."

John fronwed. "Don't."

Lucifer glanced back at him. "Oh, relax. I meant it fondly."

Zatanna withdrew her hand, polite but wary. "This is… quite the place."

Lucifer spread his arms. "A sanctuary. No Hell. No Heaven. No rules but my own. Music, pleasure, honesty." His eyes gleamed. "And lies, of course. They're more fun usually."

John leaned against the bar. "I didn't come to party, Lucy."

Lucifer's smile sharpened.

"No?" He tilted his head. "Then why come at all, Johnny?"

John held his gaze. "You know damn well why."

Lucifer circled him slowly, hands in pockets. "Do I? Because from where I'm standing, Hell is no longer my problem. I retired. Left the key behind. Was very clear about it."

"And now it's spilling over," John shot back. "Demons getting restless. Boundaries thinning. And Earth is feeling the itch."

Lucifer stopped inches from him.

"Sounds like Hell's problem," he said lightly.

Zatanna stepped in. "People will suffer."

Lucifer looked at her again, something unreadable flickering behind the charm.

"People always suffer, this is nothing new my dear."

John clenched his jaw. "You walked away, mate. Fine. But don't pretend you don't care, I know you hear it all."

Lucifer leaned close, voice dropping, dangerous now.

"Oh, I hear everything. I simply choose what deserves my attention."

Silence stretched between them.

Then Lucifer smiled again easy, infuriating.

"But," he said, stepping back, "you didn't really come here for me to change my mind, did you?"

John froze.

Lucifer's gaze flicked, not to the door but to the shadows lingering at the edge of the club, where light seemed hesitant to settle.

"No," John admitted. "But you're part of it whether you like it or not, and I want some answers."

Lucifer chuckled softly.

"Oh, Johnny… trouble does adore you."

He lifted a glass, eyes glinting with mischief.

"So," he said smoothly, "shall we talk business… or would you prefer to enjoy the music first?"

****

They had claimed a secluded booth near the back of LUX, where the music softened just enough to allow actual conversation, and where the shadows lingered longer than they should. A low table of black glass sat between them, already adorned with drinks that no bartender had brought.

Lucifer lounged with effortless grace, one arm draped along the back of the seat, swirling liquid in a crystal glass. John sat opposite to him, shoulders tense despite the casual slouch he tried to sell. Zatanna sat beside John, composed but alert, eyes taking in everything.

Lucifer spoke first "If you want my help," he said lightly, eyes never leaving John's face, "you'll have to do something for me first."

John didn't even blink.

"Not about to do that. No thank you."

Lucifer burst out laughing, head tipping back.

"Oh relax, Johnny. I'm joking."

He leaned forward, elbows on the table now, suddenly more serious, but not less amused.

"Fine. I'll offer you a solid service. I'll save you time, precious time you'd otherwise waste bleeding on sigils, chanting yourself hoarse, and pretending your brand of magic doesn't take years off your life."

John narrowed his eyes.

"I'll leave the passage open," Lucifer continued, unbothered. "As long as you like. Enter Hell, exit Hell. Cleanly. No tolls and no surprises." He lifted a finger. "But only once."

Zatanna inhaled sharply.

Lucifer glanced at her, smile softening.

"And I'm doing it solely because I don't want to disappoint the pretty lady sitting next to you."

Zatanna blinked, genuinely surprised.

"That would… actually save us a great deal of power and time." She inclined her head. "Thank you."

Lucifer gave her a gracious nod.

John said nothing.

Lucifer studied him for a long moment, then tilted his head.

"John… is it just me, or are you completely clueless today?"

John frowned.

"What are you playing at now?"

Lucifer's eyes flicked downward.

"My," he murmured, amusement fading into sharp focus. "You really are losing your touch."

He reached out, fingers hovering near John's shoulder then stopped. His eyes narrowed.

"Uh oh."

John stiffened.

"…Uh oh what?"

The lights above them flickered once.

Then John's shadow moved.

It peeled away from his feet.

Zatanna shot to her feet.

"John.."

The shadow stretched, thickened, rising like smoke. Violet light bled through its edges.

John exhaled slowly.

"Oh. Right. I get it now."

Lucifer laughed, delighted.

"Parasite," he said cheerfully. "Riding you like a bus."

Zatanna whispered, eyes fixed on the forming silhouette.

"Arthur…"

The shadow solidified.

Ashen-white hair.

Violet eyes glowing.

Shadows folding back into a long coat that seemed woven from night itself.

Arthur Blackwynd stepped forward as if he had always been there.

Behind him, Kara appeared, arms crossed.

The air changed.

The music didn't stop, but it felt farther away. Conversations dulled.

Lucifer rose slowly from his seat.

Red eyes met violet.

For a moment, neither spoke.

John broke the tension with a dry snort.

"Ever heard of consent, Arthur?"

Lucifer glanced at him.

"You cannot talk like that with your life record, John."

Arthur didn't look away from Lucifer.

"Don't mind him." Lucifer smiled wide and genuine, and extended a hand.

"I believe this is our first proper meeting. A formal introduction is in order."

He inclined his head slightly.

"My name is Lucifer. Lucifer Morningstar."

Arthur studied him. Those red eyes. That ancient confidence. Then he reached out and shook his hand.

The contact sent a ripple through the shadows, subtle, almost imperceptible but the booth's reflections warped for a fraction of a second.

"Arthur Blackwynd," he said calmly. "Pleased to meet you."

Lucifer's smile sharpened with interest.

He turned to Kara.

"And you must be the Kryptonian. Charming entourage you keep."

Kara raised a brow.

"Thanks."

Lucifer chuckled.

"Let me guess, John dragged you all into this mess so you could fix it for him."

Arthur replied evenly,

"A mess he wouldn't be in if you hadn't abandoned your throne."

Lucifer laughed outright,

"Oh, I walked away from a job that demanded obedience without gratitude. Eternity is far too long for unpaid labor."

Arthur said nothing.

Lucifer's gaze lingered on him.

"Well, Arthur… if you've agreed to help John, he might yet survive his latest brilliant mistake. Your abilities will certainly make things… efficient."

Arthur's eyes flicked up.

"You know of my powers?"

Lucifer laughed again, softer this time.

"Oh please. I'll pretend that question was rhetorical."

He leaned closer.

"Everyone knows of you. Just as you are aware of far more than you let on."

Arthur accepted the silence.

Lucifer snapped his fingers. A new glass appeared before Arthur, dark liquid swirling with faint starlight.

"A drink," Lucifer offered, red eyes glowing faintly.

"I get the sense you and I are kindred spirits. Very similar, in ways even I find difficult to articulate."

John, Zatanna, and Kara watched the exchange silent now, wary, witnessing something that felt larger than the room.

Arthur took the glass.

He met Lucifer's gaze.

"Maybe you are right." he said.

The glasses clinked softly.
