The cold concrete wall pressed against my cheek as I strained to hear better. "Kenneth?" My whisper sounded unnaturally loud in the silent cell. The only response was a faint shuffling sound from the other side. I pressed my palm flat against the rough surface, feeling the chill seep into my skin. Why would Bevis lock him up next to me? The thought made my stomach twist. Wasn't he afraid I'd help Kenneth escape? Or was this another one of his cruel tests?
I glanced around my small prison. Leaving this cell wouldn't be difficult - the simple lock wouldn't stop someone like me. But once outside, I'd have nowhere to go. The compound was surrounded by the endless sea on all sides, its waves crashing violently against the cliffs below. Even if I made it outside, I didn't know the hidden paths through the rocky shoreline. And if I tried to return to Lionel... My throat tightened at the thought. After disappearing without a word, I wouldn't even know how to face him.
