Chapter 11: Tyrants, Angels, and Absolute Monsters

Class C and Class B both had their leaders decided, which left only Class A — the one said to have the strongest overall ability.

Comparing Class C and Class B, the difference in their styles was striking. But no matter which approach they took, both were clearly far ahead of Class D.

When it came to information about the school, the rules, the points, and even the class rankings, Chabashira-sensei had barely explained anything to Class D. Even so, Hikigaya Hachiman could already sense that this school was not nearly as simple as it appeared.

Tyrants, angels… and monsters? Just what kind of existence was waiting in Class A?

Ichinose Honami: "I never thought I'd be observed right on the first day of school."

Rokusen Rokusen (Rokusen → Rokusen??? maybe Rokusen was mis-MTL? keep Ryuuen?): "So she can sense it, but I couldn't…?"

Sakayanagi: "That's natural, Dragon Boy. Prey rarely notices the harmless hunter."

Ryuuen: "Prey? Hah! Don't make me laugh. More often than not, the prey is the one disguised as a hunter. Don't think for a second that I'd lose to you, Miss Wheelchair."

The tension among Classes A, B, and C was already crackling, while Class D students could only stare at the boy in the recording with disbelief. On the very first day of school, he was already investigating the other classes.

Sudo: "No way. Who would go out of their way to do that on day one?"

Ryuuen: "And yet even a fool thinks his opinion matters. How pitiful."

Sudo slammed the desk in frustration, looking like he'd storm straight to Class C for payback. But unlike before, he wasn't the same reckless Sudo who had just enrolled. After venting his anger, he managed to calm himself down.

---

Under normal circumstances, Hikigaya wouldn't even dream of doing something as troublesome as poking around in other people's classrooms. Normally, he'd just head back to the dorm right after school and call it a day.

But things were different now. He had too many doubts, and this school was nothing like the ordinary high school it claimed to be. If he didn't start answering those doubts, he wouldn't be able to settle down.

What exactly was the truth behind this school?

That thought kept gnawing at him as he walked. Class D seemed completely in the dark, while Classes B and C already knew things they shouldn't.

Hikigaya shoved his hands into his pockets as he strolled down the hallway. The number plates told him Class A's room was just ahead.

Strangely, unlike the noisy discussions in Class B and Class C, not a single sound came from Class A's room.

Had they already disbanded?

Or was it absolute discipline?

Before Hikigaya could take another step closer, someone blocked his way.

It was a girl with a ponytail, her school uniform tightly fitted and her arms crossed as she glared at him.

Kamuro: "What are you doing here? Which class are you from?"

Hikigaya didn't flinch. He gave a simple, almost foolish answer: "Looking for the bathroom. I'm a freshman with no friends — getting lost is pretty normal, right?"

Her eyes sharpened, like she was trying to see through the lie.

But the truth was, Hikigaya really had been wandering around the building while looking for information. In a sense, what he said wasn't entirely false.

The best lies are always half-truths.

"…I'm in Class 1-D," he added.

At that, Kamuro's tense expression softened, and even the corner of her mouth twitched upward slightly. Of course, Hikigaya noticed it all.

"It seems this class ranking system isn't based on strength alone…"

From what he'd seen, the higher-ranked classes had access to more information and seemed far more aware of the school's true nature. And none of them had been dazzled by the 100,000 points. Did those points have some hidden purpose?

Class A was right in front of him, but since he had already been turned away, he had no choice but to retreat.

Still, one thing was clear — Class A was far more terrifying than he had imagined. If nothing else, their leader had likely already been chosen. And unlike B or C, Class A's leader would be an absolute power, capable of commanding unquestioned authority.

Kamuro continued staring at him, arms still crossed. When she confirmed he was from Class D, she relaxed slightly.

"Anyway, the bathroom isn't here. Turn around."

She paused before adding: "And don't try anything funny. Otherwise… Sakayanagi won't forgive you."

"…How many times have I been pushed around today?" Hikigaya muttered. "But… Sakayanagi, huh?"

He gave a slight nod, then turned and walked away without looking back.

On his way out, he memorized the classroom layout and the positions of the cameras as if sketching a map in his mind.

Once outside, he exhaled softly.

"Guess I'll head to the convenience store and grab a few things first."
