The city bustled with life. Cars sped down open roads, people laughed over iced drinks at open cafes, and shop windows twinkled with new season displays.
Mira and Raven tried their best, pulling her from boutique to boutique, forcing her into colorful clothes, and complimenting her when she halfheartedly tried anything on.
Elisa moved like a ghost through it all. Her eyes unfocused. Her smiles were weak.
But then, just as they exited a skincare and spa salon, a voice called out. "Elisa?"
Her head jerked toward the voice before her brain caught up.
Nate.
He looked surprised and very happy to see her…then concern overshadowed his joy as he rushed to her and pulled her into a bear hug.
"Oh my God, Elisa. I've been so worried. I've been trying to reach you; I even went to the café but…" He trailed off as he leaned back, taking in her hollow cheeks and tired eyes. "Are you okay?"
