Chapter 11: The First Note

The MC's voice boomed over the speakers, a theatrical growl that made the crowd roar. "Gentlemen, tonight we have a special vintage. Straight from the heart of the flame. Please welcome... The Girl in Red!" The music shifted from a frantic beat to a slow, haunting melody—a heavy bassline accompanied by a mournful saxophone. It was the kind of music that demanded attention without begging for it. Anita gave Eliana a final, firm push. "Go. Save her."

Eliana stepped out onto the stage. The spotlights were blinding, white-hot circles that turned the audience into a sea of featureless shadows. She couldn't see their faces, but she could feel their eyes. The silence that fell over the room was heavy, a vacuum of sound as the men processed the vision in front of them. Eliana stood frozen for a heartbeat, her hands gripping the cold metal of the pole at the center of the stage. She felt the heat of the lamps, the weight of the silk, and the suffocating pressure of a thousand expectations.

Then, she remembered the village. She remembered the way the dust rose when the wind blew through their small kitchen. She remembered her mother's hand, thin and papery, reaching for hers. I am doing this for you, Mama. She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding and moved. It wasn't a stripper's dance—not yet. It was a slow, swaying lament. Her body moved with the saxophone, fluid and graceful, a dance of sorrow disguised as seduction.
