The Watchtower shook, shattering as the two monsters slammed into one another. Doom and Black Lantern Doomsday were titans locked in endless combat, shadows and rot tearing into each other with mountain-shattering force, each strike threatened to bring the station down.
Raven's violet eyes gleamed, her new ring pulsing in rhythm with her heartbeat. She extended her hand, her focus narrowing into a single command.
"Azarath… Metrion…" she whispered, then clenched her fist, her power latching onto the ring's cold strength.
J'onn said "You know that..."
Raven cut him off and said, "I know, force of habit."
Chains erupted. Shackles of shadow forged constructs around Doomsday's limbs, binding him mid-swing. Thick restraints like blackened iron clamps crushed against his chest. The beast snarled, thrashing against her work then, with one violent jerk, the shackles snapped like brittle twigs.
Before the massive spike could rend her in two, Doom stepped in, his own titanic hand catching Doomsday by the jaw and slamming him back with bone-rattling force. The deck plates cratered beneath them, sparks flying in showers of silver.
Raven's brow furrowed, teeth clenched in frustration.
"They're too fragile," she muttered under her breath.
"They are only as strong as your imagination," J'onn's voice cut into her mind, calm and steady despite the destruction around him.
Raven turned sharply toward him, her voice tight with annoyance. "I know!"
J'onn replied. "Then focus. Breathe. If you want your constructs to hold, your focus must be sharper than anything else. Picture what he cannot break."
She glared at him, but the truth in his words dug deeper than her pride or embarassment. Her breath came heavy, then steadied. Doom was still grappling Doomsday, massive shadow spikes sunk into the monster's face, straining to keep his snapping jaws from reaching Raven. She couldn't waste that chance.
Exhaling slow, Raven raised her hand again. This time the ring responded, its glow flaring brighter, feeding off her sharpened intent.
The shadows stretched outward, folding into form, winged beasts of nightmare, a storm of massive raven-like entities, their feathers black fire, their eyes glowing violet. They shrieked as one, diving onto Black Lantern Doomsday, swarming him like carrion birds around a corpse. Their wings wrapped tight, talons sinking deep, every flap and shriek pressing against his corrupted flesh, pinning him in place.
Doom moved instantly. The moment the beasts seized hold, he roared and drove his fists into Doomsday's skull, a barrage of titanic punches that cracked bone, split his hide, and shook the Watchtower to its core. Each strike sounded like an earthquake.
The Black Lantern Doomsady tore through the constructs with his claws, ripping one, then another, shadowy feathers scattering like ash, yet with every shred, they reformed, reattaching themselves, screeching louder, binding tighter.
Raven's body trembled with strain. Sweat beaded down her temples, her breath hitching. The glow of her ring flickered with each heartbeat, too bright, too alive.
"This isn't enough," she whispered, her voice breaking. "Arthur said the ring is the one in control."
Her words hung, raw and uncertain, until J'onn's gaze locked on hers. His tone was low.
"I see. Then don't waste time and energy. Use it. Direct your attacks where it matters." He pointed toward the writhing monster's chest, where beneath decayed flesh and bone, a glow pulsed faintly. "There, the heart of its power. The ring buried deep. Strike there."
Raven swallowed hard, her eyes flicking from J'onn to the beast, then to her own trembling hands. The violet glow of her ring brightened again, like a heartbeat demanding her answer.
And despite the uncertainty, she tightened her fist, her violet glow intensified. Her eyes burned brighter than ever her voice carrying authority.
"Doom! don't let him move. Tear his chest open. Now!"
The shadow-beast obeyed instantly. Doom roared, the sound reverberating like an earthquake, and lunged forward. His massive clawed hand clamped around Black Lantern Doomsday's throat, squeezing with a bone-snapping force. The undead monster thrashed, snarling, his jagged teeth snapping toward Doom's face, but the shadow was unyielding.
J'onn's voice came calm but firm through the chaos. "Let me help."
Before Raven could question, the Martian blurred, his form phasing into intangibility as he dove through both colossal figures. Emerging from within the undead beast, his body solidified, and with every ounce of his will he seized Doomsday's arms. Green veins of psychic power strained visibly across his body as he forced them down, locking the monster in place.
Doom tilted his head, confused for a moment at the assistance, but quickly adapted. With a guttural growl, he released Doomsday's throat and shifted his grip lower. His massive hands pressed against the creature's chest, claws sinking in, and with a savage roar Doom wrenched outward.
Flesh and bone split with a nauseating crack. Black ichor spilled as Doom pried apart the ribcage, holding it wide open against the monster's regenerative will. The corpse fought to mend itself instantly, tendrils of dark flesh trying to knit together, but Doom's raw strength was a wall against it, Shadow muscles and spikes bulging as he forced the cavity open.
And there it was. The glow. Deep in the sundered chest, pulsing like the heart of some foul god, the Black Ring. Its baleful light flickered violently, fighting to keep Doomsday whole.
J'onn's usually calm composure broke as he shouted, his voice echoing with rare desperation. "Now, Raven! Destroy it!"
Raven's breath caught in her throat. Her body trembled, sweat running cold down her face, but her eyes flared into violet fire. Raising her hand, the ring answered with a violent hum, its light bleeding into the darkness of the chamber.
She exhaled sharply. "Azarath… Metrion… Zinthos!"
Her words cut into a scream as a torrent of dark-violet energy burst from her ring. The blast ripped through the air like a judgment, striking the black ring dead center. The ring pulsed, resisted, its surface writhing like liquid shadow, then cracks began to spiderweb across it, glowing violently.
Black Lantern Doomsday let out an unearthly shriek, more primal and horrific than any roar before. Doom dug his claws in deeper, snarling, holding the ribcage open as if daring the universe itself to resist. J'onn gritted his teeth, his muscles trembling as he kept the monster's arms pinned.
The cracks spread faster. The ring screamed. And then
Shatter.
The black ring exploded in a blinding flash, sending out a shockwave of dark energy. The force blasted J'onn and Raven off their feet, hurling them across the chamber. Panels burst from the walls, sparks showered the air.
And yet Doom stood firm. The shadow-beast planted his massive feet, braced his body, and simply brought his hands together in a thunderous clap that cut through the ringing silence. The motion was almost… casual.
Black Lantern Doomsday's body convulsed once, twice, then collapsed like a broken puppet. His corpse hit the floor with a grotesque, wet thud. The flesh was warped, cracked, seared by the violet blast. No regeneration stirred this time. No ring pulsed to reanimate him. He was gone.
Truly lifeless.
Raven groaned as she pushed herself up, her chest heaving, her new uniform dimly glowing with violet threads. J'onn phased halfway out of the floor, wincing as he pulled himself upright. Both stared at the body.
It was over.
Doom, unbothered, lowered his head toward the fallen monster, then gave another echoing clap, like an executioner sealing the judgment. His glowing violet eyes swept toward Raven and J'onn, as if awaiting the next command.
J'onn's face softened, awe flickering beneath the calm. "Incredible power..."
Raven's lips curved faintly, though her voice was hoarse. "That's my man for you.."
But even as she spoke, she glanced down at her ring, its glow pulsing against her skin. Her hands were still trembling. Then her body gave out first. Her shoulders sagged, her knees buckled, and the violet glow that had burned so furiously in her eyes guttered out. The ring's aura still burned bright, flickering faintly as she swayed, chest rising and falling with ragged breaths. Her lips parted as if to say something, but only a dry gasp came out.
She tilted forward falling.
But before her body could meet the cracked metal floor, a massive, clawed shadowed hand shot forward and caught her gently. Doom. The monster's hulking form lowered with surprising care, his arm cradling her against his chest as though she were a fragile thing of glass instead of a powerful sorceress and a child of a demon.
J'onn, still kneeling from the strain of his telepathic and physical exertion, watched with something close to awe. His Martian mind had seen countless forms of strength but rarely had he seen a creature of pure destruction handle another being with such care and… restraint.
"The shadows," he murmured, voice low and reverent, "carry the will of their master.."
