Chapter 62 - Chapter 62: Second Defeat

At the very last moment, just as all hope seemed lost, Kaka summoned the last of his strength to land a final blow. Even knowing defeat was inevitable, he refused to let anyone walk away unscathed—not even the mighty Vespiquen!

With eyes glowing ever brighter, Kaka focused every last ounce of his power. The previously broken threads of his aura reappeared in his fading vision. Though his consciousness began to fade, his body moved purely by the will to fight. One final slash landed across Vespiquen's unguarded waist, sending the powerful queen bee crashing from the sky.

Through his blurred vision, Kaka saw Vespiquen lying on the ground beside him—also downed. Only then did he finally close his tired eyes.

I'm still too weak…

Kaka lost consciousness. Vespiquen was declared the victor.

But neither Vespiquen nor Everette, who stood by watching, could hide their shock. Vespiquen was incredibly strong—how had Kaka, a mere Farfetch'd, managed to wound her at all?

Vespiquen stared in disbelief at Kaka's unconscious body. Is this really just a Farfetch'd?

She touched her still-throbbing waist. Had Kaka been just a bit stronger, that strike might've seriously injured her.

What a terrifying ability!

That strike—she hadn't even had the chance to dodge!

Everette stepped forward and knelt beside Kaka, examining him carefully.

"What a fascinating Beast. Despite being a Normal-type, he possesses innate Psychic abilities. That last blow—it had to be enhanced by psychic energy."

Gabriel retrieved Kaka using his Poké Ball and gave Everette a small nod.

"Yes. Kaka's potential is extraordinary. If he can master that power fully, he could transcend the limits of his species."

Everette nodded in admiration, staring at the BeastBall (PokéBall) in Gabriel's hand with open envy.

"A Beast with that kind of potential… I wish I'd been the one to meet him."

Gabriel ignored Everette's wistful tone and gently stroked Kaka's PokéBall.

"You did your best, Kaka. The opponent was simply too strong. I underestimated Everette's capabilities… That was my mistake."

Then Gabriel took out another Poké Ball.

"Dratini, come out."

With a flash, Dratini emerged.

"Our plan has failed. Even holding back, that Vespiquen was still beyond us."

Dratini nodded solemnly. He had felt it too—Kaka had never been hurt this badly before. The enemy's strength was overwhelming.

Just standing there, Dratini could sense Vespiquen's sheer power. Kaka went up against that? And even managed to wound her?!

That thought sparked a fire in Dratini's eyes.

If even my little brother could land a hit on her, how can I, his big bro, fall behind?

Gabriel, watching from the sidelines, sensed Dratini's intense fighting spirit and smiled once more.

"That's it, Dratini. Even if we're destined to lose, we'll show them what we're made of! Dynamax!!"

Gabriel pressed the button on his wristband. A thick purple mist exploded across the battlefield as energy surged forth. Dratini inhaled deeply, and in the blink of an eye, the mist enveloped him. When it cleared, a colossal figure stood in his place.

Vespiquen felt the overwhelming pressure radiating from Dynamax Dratini and let out a weary sigh.

Everette… You always make me do the heavy lifting. And now you're telling me to hold back against this monster? Are you trying to kill me?!

"Dratini, use Dragon Rage!"

The giant Dratini opened his massive jaws and unleashed a torrent of blue flame. Though Dragon Rage was typically a single-target move, under the effects of Dynamax, it became a sweeping area attack.

The arena was engulfed in blue fire. Even Vespiquen couldn't avoid the blast. Dratini kept his eyes locked on her silhouette within the inferno. Take this head-on, and even you won't walk away unscathed…

As the flames subsided, Vespiquen's form emerged from the blue haze—completely unharmed.

"BZZZZZ!"

Three Combee hovered protectively around her, generating a shimmering energy barrier that had nullified the attack entirely.

Defense Order!

Seeing Vespiquen untouched, Dratini swung his massive tail in frustration. Let's see you block this—Dragon Tail!

Gone was Vespiquen's earlier laziness. Her eyes sharpened as she vanished in a flash, avoiding the strike completely.

But her movement had taken her into Dratini's blind spot. By the time his tail hit the ground, she was already gone.

Where is she?!

"She's behind you! Use Electroweb!"

Startled, Dratini immediately launched a burst of electrical webs behind him. Despite the wild aim, the sheer size and strength of Dynamax energy allowed him to carpet the area—Vespiquen had nowhere to run.

"Slice him down."

For the first time, Everette gave a command.

To Gabriel and Dratini's shock, Vespiquen's claws lit up and tore through the Electroweb in one swift slash. The residual force from the attack knocked Dynamax Dratini clean across the battlefield, slamming him into the far wall with a thunderous crash.

Dazed and furious, Dratini glared at Vespiquen.

Think you're fast, huh?!

Extreme Speed!

With a sudden burst, Dynamax Dratini darted forward and lunged at Vespiquen with his jaws wide open. But when he bit down—nothing.

…?!

A chill crept up the back of his neck.

No way… again?!

Before he could react, Vespiquen appeared behind him. Her claws struck the back of his head with devastating force. Dratini was thrown to the ground, reverting to normal size as he lost consciousness.

Gabriel recalled Dratini to his Poké Ball, watching Vespiquen—still full of energy—with a helpless expression.

So this… is what it means to be a Gym Leader.

He looked down at the Poké Balls holding Kaka and Dratini.

Can we really defeat someone like her…?

Vespiquen floated over, looking at Gbariel with wide, innocent eyes.

(Don't look at me like that—it wasn't my idea! Everette told me to fight!)

The timid queen bee practically threw Everette under the bus. The last thing she wanted was for kind-hearted Gabriel to misunderstand her—after all, all her Poké Puffs came from him, and she knew it!

Gabriel could only shake his head with a tired smile.

"It's alright. This was my challenge. We lost because we weren't strong enough… But one day—we'll grow stronger."
