Chapter 389 - Predators in the Dark

High in the branches, the lizard remained perfectly still.

Invisible.

Silent.

His golden eyes glowed faintly in the darkness as he continued watching the three figures below.

But the conversation he had just overheard stirred something in his mind.

*Blood… less than an hour old.*

*Not human. Not beast.*

The lizard's pupils narrowed slightly.

*That wasn't me.*

He had already consumed the beasts he killed earlier. There had been no blood left behind, no lingering scent strong enough for something like the lynx to track so clearly.

Which meant—

*Something else hunted here.*

Slowly and carefully, the lizard shifted his gaze across the surrounding forest.

His eyes were not ordinary eyes.

They traced **energy**.

Flow.

Disturbances.

Living things could hide their bodies.

They could mask their scent.

They could even conceal their spiritual aura.

But **energy itself** was far more difficult to completely erase.

The lizard scanned the forest carefully.

Tree trunks.

Roots.

Stone.

Faint veins of spiritual energy drifting naturally through the air.

Nothing unusual.

For a moment.

Then—

His gaze paused.

A faint ripple.

So faint it almost blended perfectly with the natural spiritual flow of the forest.

But it was there.

His golden pupils sharpened instantly.

*There.*

Yet when he stared directly at the spot—

There was **nothing**.

No body.

No shadow.

No movement.

Only empty air between two thick tree trunks.

The lizard tilted his head slightly.

This movement carried none of the uncertainty most creatures would show.

It was something else entirely.

The same certainty someone feels when answering the simplest of questions.

If someone asked whether they could pick up a pencil—

No one would hesitate.

The answer would come instantly.

*Yes.*

The lizard felt that same certainty now.

He had never even considered the possibility that the lynx had truly seen him earlier.

That thought had never crossed his mind.

Because he **knew** his concealment worked.

He had tested it countless times.

Even the fox had been unable to detect him unless he chose to reveal himself.

So the lynx had not been looking at him.

Of that, he was certain.

Which meant—

The lynx had been staring at **something else**.

The lizard slowly turned his head again, scanning the surrounding space.

His golden eyes brightened slightly.

And then he saw it.

Faint.

Barely visible.

A thin distortion in the flow of spiritual energy.

Like heat rising from stone beneath the sun.

Something was there.

But whatever it was—

It was **invisible**.

The lizard stared at the spot silently.

Then slowly—

His tail flicked once.

A faint crackle of lightning crawled along the black scales at its tip.

Below, the lynx suddenly stopped moving.

Its ears snapped upright.

"…I felt something move."

The mid-stage cultivator frowned.

"Where?"

The lynx's green eyes narrowed as it stared toward the trees.

But it wasn't looking at the lizard.

It was looking **past him**.

Toward the exact same empty space the lizard had been observing.

High above them—

The invisible predator and the unseen hunter now stared at the same spot in the forest.

Neither revealing themselves.

Yet both aware.

Something else was here.

High in the branches, the lizard did not move.

Not a single scale shifted.

His golden eyes remained fixed on the faint distortion in the flow of spiritual energy between the trees.

Something was there.

Invisible.

Watching.

Just like him.

Below, the lynx's body had gone completely still. Its fur bristled slightly as its glowing green eyes remained fixed toward the same empty space.

The two human cultivators noticed immediately.

The weaker one spoke first, his voice tight with unease.

"…What is it?"

The lynx did not answer right away.

Its ears twitched once.

Then it spoke quietly.

"…We cannot continue like this."

The mid-stage cultivator muttered softly, his gaze sweeping through the forest even though his eyes saw nothing but shadows and moonlit trunks.

"If something is watching us, walking deeper into the forest would be foolish."

The weaker cultivator nodded quickly, his grip tightening around the sword at his waist.

"I agree."

"This place already feels wrong."

The lynx's tail lashed once.

Its glowing green eyes remained fixed toward the trees where the disturbance lingered.

"…Something is here," it said quietly.

"I cannot see it clearly."

"But the forest's spiritual flow is disturbed."

The mid-stage cultivator frowned.

"Can you track it?"

The lynx shook its head slowly.

"No."

A brief silence fell over the group.

Then the lynx continued.

"…We withdraw."

The weaker cultivator released a breath of relief.

"Good. I was thinking the same thing."

But the mid-stage cultivator looked slightly dissatisfied.

"So we just leave?"

The lynx glanced at him sharply.

"We leave **for now**."

Its voice remained calm but firm.

"This area may contain something we cannot currently detect."

"Proceeding blindly would be reckless."

It lifted its head slightly, eyes glinting beneath the moonlight.

"This forest belongs to predators."

Its glowing green gaze swept the trees one final time.

"And right now…"

"…we are not the strongest hunters here."

The mid-stage cultivator hesitated briefly, clearly displeased.

But he was not foolish.

After a moment, he nodded.

"…Fine."

He glanced toward the weaker cultivator.

"We withdraw for now."

The weaker one nodded quickly.

"Right."

The lynx then turned its head toward the deeper forest.

"I will contact the master."

The mid-stage cultivator looked slightly surprised.

"You mean **him**?"

The lynx's eyes glowed faintly.

"Yes."

"If something powerful is moving through this region…"

"…he will want to know."

That single word carried weight.

The cultivators' expressions shifted instantly.

The weaker one swallowed.

"…Alright."

The mid-stage cultivator nodded slowly.

"Then we retreat for now."

Without another word, the two humans turned and began moving back toward the outer forest, their steps quick but controlled.

The lynx remained still for a moment longer.

Its glowing green eyes swept across the forest one last time.

Then it spoke quietly.

"I'll return."

Its body turned toward the darker, denser region of the **Black Spine Mountains**.

Without hesitation, it began walking in the opposite direction from the humans.

Three figures.

Three different paths.

Within seconds, the cultivators were already disappearing into the distant trees.

The lynx moved deeper into the mountain forest.

And above them—

The invisible lizard watched.

He didn't move.

Didn't react.

Didn't follow.

His golden eyes simply observed as the distance between the three figures grew larger and larger.

Seconds passed.

Then the lizard's pupils narrowed slightly.

*An act.*

The thought surfaced calmly within his mind.

From the moment the lynx had stopped moving—

From the moment it said *something moved*—

The lizard had already noticed it.

The tiny inconsistencies.

The unnatural pauses.

The exaggerated caution.

At first glance, it looked like genuine suspicion.

But that was exactly the problem.

It was **too obvious**.

They were acting.

Trying to lure out whatever was watching them.

The lizard remained perfectly still.

Even now.

Even as the lynx disappeared deeper into the forest.

Even as the cultivators moved toward the outskirts.

His tail did not move.

His breathing did not change.

He simply continued watching.

Waiting.

Because if it had truly been an act—

Then the real trap had not yet been sprung.

And somewhere nearby—

The one who was **truly hiding** might still be watching as well.
