Chapter 273 - Chapter 273: Acts of Rebellion

Despised by everyone, Dolores Umbridge might not be much to look at, but she certainly had delusions of grandeur.

Constantly envisioning herself as the queen of Hogwarts, she hummed a tune while counting the number of students present for the morning study session.

Unfortunately for her, Jane Yu had no intention of letting that dream come true.

Previously, Jane had outright refused to attend any gathering involving Umbridge and blatantly ignored all punishment options.

Yet, Umbridge seemed to revel in the joy of ruling the school, delaying any expulsion notice indefinitely.

Left with no other choice, Jane launched an attack on Umbridge's office during the morning study session, releasing multiple Periculum explosions while yanking down every single one of Umbridge's treasured cat plates from the walls.

She also swapped her wizard robes for what the student regulations deemed "inappropriate attire," intending to give Umbridge a shocking dose of Muggle fashion.

"It seems we're missing someone today. Does anyone know where Miss Jane Yu might be?"

In the repurposed Great Hall, now serving as a study room, Umbridge stood by the Slytherin table with a saccharine smile plastered on her face, questioning the students.

"She... Why are you so concerned about her?" Warrington and Montague exchanged a quick glance, then hurriedly diverted her attention with exaggerated flattery. "We might get jealous! You're working so hard; we're all worried about your health—"

The two even presented a plate adorned with animated Persian cats, wrapped with ribbons, as a gift for Umbridge.

Though their faces were all smiles, internally they were as anxious as ants on a hot pan.

After all, Umbridge had announced that if Jane didn't show up soon, expulsion would be her only fate.

"Oh, you two are so thoughtful." Umbridge beamed, her voice dripping with sweetness. "Although, as Senior Undersecretary, I shouldn't accept gifts, since this comes from my favorite students, I'll hang it in my office."

Warrington and Montague continued their elaborate compliments, trying to keep her distracted and drag out the morning study session as long as possible.

Their over-the-top flattery left every student in the hall rolling their eyes, casting disdainful looks their way and snickering quietly.

Meanwhile, the other three house tables erupted with boos and jeers, signaling that the duo's reputation was thoroughly ruined.

But no matter how much Umbridge laughed and swayed, her attention eventually returned to her thorn in the side.

"Mr. Warrington, Mr. Montague, I appoint you as my secretaries to temporarily manage order here." Her face turned cold. "I need to deal with this rule-breaking student—"

Before she could finish, the tightly shut doors of the Great Hall were blasted open with a deafening bang.

The loud noise drew everyone's gaze to the entrance, where they saw the figure standing behind the doors—

It was none other than Jane Yu!

But their astonishment had never been greater, for she was dressed in a loose white T-shirt, the kind only Muggles would wear, slouching casually on her frame. Her lower half sported a pair of heavily distressed jeans with several large rips, the cuffs rolled up to reveal her ankles. A colorful headband adorned her forehead, her hair tied into a high ponytail, and she wore a baseball cap tilted jauntily on her head.

As for the jewelry and accessories banned by the school rules, her body was practically draped in them: oversized hoop earrings dangled from her ears, seven or eight gold chains of varying thickness crisscrossed around her neck, swaying and clinking as she walked. Her wrists were adorned with four or five jangling bracelets, and a pair of sunglasses perched on her nose, obscuring most of her face, leaving only her slightly upturned lips to convey her disdain for Umbridge.

With her hands in her pockets and an air of confidence, she strode in, trailed by a floating collection of cat plates, as if she feared no opponent.

Her outfit was a stark contrast to the black standard wizard robes worn by everyone else in the hall.

In fact, even before Umbridge's strict dress code, wizards typically opted for various styles of refined robes rather than adopting a Muggle appearance. Even to Muggle-born students, her outfit was cutting-edge.

This left everyone gaping, some curious, some incredulous, and others finding it absurdly surreal.

Perhaps their thoughts varied, but one sentiment was shared—

Amidst their chaotic thoughts was a hidden admiration for her defiance, her breaking of rules, and her courage to stand against Umbridge.

"Wow—awesome—!"

The equally rebellious Weasley twins were the first to whistle, sparking a wave of applause and animated discussions.

"You know, we have so many pop stars back home!" Muggle-born students eagerly shared the artistic flair of her outfit with those around them. "They love strutting the streets in cool outfits like that—!"

While wizard-born students might not fully understand, most chose to respect her bold statement and quickly caught on.

"This is so moving!" Ron exclaimed, grabbing Harry's arm so tightly it made him wince. "She's... she's a Slytherin, and yet she dressed like a Muggle, defying her house's norms to stand up to Umbridge—Merlin, that's Jane for you!"

"Umbridge is going to lose it!" "Do you think she'll be expelled?" "This is my favorite Jane moment!" "She's broken at least fifty school rules!"...

Laughter and cheers buzzed through the hall, sparking some introspection among the students.

"I'm so ashamed." Hermione bit her lip and suddenly covered her face with her hands. "I'm from a Muggle family, yet I didn't stand up like Jane to oppose a pure-blood supremacist professor with cruel methods."

Her words brought a hush over the Muggle-born and half-blood students around her, who had been the main targets of recent punishments.

Meanwhile, the Slytherin students furrowed their brows, but their discontent wasn't directed at Jane—it was aimed at Umbridge.

To force a proud Slytherin wizard to dress like a Muggle to protest the injustice she faced—

It filled them with a profound sense of their own powerlessness in the face of authority, a mix of guilt, anger, frustration, and pain swirling within them.

"Merlin—look what she's done to Jane!" Daphne wiped her tear-filled eyes, visibly upset. "I was wondering why she disappeared, but now I see—she was driven to dress like a Muggle to fight back—"

"This is all Umbridge's fault." Theodore's icy tone carried suppressed hatred. "Jane is standing up for all of us!"

"I feel humiliated." Blaise clenched his fists. "I don't know why, but I feel an overwhelming urge to hit something—"

And Draco was muttering under his breath, seemingly drafting a letter of complaint to his father in his mind.

Amidst the cacophony of voices, Jane removed her sunglasses and locked eyes with Umbridge.

In that moment, she saw the smile vanish from Umbridge's face, along with the pleasure of dominating others and humiliating students. What replaced it was the fury of having her authority challenged, the helplessness of losing control, and the undisguised hatred for this thorn in her side.

It was exactly what Jane wanted to see.

She waved her hand, and the collection of cat plates floated above Umbridge's head.

"What are you doing?" Umbridge's sharp voice betrayed her panic. "I'm warning you, put them down, or you'll be expelled! How dare you sneak into my office and destroy my treasures—"

Jane smiled faintly as the plates lost their magical support, crashing to the ground in a cacophony of shattering porcelain. The sharp fragments left small cuts on Umbridge's exposed skin and face, making her clutch her face and scream in pain.

"Alright, I put them down, Professor."

"No—!" Umbridge threw herself to the ground, writhing her plump body as she tried to gather the fragments.

She seemed to forget she was a witch, her stubby wand discarded on the floor as she used her hands to collect the shards.

With a flick of her fingers, Jane kindly made the fragments and powder disappear, leaving the hall spotless.

"I'm a good student, after all," she shrugged. "How could I let a professor clean up?"

Umbridge let out another shriek, her disbelieving eyes scanning the floor.

After a minute, she slowly rose, her eyes bloodshot, the cuts on her face glaringly visible, making her resemble a vengeful villain about to unleash her ultimate attack.

Jane had never seen such intense hatred in someone's eyes, as if Umbridge wanted to tear her apart.

For the first time, Umbridge's girlishly sweet voice turned coarse and raspy:

"Jane Yu, you are expelled."
