Chapter 148 - CHAPTER 148: Sacred Grounds.

"Get back!" Talia ordered sharply, her command sending the surrounding assassins retreating without hesitation. Even as she spoke, her gaze shifted toward her sister, silently questioning her with a look that needed no words.

Jason Todd wasted no time.

The instant the nearest assassin leaped backward to create distance, he surged after them with a powerful strike meant to end the fight before it could continue. Yet something was wrong.

His body didn't respond the way it always had.

His movements felt noticeably slower, the explosive speed and overwhelming strength he had relied upon dulled just enough for the assassin to evade the attack. Seizing the opportunity, the League operative vaulted away and landed several paces from Talia, settling into a guarded stance like a disciplined chess piece awaiting its next command.

Jason's brow knitted together as he instinctively looked down at his own arms. His limbs felt unnaturally heavy, every movement carrying an unfamiliar sluggishness that immediately put him on guard.

'Nadia's attack…'

The realization settled in almost instantly.

Already understanding the question forming in Talia's mind, Nadia calmly answered before her sister could even ask.

"He must've held his breath," she observed. "Even so, direct exposure without protective equipment should still be enough for the gas to take effect."

"Which means..." Talia continued, effortlessly piecing the situation together, "...it's simply taking longer to circulate because of his absurd physicality."

Nadia answered with a small, confirming nod.

"So... that's how it is," Jason muttered, his voice carrying placid realization rather than panic.

He forced one foot forward, determined to keep fighting.

The moment his weight shifted—

His leg gave out.

Tood dropped heavily onto one knee.

The assassin he'd attacked maintained a cautious fighting stance, refusing to close the distance despite Jason's obvious weakening condition. Around them, both Talia and Nadia remained equally vigilant. Neither sister entertained the idea of engaging him at close range. Even with his strength visibly slipping away, Jason Todd was still far too dangerous to underestimate.

His vision suddenly wavered.

For a brief moment, everything dissolved into a haze before struggling back into focus. He blinked hard, staring at the figures standing before him through increasingly heavy eyelids. The world blurred once more as an overwhelming wave of exhaustion washed over him, dragging at both his body and mind until even remaining conscious became a battle.

Seeing there was no longer any immediate threat, Talia finally turned toward the exit.

"Have the others clean this up," she ordered calmly. "Move him, and begin preparing him for our journey."

Without waiting for a response, she continued walking.

"We leave at once."

Nadia followed silently behind as the surrounding assassins immediately moved to carry out their orders.

The helicopter gradually descended onto a snow-covered clearing high within the mountains, its spinning rotors whipping loose snow into the frigid air before finally slowing to a halt. The moment the aircraft settled, Talia and Nadia stepped out into the biting mountain wind, followed closely by an assassin carrying the unconscious Jason Todd slung effortlessly over one shoulder.

Nadia raised a hand and pointed toward the mountainous landscape stretching out ahead.

"That's our destination."

Both sisters turned their attention in the indicated direction, carefully surveying the seemingly endless expanse of snow-covered cliffs and jagged rock formations. Aside from towering mountain walls and uneven hills blanketed in white, there wasn't the slightest indication that anyone could possibly live there.

"Do those mountain walls lead into some kind of cave system?" Talia wondered aloud, her sharp eyes sweeping across every ridge and rocky outcrop in search of anything that looked remotely artificial. "Or are they hidden somewhere within the mountain itself?"

She paused briefly, allowing another gust of icy wind to sweep past before continuing, her voice rising just enough to carry over the howling breeze.

"That would certainly explain why they're so difficult to find... and why so many people consider them little more than a myth."

"Not entirely," Nadia replied as she began walking forward with slow, deliberate steps toward what appeared to be nothing more than a snow-covered mountainside. "But you're not far off."

The others followed without question, their boots crunching softly against the fresh snow as they advanced toward what looked like a complete dead end.

"Unlike the League," Nadia continued, "the All-Caste has little interest in the outside world. They neither seek to influence it nor involve themselves in its affairs unless circumstances leave them with no other choice."

"That explains the bad blood between the two."

The closer they drew to the seemingly solid mountainside, the more difficult it became to believe there was anything hidden beyond it at all.

Having reached the end of the narrow mountain path, Nadia didn't so much as hesitate. She continued forward at the same measured pace, her body passing straight through what appeared to be nothing more than an unbroken wall of stone.

The sight drew the attention of the soldier carrying Jason over his shoulder. His grip instinctively tightened before his gaze shifted toward Talia. She simply met his eyes and gave a reassuring nod.

Taking her cue from her sister's earlier demonstration, Talia stepped forward. Her outstretched hand was the first to meet the mountainside, only for it to slip effortlessly through the solid rock as though the stone itself were nothing more than mist. The rest of her followed without resistance, disappearing through the concealed veil.

Moments later, she emerged beside Nadia on the other side, followed closely by the soldier. All three paused, silently taking in the sight before them.

Nestled high within a remote mountain range, hidden from the eyes of the world, stood an imposing fortress built in the timeless architecture and aesthetic of ancient East Asian monastic traditions. Towering stone walls blended seamlessly into the surrounding cliffs while elegant pagoda rooftops overlooked sprawling courtyards lined with weathered statues, tranquil gardens, and crimson maple trees swaying gently beneath the mountain wind. The entire monastery radiated an unmistakable spiritual presence, one that seemed to permeate the very air itself.

"Thanks to the mystical veil you've just passed through," Nadia explained as they resumed walking, "the monastery is nearly impossible to locate through ordinary means. Unless those within wish to be found, even the League's best scouts would wander these mountains for years without ever discovering it."

Their footsteps carried them toward a long flight of stone stairs leading to the monastery's entrance.

They had barely reached the first few steps.

Without warning, several figures descended from above.

Not a single sound accompanied their arrival.

Robed men and women landed with composed demeanor and precision across the staircase, forming an unbroken line between the sisters and the monastery beyond. Each carried themselves with perfect composure, their loose garments stirring gently in the mountain breeze as staffs, spears, curved blades, and prayer beads rested comfortably in experienced hands. Their expressions remained calm, though their eyes missed nothing.

Standing before them at the lower part of the stairs, stood an elderly man with silver threaded through his dark hair, regarded the visitors in silence for a long moment before speaking.

His continuance and way he carried himself made it visible he was the lead guardian of this group atop the flight of stairs.

"You stand upon sacred ground," he said, his voice carrying neither anger nor hostility, only tranquil authority. "Turn back. Outsiders are forbidden entry without the leave of the Master."

No weapon was raised.

None needed to be.

The silent confidence with which the guardians stood made it abundantly clear that forcing passage would be a mistake.

Nadia inclined her head respectfully.

"We have not come seeking conflict."

"No one who comes bearing League steel arrives expecting peace," another guardian answered evenly, his gaze lingering on the unconscious Jason slung across the soldier's shoulder before returning to the sisters. "State your purpose."

Talia stepped forward before Nadia could answer.

"We seek an audience with your Master."

"The master grants audiences by his choosing."

"I see you remain just as adamant as ever," Nadia remarked evenly. "Though we have not come on League business. I would, however, advise you to show a measure of respect. Standing before you is my sister, Talia... the Head of the Demon."

The guardians' observant gazes shifted toward Talia. She remained silent, meeting their eyes without flinching. Judging by the subtle change in their expressions, it was evident they had read between the lines. Ra's al Ghul was no longer alive, and the woman standing before them now bore both his title and his authority.

"We stand here seeking an audience with your Master," Talia said, her voice calm yet carrying placid authority. "It would be nothing short of disrespect to deny us entry after we have traveled this far."

She deliberately made no mention of her request to meet their Master. Instead, she simply sought entry. A refusal at the gate would be viewed not merely as a rejection of a visitor, but as a slight against the title of the Head of the Demon itself.

Understanding the implication, the lead guardian stepped forward and inclined his head respectfully.

"Forgive my impertinence," he said, lowering his chin in a courteous bow, a stark contrast to the proud posture he had maintained moments earlier.

With the matter settled, Talia and the others fell in behind the guardian assigned to escort them into the All-Caste's sanctuary, while the lead guardian remained behind to send word to the Master of the arrival of Ra's al Ghul's successor.

For the first time, several pairs of eyes drifted toward the unconscious young man as the group passed the other guardians. Though bound in chains and secured beneath layers of restraints, it wasn't his condition that drew their attention. There was something else about him—something subtle, yet profoundly unsettling. Those whose senses extended beyond the physical instinctively felt it, an inexplicable presence that stirred quiet unease deep within them.

One of the older guardians frowned almost imperceptibly.

"...His Ki."

Another slowly closed his eyes, extending his awareness for only a brief instant before opening them again.

"It isn't...right."

A faint murmur rippled through the gathered guardians, spreading quietly from one to another without a single word being spoken loud enough for the visitors to make out.

'They already sense his abnormality?' Talia thought, unable to completely hide her surprise. The realization forced her to reassess the people before her. The members of this secretive spiritual order possessed senses and perception that far exceeded even her own expectations, making it increasingly clear why the All-Caste had endured as little more than whispered legend for so many generations.

The group continued their ascent until they reached the top of the staircase. There, the steps opened onto a modest stone courtyard paved with perfectly interlocked slabs, forming an open space that looked as though it had been purpose-built for martial training or duels between seasoned masters. Beyond it stood another, much shorter flight of stairs leading into what appeared to be a grand hall carved seamlessly into the mountain itself.

Standing across those final steps were several more guardians dressed in the same ceremonial attire as those who had first intercepted the visitors below. They remained motionless, their silent presence making it unmistakably clear that no one would proceed another step without permission.

Before anyone had the chance to speak, another voice drifted calmly down from above.

"So..."

It was unmistakably feminine.

"...what does the Spawn of the Demon want with this place?"

The question wasn't directed at the man escorting them.

Instead, the speaker's gaze settled squarely on Nadia, lingering there for only a brief moment before gliding effortlessly across everyone else in the group.

Almost immediately, every guardian stepped aside in perfect unison, opening a narrow path down the staircase.

A lone figure began descending the steps with measured and unhurried steps which portrayed a confident demeanor, every stride calm and deliberate. There was an unmistakable air of authority about the individual, one that naturally drew every eye without the slightest need for introduction or announcement.

Essence.

Her crimson sash swayed gently behind her with each step as she approached. Her piercing eyes shifted from Nadia before settling firmly on Talia, and there wasn't even the slightest attempt to hide the cool indifference written across her face.

"I was beginning to think your family had forgotten we existed," she remarked evenly. "Or perhaps the All-Caste only comes to mind whenever you need something from us."

This time, every word was directed squarely at Talia.

'That was fast,' Talia thought. 'Everything we discussed at the bottom of the steps reached her before we even made it to the top.'

"It seems your height wasn't the only thing that's grown since my last visit," Nadia replied without missing a beat. "Your superiority complex appears to have matured quite nicely as well."

She spoke with the casual familiarity of an aunt teasing a niece who had come home from college convinced she knew everything.

Essence offered no acknowledgment whatsoever.

Nadia's jab might as well have never been spoken.

Instead, her gaze drifted silently past the sisters and settled on the chained up unconscious young man hanging over the assassin's shoulder.

The trace of sarcasm that had lingered in her expression disappeared.

Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly.

"And who's the unfortunate soul you've got slung over your shoulders?" Essence asked, her attention settling on the bound and gagged young man who looked less like a guest and more like someone being transported to a high-security asylum.

Without waiting for further instruction, the League assassin escorting the Spawns of the Demon stepped forward. Moving with deliberate care, he shifted Jason Todd from his shoulder before lowering him gently onto the stone pavement, remaining alert even with the young man unconscious.

Essence continued down the remaining steps until she stood only a few feet away from him. The mild irritation she'd directed toward the sisters moments earlier vanished the instant she got a proper look at Jason. In its place was something far more serious—a quiet sense of bewilderment.

'This…'

Her gaze lingered on his face for several long seconds before she slowly closed her eyes.

She extended a hand toward him.

Not to touch him.

Only to sense him.

The instant her spiritual awareness reached him—

Her eyes flew open.

"...strange." For the first time since the visitors had arrived, genuine alarm broke through Essence's otherwise composed demeanor.

"I see..." she said quietly, though her voice carried unmistakable certainty. "So that's the true reason for your visit."

Her eyes never left Jason as she continued studying him with intense concentration, as though trying to reconcile what she had just perceived with everything she thought she knew.

'Her spiritual perception is even sharper than the others',' Talia concluded, silently reevaluating the young woman before her. 'Which means he must have sensed it as well…'

Her gaze shifted toward the elderly guardian who had personally escorted them up the mountain.

Throughout the exchange, the old man hadn't shown the slightest interest in the conversation. He simply stood there with his hands folded behind his back, calmly facing the great hall ahead as though everything unfolding beside him was of little consequence.

Then, without looking at anyone in particular, he finally spoke.

"Your request for an audience with our Master has been granted."

His words immediately brought everyone's thoughts to a halt.

Essence, who had looked ready to say something further, quietly swallowed whatever was on the tip of her tongue. Turning smoothly on her heel, she faced the entrance to the hall before glancing back at the visitors.

"Best not to keep the Master waiting," she said. "Follow me."
